This data collection effort, initiated by Dr. Donald J. West and continued by Dr. David Farrington, was undertaken to test several hypotheses about delinquency. The investigators examined socioeconomic conditions, schooling, friendship, parent-child relationships, extracurricular activities, school records, and criminal records. They also performed psychological tests to determine the causes of crime and delinquency. Information in the survey includes reports from peers, family size, child-rearing behavior, job histories, leisure habits, truancy, popularity, physical attributes, tendencies toward violence, sexual activity, and self-reported delinquency.

These data were collected to examine the background characteristics, attitudes, and reported behaviors of arrested clients of prostitutes, with particular attention to the issue of violence against women. Client intervention programs in four cities provided opportunities for gathering information from men arrested for trying to hire street prostitutes. For the study, a detailed anonymous questionnaire was administered to men before the beginning of every client intervention workshop in San Francisco, California, and Portland, Oregon. The questionnaire was also administered at a small program in Santa Clara, California, which was modeled after the San Francisco program. During the course of the study, the Portland program ceased operations and a new program began in Las Vegas, which became a significant source of data. Men were asked about their sexual behavior, including the number and type of partners, frequency of sex, interest in pornography, age and circumstances of first sexual encounter with a prostitute, sexual acts performed with prostitutes, and condom use with prostitutes. Clients were also asked about their attitudes toward premarital sex, homosexual sex, extramarital sex, and sex between adults and children. Other questions probed men's views about prostitutes, the legality of prostitution, and violence against women. Background information gathered on clients included race, educational level, sexual orientation, marital status, work status, socioeconomic status, age, parents' marital status, history of sexual or physical abuse, military service, relationship history, and sexual preferences.

Ethno-Methodological Study of the Subculture of Prison Inmate Sexuality in the United States, 2004-2005 (ICPSR 4556)

This study of prison rapes used an ethnographic, culturally relativistic methodology and was conducted between April 2004 and September 2005. The study was conducted in 30 correctional institutions, 23 men's and 7 women's, in 10 states. All 23 men's institutions were the highest-security level men's prison available in each state. When women's institutions were multi-security level and housed minimum, medium, and high-security inmates, they were selected from the highest-security level housing units within the institution. A total of 564 (409 male and 155 female) inmates were interviewed. The inmates to be interviewed were selected from the general prison population using a probability sample design. Average interview length was just under an hour. The sole mode of data collection was an open-ended, semistructured inmate interview. To ensure comparability of answers, surveys were designed with each query resting on a particular concept or variable. The same interview instrument was used for both male and female inmates. Questions were asked about inmate prison history, mental health, rape, social process, domestic violence and relationships, staff, institutional factors, and perception of social roles, and demographic information. Also included are lexical responses and free list questions such as "Why do inmates have sex with other inmates?"

The Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) was a large-scale, interdisciplinary study of how families, schools, and neighborhoods affect child and adolescent development. One component of the PHDCN was the Longitudinal Cohort Study, which was a series of coordinated longitudinal studies that followed over 6,000 randomly selected children, adolescents, and young adults, and their primary caregivers over time to examine the changing circumstances of their lives, as well as the personal characteristics, that might lead them toward or away from a variety of antisocial behaviors. Numerous measures were administered to respondents to gauge various aspects of human development, including individual differences, as well as family, peer, and school influences. One such instrument was the Relationships protocol. This was a self-administered packet given to subjects in Cohorts 12, 15, and 18 to obtain information about dating, attitudes toward sex and having babies, and experience with sexual intercourse.

The School Health Center Healthy Adolescent Relationship Program (SHARP) was a school health center (SHC) provider-delivered multi-level intervention to reduce adolescent relationship abuse (ARA) among adolescents ages 14-19 seeking care in SHCs. This study tested the effectiveness of a brief relationship abuse education and counseling intervention in SHCs.

The SHARP intervention consisted of three levels of integrated intervention:

  1. A brief clinical intervention on healthy and unhealthy relationships for SHC (cisgender and transgender) male and female patients delivered by SHC providers during all clinic visits (evaluated via client pre- and post-surveys and chart review)
  2. Development of an ARA-informed SHC staff and clinic environment (evaluated via provider pre and post-training surveys and interviews)
  3. SHC-based youth-led outreach activities within the school to promote healthy relationships and improve student safety (evaluated by focus groups with youth leaders and measures of school climate)

For confidentiality reasons, qualitative data from focus groups are not currently available. Focus groups were conducted with each student outreach team following the conclusion of data collection. Discussions focused on awareness about ARA, the school-wide campaign, using the SHC as a resource, and what else can be done to prevent ARA in schools.

Sexual Assault During and After Separation or Divorce in Rural Ohio, 2003-2004 (ICPSR 4309)

This qualitative study explored incidents of sexual assault of women by former husbands or cohabitants and the link to male peer support for sexually aggressive men in rural Ohio. Sexual assault was defined as unwanted sexual contact, sexual coercion, attempted rape, or rape. A series of screening questions were asked to determine a respondent's eligibility for inclusion in the study. The main criteria were being aged 18 or older and having ever had any type of unwanted sexual experience when they wanted to end, were trying to end, or after they had ended a relationship with a husband or live-in male partner. If they met the selection criteria, the women were invited to a semi-structured face-to-face interview at a time and place of their choosing. Between February 2003 and July 2004, 43 women were interviewed. The interviews included several demographic questions such as income, level of education, marital status, length of the relationship, and how long the respondent had lived in the area. Other questions asked about the unwanted sexual experiences, social support networks, and male pornography use.

The Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS) explores the relationship qualities and the subjective meanings that motivate adolescent behavior. More specifically, this study seeks to examine the nature and meaning of adolescent relationship experiences (e.g. with family, peers, and dating partners) in an effort to discover how experiences associated with age, gender, race, and ethnicity influence the meaning of dating relationships. The study further investigates the relative impact of dating partners and peers on sexual behavior and contraceptive practices, as well as involvement in other problem behaviors that can contribute independently to sexual risk-taking. The longitudinal design of the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS) includes a schedule of follow-up interviews occurring one, three, five, ten, and about eighteen years after the initial interview. Additional waves have since been conducted.

Wave 1 of TARS includes detailed data collected from both parents and adolescent respondents about their relationship experiences, including self-reported data from parents, parent-reported data about adolescent respondents, and self-reported data from adolescent respondents. These data are available as a combined dataset organized by adolescent respondent.

Three waves of data have been collected (2001, 2002, and 2004) and a fourth wave is scheduled for collection (2006). Data were collected from adolescent respondents through structured in-home interviews utilizing laptop computers. In-depth interviews were conducted at the first wave with a subsample (n=100) of the respondents. Parent data was collected via a short, self-administered questionnaire at the first wave.
