Summary

This data collection contains the results of a follow-up cross-sectional study to the 2016 assessment of the current campus climate with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The sample survey of the University of Michigan (U-M), Ann Arbor, faculty, staff, and students was meant to represent the full diversity of the community and to capture information and perceptions on demographics, climate, institutional commitment and inclusive and equitable treatment, departmental norms, intergroup interactions, and discrimination. With input from committees of students, faculty, and staff, the survey instrument was developed collaboratively by the U-M Office of the Provost, U-M's Survey Research Center, and administered by SoundRocket, an external social science survey research company. The instrument was delivered as a web survey, and several notifications and reminders were used to encourage completion, as well as an incentive. These notifications and reminders were delivered in phases.

Variables in the collection describe age, gender and gender identity, race/ethnicity, school/department/unit, religious affiliation, disability status, campus safety, rating of campus climate, intergroup interaction, discriminatory events, composite rating scores, and more.

Study Purpose

This study aims to provide a representative snapshot of the University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students in the fall 2021 and compare it with a similar snapshot taken in the fall 2016.

Study Design

The survey was administered as an online web survey and optimized so that it could be completed successfully on mobile devices and tablets, as well as on desktop or laptop computers. Mobile optimization was implemented dynamically during the survey when the system detected that a mobile-sized screen was in use. The survey was designed as a self-administered, highly interactive, web-based survey.

The overall data collection design protocol entailed two phases:

Phase I

A USPS-mailed pre-notification letter sent to each selected participant, inviting them to participate in a web-based survey. Any participant lacking an adequate USPS mailing address received an email pre-notification letter.

  • An email invitation to participate in the web-based survey.
  • A series of four email reminders to participate in the web-based survey.

Phase II

To adjust for nonresponse differences, a second phase sample was selected.

  • They received an interviewer telephone prompt to compete the survey.

Sample

The study design employed scientific sampling techniques applied to the population of all U-M Ann Arbor, faculty, staff and students to generate simple random samples. The eligible population for the faculty and staff survey was all faculty, and staff employed as of October 1, 2021. The U-M Human Resources Department provided the sample frame for these surveys (approximately 5,400 faculty and 39,835 staff). The eligible population for the student survey was all students enrolled as of September 27, 2021. The sampling frame of approximately 50,257 students was obtained from the University of Michigan Registrar. Using the sample frames, U-M Survey Research Center selected a representative random sample of faculty, staff and students. A responsive survey design was employed, which allowed for multiple phases of data collection. The final sample was as follows:

Phase I

Faculty

  • Stratified random sample (n=1,500) using the University's race/ethnicity variable, with oversamples of Black, Hispanic, and Native American faculty members. The final counts used for analysis included 884 faculty.

Staff

  • Stratified random sample (n=3,500) with the same race/ethnicity stratification as used for faculty sample and oversamples of Black, Hispanic, and Native American staff members. The final counts used for analysis included 1,808 staff.

Students

  • Stratified random sample (n=3,500) with the same race/ethnicity stratification as used for faculty sample and oversamples of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students. The final counts used for analysis included 1,288 students.

Phase II

  • Sample of remaining, active cases, including all those who had visited the web survey in Phase I but did not complete it.

Description of Variables

The Campuswide Climate Survey dataset includes variables about participants perception of the conditions on the overall U-M campus, conditions in participants 'primary department/work unit/school or college, participants' overall health and wellness and demographic variables.

Response Rates

Faculty: Weighted 63.8%.

Staff: Weighted 62.2%.

Students: Weighted 48.8%.

Presence of Common Scales

The data includes a semantic differential scale, a three-point Likert scale, and several five-point Likert scales.

Version History

2025-10-02 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

Weight

The study contains a statistical weighting variable, FINAL_WEIGHT. This final weight is a combination of post-stratification and non-response adjustment weights applied to the combined phase I and phase II selection weights.
