The Chicago Surveys are part of a long-running series of public opinion surveys conducted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs every two years. This study is the 2012 Chicago Council Survey, designed to investigate the opinions and attitudes of the general public on matters related to foreign policy, and to define the parameters of public opinion within which decision-makers must operate.

The 2012 Chicago Council Survey focuses on respondents' opinions of the United States' leadership role in the world and the challenges the country faces domestically and internationally.

The survey covers the following international topics: relations with other countries, role in foreign affairs, possible threats to vital interests in the next ten years, foreign policy goals, benefits or drawbacks of globalization, situations that might justify the use of United States troops in other parts of the world, the number and location of United States military bases overseas, respondent feelings toward people of other countries, opinions on the influence of other countries in the world and how much influence those countries should have, United States participation in potential treaties, the United States' role in the United Nations and NATO, which side the United States should take in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, what measures should be taken to deal with Iran's nuclear program, the military effort in Afghanistan, opinions on efforts to combat terrorism, and the rise of China as a global power.

Domestic issues include economic prospects for American children when they become adults, funding for government programs, the fairness of the current distribution of income in the United States, climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and United States dependence on foreign energy sources.

Demographic and other background information include age, gender, race/ethnicity, marital status, left-right political self-placement, political affiliation, employment status, highest level of education, and religious preference. Also included are household size and composition, whether the respondent is head of household, household income, housing type, ownership status of living quarters, household Internet access, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) status, and region and state of residence.

The Afrobarometer project was designed to collect and disseminate information regarding Africans' views on democracy, governance, economic reform, civil society, and quality of life. This particular survey was concerned with the attitudes and opinions of the citizens of Benin. Respondents in a face-to-face interview were asked to rate their president and the president's administration in overall performance, to state the most important issues facing their nation, and to evaluate the effectiveness of certain continental and international institutions. Opinions were gathered on the role of the government in improving the economy, whether corruption existed in local and national government, whether government officials were responsive to problems of the general population, and whether local government officials, the police, the courts, the overall criminal justice system, the National Electoral Commission, and the government broadcasting service could be trusted. Respondents were polled on their knowledge of the government, including the identification of government officials, their level of personal involvement in political, governmental, and community affairs, their participation in national elections, and the inclusiveness of the government. Economic questions addressed the past, present, and future of the country's and the respondents' economic conditions, and respondents' living conditions. Round 5 surveys included special modules on taxation; gender issues; crime, conflict and insecurity; globalization; and social service delivery. Background variables include age, gender, ethnicity, education, religious affiliation and participation, political party affiliation, language spoken most at home, whether the respondent was the head of household, current and past employment status, whether a close friend or relative had died from AIDS, and language used in interview. In addition, the interviewer's gender, race, and education level is provided.

This particular data collection was concerned with the attitudes and opinions of the citizens of Zambia, and also includes a number of "country-specific questions" designed specifically for respondents of the Zambia survey. These "country specific questions" solicited respondents' opinions on topics such as attitudes toward Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA); expectations of Members of Parliament in their constituency/term; Parliament or Constituency decisions regarding Constituency Development Funds (CDFs); primary source of news regarding deliberations in the National Assembly; domestic and institutional violence; challenges in land acquisition; rights in the sale of land; and attitudes regarding street commerce.

The surveys also collect a large set of socio-demographic indicators such as age, gender, education level, poverty level, language and ethnicity, and religious affiliation, as well as political party affiliation. Afrobarometer Round 6 surveys were implemented in 36 countries.

The Afrobarometer is a comparative series of public attitude surveys that collects and disseminates data regarding Africans' views on democracy, governance, the economy, civil society, and related issues. This particular data collection was concerned with the attitudes and opinions of the citizens of Zimbabwe, and also includes a number of country-specific questions designed specifically for the Zimbabwe survey.

The purpose of the survey was to study, in 18 countries of Asia and Europe, how democracy (or quasi-democracy) functions in response to various domestic and international stimuli, with a focus on the rise of civil society and the deepening of globalization. The 18 countries surveyed include from East and Southeast Asia: Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, and from Western Europe: the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. The questionnaire covers generally five topics: (1) identity, (2) trust, (3) satisfaction, (4) beliefs and actions, and (5) socio-economic attributes. For the first topic, the survey asked respondents for their nationality and its importance to them, whether it was respected by others and given fair treatment in international economic and political affairs, and how proud of it they were. Respondents were also asked how important it was for them to have citizenship, fluency in their country's dominant language, and to practice their nationality's dominant religion. Respondents were asked if they identified with a community or a group rather than a nationality (i.e. neighborhoods, ethnic group, and religion), if they belonged to larger groups in which people from other countries were included (i.e. European, Asian, and Islamic), and how proud they were of their country's achievements or politics. The next topic asked respondents to assess their level of confidence in their country's government and endeavors (i.e. political parties, law and courts, and mass media) and in international organizations (i.e. World Bank and NATO), to name their country's foreign ministers, and if they could name the five countries with permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council. For the third topic, respondents were asked how well their countries handled issues of politics and citizens, about their personal life situation, their country's development, and the international situation. Regarding beliefs and actions, respondents were asked to comment on the effects of development around the world (i.e., products, money, people, and information being able to move globally), the importance of social issues (i.e., human rights and unemployment), and whether such issues should be dealt with by the country alone or by all countries working together, and if they agreed with specific statements others have made about the government, economy, and politics. They were questioned about their interest in politics, their left-to-right stance in politics, what political activities they had participated in, whether they had voted in the presidential and/or local elections, which political party they felt closest to, and their level of satisfaction with politics in their society. The final topic included questions on the respondent's awareness of political or governmental affairs through different types of media (i.e., newspaper, radio, and television), life satisfaction, fluency in English, frequency with which they attended religious services, religious domination, sex, age, living situation, highest completed level of education, employment, household's living standards, income, and ethnic group.

This poll, fielded February 23-27, 2007, is a part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked whether they approved of the way George W. Bush was handling his job as president and other issues such as foreign policy. They also were asked to rate the condition of the national economy, what was the most important domestic policy for the president and Congress to focus on, and whether they approved of the way Congress was handling its job. Opinions were solicited on the topic of health care, including how well the United States health care system works, the cost of health care, the federal government's responsibility to guarantee health care for all Americans, whether taxes should be increased in order to expand health care to all Americans, and whether employers should be required to provide insurance for all their workers. A series of questions asked for respondents' opinions on advertisements by drug companies, including whether they are helpful to consumers, whether prescription drug advertisements on television should be limited by the government, whether it was acceptable for doctors to be paid by drug companies to promote prescription drugs, and whether Congress should change the law to allow Americans to buy lower cost prescription drugs from Canada. Respondents were asked whether the government would do a better job than private insurance companies in providing medical coverage and holding down health care costs, which issues they would like most to hear the 2008 presidential candidates talk about over the next two years regarding health care, and whether they had confidence in each presidential candidate's ability to make decisions about health care. Information was also collected about the status of respondents and their household members' health care coverage and health care costs, their health status and treatment for common conditions, life expectancy, whether they had an employer-sponsored pension plan, and whether they were concerned about not having enough money for retirement. Additional information was collected on respondents' opinions of the Republican and Democratic parties, international trade, globalization, and the United States military situation with Iraq and Iran. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, education level, household income, marital status, religious preference, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, political philosophy, voter registration status and participation history, the presence of children under 18 and household members between the ages of 18 and 24, and whether respondents had children attending a four-year college.

The Chicago Surveys are part of a long-running series of public opinion surveys conducted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs every two years. The surveys are designed to investigate the opinions and attitudes of the general public on matters related to foreign policy, and to define the parameters of public opinion within which decision-makers must operate. This public opinion study of the United States focused on respondents' opinions of the United States' leadership role in the world and the challenges the country faces domestically and internationally. Data were collected on a wide range of international topics, including: United States relations with other countries, role in foreign affairs, possible threats to vital interests in the next ten years, foreign policy goals, benefits or drawbacks of globalization, situations that might justify the use of United States troops in other parts of the world, the number and location of United States military bases overseas, respondent feelings toward people of other countries, opinions on the influence of other countries in the world and how much influence those countries should have, international trade, United States participation in potential treaties, the United States' role in the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which side the United States should take in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and what measures should be taken to deal with Iran's nuclear program. Respondents were also asked their opinion on domestic issues including funding for various government programs, climate change, measures to address the United States' dependence on foreign energy sources, and their views of various groups' influence on United States policy. Cotton Spinning Machinery Orders, British Textile Machinery Firms, 1878-1933 (ICPSR 27141)

This was a long-term study of the diffusion of cotton-spinning technologies from Britain to emerging textile industries around the world. Cotton manufacturing was the first global industry, and the dataset provides information on orders covering roughly 90 percent of world trade in these machines. Virtually every major national cotton industry is covered, the major exception being the United States of America (whose textiles industry was supplied primarily by the protected textile machinery industry). The orders include detailed information about machine specifications, such as frame size, machine speed, the yarn count for which the machine is designed, and the types of raw cotton to be utilized. A specific issue that motivated the research project was the choice between mule spinning and ring spinning, on which national patterns diverged widely. The East Asian Social Survey (EASS) is a biennial social survey project that serves as a cross-national network of the following four General Social Survey type surveys in East Asia: the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), the Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS), the Korean General Social Survey (KGSS), and the Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS), and comparatively examines diverse aspects of social life in these regions. Since its 1st module survey in 2006, EASS produces and disseminates its module survey datasets and this is the harmonized data for the 7th module survey, called 'Culture and Globalization in East Asia'.

Survey information in this module is the same topic as the second module of the EASS 2008, and it focuses on cultural norms and expectations of respondents. Respondents were asked about their exposure to East Asian cultural activities and rituals as well as opinion on family responsibilities and roles. Other topics include sources of international news and discussion frequency, countries or regions traveled, as well as where acquaintances live. Additionally, respondents were asked how accepting they would be of people from other countries as coworkers, neighbors, and in marriage. Information was collected regarding foreign practices, whether the respondent was working for a foreign capital company, and the economic environment. Respondents were also asked to assess their own proficiency when reading, speaking, and writing in English. Demographic information specific to the respondent and their spouse includes age, sex, marital status, education, employment status and hours worked, occupation, earnings and income, religion, class, size of community, and region.

The main aim of this research is to study the criminal mobility of ethnic-based organized crime groups. The project examines whether organized crime groups are able to move abroad easily and to reproduce their territorial control in a foreign country, or whether these groups, and/or individual members, start a life of crime only after their arrival in the new territories, potentially as a result of social exclusion, economic strain, culture conflict and labeling. More specifically, the aim is to examine the criminal mobility of ethnic Albanian organized crime groups involved in a range of criminal markets and operating in and around New York City, area and to study the relevance of the importation/alien conspiracy model versus the deprivation model of organized crime in relation to Albanian organized crime. There are several analytical dimensions in this study: (1) reasons for going abroad; (2) the nature of the presence abroad; (3) level of support from ethnic constituencies in the new territories; (4) importance of cultural codes; (5) organizational structure; (6) selection of criminal activities; (7) economic incentives and political infiltration. This study utilizes a mixed-methods approach with a sequential exploratory design, in which qualitative data and documents are collected and analyzed first, followed by quantitative data. Demographic variables in this collection include age, gender, birth place, immigration status, nationality, ethnicity, education, religion, and employment status.

Two main data sources were employed: (1) court documents, including indictments and court transcripts related to select organized crime cases (84 court documents on 29 groups, 254 offenders); (2) in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 9 ethnic Albanian offenders currently serving prison sentences in U.S. Federal Prisons for organized crime related activities, and with 79 adult ethnic Albanian immigrants in New York, including common people, undocumented migrants, offenders, and people with good knowledge of Albanian organized crime modus operandi. Sampling for these data were conducted in five phases, the first of which involved researchers examining court documents and identifying members of 29 major ethnic Albanian organized crime groups operating in the New York area between 1975 and 2013 who were or had served sentences in the U.S. Federal Prisons for organized crime related activities. In phase two researchers conducted eight in-depth interviews with law enforcement experts working in New York or New Jersey. Phase three involved interviews with members of the Albanian diaspora and filed observations from an ethnographic study. Researchers utilized snowball and respondent driven (RDS) recruitment methods to create the sample for the diaspora dataset. The self-reported criteria for recruitment to participate in the diaspora interviews were: (1) age 18 or over; (2) of ethnic Albanian origin (foreign-born or 1st/2nd generation); and (3) living in NYC area for at least 1 year. They also visited neighborhoods identified as high concentrations of ethnic Albanian individuals and conducted an ethnographic study to locate the target population. In phase four, data for the cultural advisors able to help with the project data was collected. In the fifth and final phase, researchers gathered data for the second wave of the diaspora data, and conducted interviews with offenders with ethnic Albanian immigrants with knowledge of the organized crime situation in New York City area. Researchers also approached about twenty organized crime figures currently serving a prison sentence, and were able to conduct 9 in-depth interviews.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, and how much trust they had in certain institutions like the press, radio, television, police, army, religious institutions, political parties, and the United Nations. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions about the European Union (EU), its priorities, budget spending, foreign, security, and defense policies, and feelings and fears about the enlargement of the EU and the building of Europe and the EU. Respondents also expressed whether they felt safer and more stable economically and politically as a member of the EU, whether their voice and that of their country counted in the EU, and if the EU played a positive or negative role in the important issues facing their country (e.g., crime, taxation, unemployment, terrorism, inflation, and health care). Respondents were also asked which European bodies played an important role in the life of the EU and expressed how much trust they had in these bodies (e.g., European Parliament, the European Commission, the Council of Ministers of the EU, The European Ombudsman, The European Court of Auditors, and the Committee of the Regions of the EU). Respondents were given a definition of globalization (the general opening-up of all economies, which leads to the certainty of a world-wide market) and asked if they felt globalization was a good thing for the country, and whether it would cause power to be concentrated in large companies, increase global environmental problems, represent a threat to employment, increase the variety of products for sale, cut the prices of products and services through increased competition, make it more difficult to control the quality of food products sold, or lead to a duller and more uniform world. Respondents were further queried on their feelings regarding the European Parliament and its power, the likelihood of voting in the next election, reasons for deciding to vote, what would make them more likely to vote in the next election, what the election campaign should focus on, and contact they may have had with members of the Parliament (whether through newspapers or magazines, television, radio, Internet, or public meetings). Demographic variables include marital status, gender, age, current occupation, whether the respondent lived in a rural area or village, small- or middle-sized town, or a large town, household income, who contributed largely to the household income and the occupation of that individual, and how much toward the left or right the respondent placed their political views.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on their opinions regarding the future of Europe, consumer protection for transborder purchases, family planning, and overall opinions and experiences of making transborder purchases within the internal market of the European Union (EU). The first part of the interview concerned the future of Europe. To start the interview, respondents were asked questions regarding their knowledge and support of EU enlargement, as well as their interest in domestic and European affairs. Respondents gave their views on decision-making at the European level, the effects of European unification, the possible harmonization of social welfare systems within the EU, and the impact of the euro. Next, questions were asked regarding consumer protection in the internal market of the EU. Respondents gave their views on consumer security for transborder purchases, the return of products within a cooling-off period, consumer contract terms, and the purchasing of financial services. Questions were also asked regarding the receipt of unsolicited advertisements that may be fraudulent, deceptive or misleading, respondents' experiences with cross-border shopping, the purchase of travel packages within the EU, and the overall provision of safety information for consumers. The third portion of the interview collected information on respondents' views in regard to family planning. Questions were asked regarding ideal family size, the timing of giving birth to and raising children, decision-making in having another child, and the future of respondents' household situations. Respondents gave their views on the roles of men and women in raising children, the ideal ages for men and women to have children, and solutions for potential shortages in the workforce. The last topic of the survey addressed consumers' overall opinions and experiences within the internal market of the EU. A series of questions addressed the impact of the European Single Market, transborder purchases of goods and services, and the potential for travel or change of residency to another member state in order to work or to attend school. Respondents gave their views concerning citizens' rights in the Single Market, seeking assistance within the Single Market, as well as their preferences in taking out a mortgage or insurance policy in another member state of the EU. This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, what their country's goals should be in the next 10 to 15 years, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on globalization and on the European Union (EU), including how well-informed they were about the EU, what sources of information about the EU they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EU member (or would benefit from being a future member), and the extent of their personal interest in EU matters. Other questions queried respondents about their country's public administration, the transparency of both their own government institutions and those of the EU, and how important they thought transparency was in their functioning. Respondents were asked which countries, specifically Turkey, Croatia, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, they would favor joining the EU. National and European identity is a major focus of the survey. Questions focused on to what extent respondents felt they were a citizen of their region, of their country, of Europe, and of the world, whether they were content with their identity, and their feelings on the importance of being European. The second major focus of the survey was European elections. Respondents were queried about their interest in the elections, whether or not they would vote, the main criteria in making these decisions, and what themes the electoral campaign should focus on. In addition, respondents were asked to name the party they voted for in the European Parliament (EP) elections in June 2004, May 2007, November 2007, and the latest parliamentary elections in their respective countries. For the third major focus, European values and value priorities, respondents were asked to identify their personal values, whether they thought EU member states shared common values, and how close or distant these shared values were. In addition, respondents were asked to select the most important values they associated with the idea of happiness. For the final major focus of the survey, climate change, respondents were queried about their knowledge of and views on climate change, including whether they thought climate change was a serious problem, whether enough is being done to fight it, and the reasons why individuals may or may not take action in fighting climate change. Respondents were also asked to identify the personal actions they have taken regarding climate change and to evaluate the objectives proposed by the EU to limit the impact of climate change. For the first major area, European employment and social policy, the survey focused on respondents' familiarity with the European Social Fund (ESF), past and present employers, the most valuable assets in finding a job, job training, the likelihood of finding a job if laid off, and whether the European Union (EU) has a positive or negative impact on employment and social policies. For the second major area, discrimination, respondents were asked about discrimination based on ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, and disability. The survey queried respondents about the extent of discrimination in their countries, whether discrimination is more or less common compared with five years ago, their personal experiences of discrimination in the past 12 months, their level of comfort with politicians of minority backgrounds, diversity in the media and workplace, how the economic crisis may affect discrimination, and respondents' identification with minority groups. For the third major area, development aid, respondents were queried about the importance of helping people in developing countries, the Millennium Development Goals, motives for rich countries to provide aid to developing nations, the countries best positioned to help develop countries, the largest challenges facing developing nations, and the European Union's contribution to development. This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the Standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on the following major areas of focus: (1) poverty and social exclusion, (2) mobile phone use, (3) economic crisis, and (4) international trade. For the first major area of focus, poverty and social exclusion, the survey queried respondents about their own definition of poverty, the extent of poverty and homelessness in their area, and whether or not respondents believed poverty had increased in their area and elsewhere. Respondents were queried about what necessities people must be able to afford to meet a minimal acceptable living standard, who is most at risk for poverty, as well as the social, political, and personal causes of poverty and homelessness. Respondents were also asked about how poverty impacts peoples' chances of completing certain activities, such as getting a good education or finding a job. Respondents were then asked whether or not they trust the European Union (EU), their governments, charities, other citizens, and miscellaneous institutions to effectively respond to poverty. Respondents were also asked to whom they assign primary responsibility for reducing or preventing poverty, what policies their governments should focus on in the future in the effort to help people out of poverty, and whether or not respondents approved of their government's existing anti-poverty measures. Respondents were also queried about their perception of social tensions between groups, and about what they have done personally to help poor people. Additionally, respondents were queried about their own living conditions, satisfaction with life, ability to keep a job, efforts to fight poverty, finances, and their own risk of falling into poverty. For the second major area of focus, mobile phone use, the survey asked respondents about whether or not they owned a mobile phone, their mobile phone use in other EU countries, and the cost of cellular phone service in those countries. For the third major area of focus, economic crisis, the survey questioned respondents about the degree to which the crisis personally affected them, how the crisis affected the EU and its policy efforts, who should bear responsibility for the crisis, who should bear the burden of response to the crisis, and how the European Parliament and other bodies should respond to the crisis. Experiments in Financial Liberalization: The Mexican Banking Sector (ICPSR 20962)

Since the liberalization of its trade in the mid-1980s, Mexico has pursued an aggressive globalization strategy, which today makes it the country with the most free trade agreements in the world. This liberalization strategy has also included the banking sector, particularly since 1997, when all restrictions to the entry of foreign banks were removed. The history of the banking sector in Mexico includes episodes of nationalization in 1982, privatization in 1992, and near-complete failure in 1995. Since then, however, the Mexican government has undertaken a series of bold reforms that have contributed to the modernization of its financial system. This paper documents the evolution of Mexico's banking sector starting from its nationalization in 1982 and culminating with the increased entry of foreign banks in recent years that has driven the recovery of bank credit to the private sector.

This study examined the electronic commerce of establishments across ten nations. Topics included a respondent selection/filter section containing questions about which industry represents their site's primary business, whether their organization had one or more than one establishment, the number of employees at the establishment, and whether they used the Internet to buy, sell, or support products or services. A second topic was the globalization of the firm and the globalization of markets and sourcing. For this section, respondents were asked whether any of their establishments or their headquarters were located outside of their country. In addition, respondents identified the total number of employees in all branches of the organization, the percentage of total sales and total procurement spending from outside of their country, and how much they were affected by competitors in the local area, or inside or outside the country. A third topic was the use of E-commerce technologies. This section queried respondents about their use of computers and email, whether they had a publicly accessible Web site, and if they utilized an intra-net, extra-net, electronic data interchange (EDI), electronic funds transfer (EFT), and a call center. A fourth topic was uses of the Internet, drivers for Internet use, barriers/difficulties to doing business on the Internet, and impacts of doing business online. For this section, respondents were asked about the purpose of using the Internet, whether they were familiar with an Internet marketplace, their participation as a buyer, a seller, or both in an Internet- based trading community, and whether they provide or plan to provide content and services for mobile customer access. Additionally, respondents were asked to rate the significance certain factors and obstacles had on doing business online, and the degree to which they experienced certain impacts since they began doing business online. A fifth topic was online sales, online services, and online procurement. In this section, respondents were asked if their online sales were to businesses, consumers, or both, to provide the percentage of total customer sales and total business to business that were conducted online. In addition, the survey inquired as to whether their Web site supported certain services, whether consumers, businesses, or both utilized these services, and what percentage of their total services were conducted online. Additionally, respondents were asked as to what percentage of the money they spent on certain items, such as direct goods for production, goods for resale, and supplies and equipment for doing business, are ordered online. The final topic was enterprise application strategy and spending. In this section, respondents were asked to identify the extent their Internet applications are electronically integrated with their internal databases and information systems, and their databases and information systems are electronically integrated with those of their suppliers and business customers. Lastly, respondents were asked to list their total revenue for both the calendar and fiscal year 2001, total IS operating budget in 2001, and the number of IT professionals working at their establishment.

The major purpose of this study was to compile panel/ comparative multiple indicators of globalization across a large number of countries. The primary investigators attempted to measure empirically the concept of globalization. These data offer temporal and international coverage, a theory-driven classification of globalization indicators, and standardizations of these indicators. Using large samples of the world's countries for mid-decade years in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, these data amass three interrelated dimensions and their corresponding measures of globalization, i.e., economic, cultural, and political. Measures of political globalization included each nation's participation in international treaties, intergovernmental organizations, and international non-governmental organizations, as well as each nation's total number of embassies, sent and received. The economic measures examined each nation's inflow of foreign direct investment, the balance of international income credit and debit payments, the balance of international services income credit and debit payments, and the balance of international imports and exports. The cultural measures compiled each nation's migration stock, the import of foreign newspapers and periodicals, the import of foreign books, and the amount of international mail received and dispatched. Descriptive characteristics collected included each country's United Nations Country Code, year of independence and dissolution, total population, and gross domestic product (GDP). Part 1 of this collection consists of a large sample of the world's nation-states. Part 2 is a subset of Part 1 which contains only those countries in the sample that had populations of at least one million people in 1995.
