Restricted Data at NACJD

Overview

NACJD takes extensive precautions to avoid conditions that might lead to violation of confidentiality of respondent and subject data. Prior to public release, we routinely check our data collections for conditions that might lead to violation of confidentiality of respondent and subject data. The issue of confidentiality applies to a variety of data, including personal interviews, observation records, notes, recordings, organizational and institutional data, location or geographic coordinate data, and public records. Respondent confidentiality is ensured by removing, masking, blanking, or collapsing direct or indirect identifying variables within public-use versions of the datasets.

Nonetheless, some of our datasets are not available for direct download from the NAJCD or ICPSR websites because some risk of research participants' identity disclosure remains (e.g., variables used in conjunction with one another or linking to other data files). When these disclosure risks remain, the data is made available only through the restricted-access mechanisms outlined on this page.

In most instances, documentation associated with datasets remains available to download from the study page. Documentation includes the study metadata, in addition to any codebooks, questionnaires, user guides, or other supporting documentation prepared for use with the study. Before applying to access restricted data, we strongly encourage users to review these documentation files.

Restricted-access studies (or parts of studies) are indicated on the study home page under the Access Notes, as well by the presence of an "Access Restricted Data" button underneath the study title:

Users interested in accessing these studies must complete an application process, including IRB review and a signed Restricted Data Use Agreement. Please note that the application process may vary depending on the mechanism of restricted data access.
