These data were collected as part of a larger effort to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of a new computerized decision support system (Elder Abuse Decision Support System, EADSS) in elder abuse investigation and intervention programs in Illinois. Information on individuals with substantiated allegations of abuse includes basic demographics, physical, mental, and financial condition, and available resources. Variables describing the allegation cover the nature and severity of the abuse. Where possible, the alleged abuser(s) is(are) also evaluated physically, mentally, and financially, in addition to having basic demographics noted.

Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of the Elder Abuse Decision Support System (EADSS) for improving individual assessment and end-user clinical utility as compared to the current Illinois Department on Aging (IDOA) Abuse Neglect and Exploitation (ANE) investigation and intervention protocols.

Study Design

A total of 7 provider agencies in Illinois were selected to implement the field test intervention (Elder Abuse Decision Support System, EADSS). Standard Illinois Department of Aging (IDOA) Abuse Neglect and Exploitation (ANE) procedures of the agencies waiting to be enrolled were assessed as a comparison. The study used a quasiexperimental design with a pre-post, non-equivalent control group including six non-randomly assigned agencies. One agency enrolled in the study every 3 months to enable pretest data collection, training and posttest data collection. Each enrollment into the study began with a 3 month pretest data collection of client and case worker measures. Each 3 month pretest and posttest period was treated as a unit for comparison purposes and for tracking change over time. The 7 provider agencies that field tested the EADSS were selected purposively. Therefore, this research-to-practice study was an efficacy trial to see whether the EADSS will work under the "best available" conditions rather than an effectiveness trial of a representative sample.

Description of Variables

The collection includes two SPSS datasets.

  • Data file IDoA Comparison Data.sav (n=1633) includes 18 variables on basic demographics of the victim, type of allegation, and substantiation.
  • Data file EADSS Dataset 4-20-15.sav (n=948) includes 737 variables on basic demographics of victim and alleged abuser(s), assessments of the nature and severity of the allegation, and assessments of the mental and physical state of victim and alleged abuser(s).
