Does my IRB need to grant me approval for my research protocol, or is an exempt determination acceptable?

In almost all cases, an exempt determination is acceptable. Applicants who wish to use data from the Prison Rape Elimination Act series in the ICPSR Physical Data Enclave must receive IRB approval rather than exemption.
