The East Asian Social Survey (EASS) is a biennial social survey project that serves as a cross-national network of the following four General Social Survey type surveys in East Asia: the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), the Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS), the Korean General Social Survey (KGSS), and the Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS), and comparatively examines diverse aspects of social life in these regions. Since its 1st module survey in 2006, EASS produces and disseminates its module survey datasets and this is the harmonized data for the 7th module survey, called 'Culture and Globalization in East Asia'.

Survey information in this module is the same topic as the second module of the EASS 2008, and it focuses on cultural norms and expectations of respondents. Respondents were asked about their exposure to East Asian cultural activities and rituals as well as opinion on family responsibilities and roles. Other topics include sources of international news and discussion frequency, countries or regions traveled, as well as where acquaintances live. Additionally, respondents were asked how accepting they would be of people from other countries as coworkers, neighbors, and in marriage. Information was collected regarding foreign practices, whether the respondent was working for a foreign capital company, and the economic environment. Respondents were also asked to assess their own proficiency when reading, speaking, and writing in English. Demographic information specific to the respondent and their spouse includes age, sex, marital status, education, employment status and hours worked, occupation, earnings and income, religion, class, size of community, and region.

The purpose of this study was to provide students and scholars in the social science community with integrated East Asian Social Survey datasets collected by coordinated efforts of the participating institutions in China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Korean and Chinese teams conducted the survey in 2018 while the Taiwanese team conducted it between 2018 and 2019. Japanese team conducted the JGSS-2017 Globalization (JGSS-2017G) in 2017 which included the 2018 EASS module. As the sample size for JGSS-2017G was too small (860 valid cases) due to limited finances, JGSS conducted another survey with almost the same questionnaire between November and December 2018, JGSS-2018G By combining JGSS-2017G and JGSS-2018G, the number of valid responses become 1,538.

Each participating country conducted its own multi-stage area probability sample. Specifically:

  • China: Four-stage probability sampling
  • Japan: Two-stage stratified random sampling; stratified by regional block and population size.
  • Korea: Four-stage area probability sampling
  • Taiwan: Three-stage stratified PPS sampling: (1) Primary Sampling Unit (PSU) =township, (2) village (administrative unit under township), (3) individual person.

Cross-sectional

Adult populace drawn from the national sample in the four countries. Specifically:

  • China: 18 and up Chinese citizens living in the China mainland
  • Japan: Japanese men and women 20-89 years of age living in Japan
  • Korea: Adult citizens aged 18 and over who live in household in Korea
  • Taiwan: Population registers

Individual

Topics included in this study are: East Asian rituals, exposure to East Asian cultural contents, international news source, views on gender role division, patriarchy and hierarchy, in-group orientation, risk taking, attitude towards foreigners including foreign workers and brides, views on globalization and nationalism, positive and negative aspects of globalization including influence on economy, labor force and environment, English language skills, experiences in studying and/or training abroad and working at foreign company, as well as on social networks such as number of people having conversation and greeting in a day.

Response rates for each of the four countries' social surveys (China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) are the following:

  • China: 75.0 percent
  • Japan: 2017: 64.0 percent (JGSS official formula); 57.3 percent (No. of R/Initial sample size) 2018: 62.7 percent (JGSS official formula); 56.5 percent (No. of R/Initial sample size)
  • Korea: 43.0 percent
  • Taiwan: 47.9 percent
