Anti-Racism Data Use Guide

Purpose: to advance racially equitable data reuse practices for researchers to ensure that analysis does not harm the population(s) being studied or contribute to further marginalization of racialized communities.

How to Use this Guide

This guide was established as an effort to address and acknowledge structural and institutional racism within research systems and data practices. The materials provided in this guide are meant to help change norms and practices of data use at ICPSR by supplementing and educating all members of the scientific community interested in incorporating anti-racist and equitable data practice into their research efforts.

We acknowledge this resource is not exhaustive but we will continue to provide routine updates in order to continue our effort in mitigating problematic and racist data-use practices. This resource is not a solution to the ongoing issues embedded in research practices but we hope the materials provided can be used as tools to acknowledge and dismantle racist or harmful data re-use and analysis practices.
