This study aimed to describe the prevalence of financial maltreatment, and to identify culture related risk factors of financial maltreatment, among a group of Chinese American elders living in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Researchers sought solutions to financial neglect and exploitation of Chinese American elders who have enormous adaptive challenges and lack a harmonious and supportive family environment, as well as frameworks for understanding the cultural environment that can be used by social workers, law enforcement, and service providers.

The aim of this study is to provide helping professionals including Adult Protective Services (APS) workers, aging service providers and law enforcement workers a framework to understand financial maltreatment and its correlates among Chinese American older adults.

Mixed methods consisting of focus group interviews and survey were used. Three focus groups of Chinese American elders and one group of service professionals shared their insights into financial exploitation and neglect of this population, and contributed to the refinement of assessment tools used in the followed survey. Three hundred twenty-five elders (Mage =75.6, SD = 7.00) participated in the survey.

Purposive sampling was used and participants were recruited from various sources, including the Chinese senior center, social clubs, church groups, and interest groups, to maximize their variance in socioeconomic status and religious backgrounds. The Phoenix Chinese senior center and three Chinese senior housing facilities in Phoenix offered their assistance with participant recruitment for focus group interviews and the followed survey.
