Discover
DSDR helps researchers discover data for secondary analysis. DSDR focuses on data that are valid for population inference. To this end, the searchable DSDR catalog consists of studies containing:
- Public-use data available for download via the DSDR website.
- Restricted-use data available by approved application and controlled access from DSDR.
- Data available from sources other than DSDR but are discoverable through the DSDR catalog.
Data
To access public-use data files, you must log in to DSDR with a free ICPSR Researcher Passport account which can be linked to an existing Google, LinkedIn, or ORCID account. You must also agree to comply with the study’s Terms of Use and, in some cases, provide additional registration information. Researcher Passport login is not required to view or download documentation files. Online analysis, which enables users to perform statistical procedures without downloading a dataset, is available for some public-use data files. Study-level metadata is available for download in a variety of formats.
The searches on this page return content related to DSDR. Please use the ICPSR main search to search all ICPSR holdings.

Restricted Data
Restricted-use data files are rendered in situations where removing potentially identifying information would significantly impair the analytic potential of the data, or in cases where data contain highly sensitive personal information and cannot be shared as a public-use file. In these circumstances, DSDR provides access to a restricted-use version that retains the confidential data but requires controlled conditions for accessing them. Depending on the requirements of the restricted-use data, access is provided by secure download to an approved local computing system, the Virtual Data Enclave (VDE) where researchers access the data remotely, or the Physical Data Enclave (PDE) where researchers access the data in person at the University of Michigan. Researchers must complete an application process and agree to follow strict legal and electronic requirements for maintaining data confidentiality before access is granted.
