This data collection contains a complete or 100-percent count of all persons in group quarters by sex and single years of age up to 74 years old with a category for all persons 75 years old and older, as well as a total. The distribution is repeated for 18 racial/ethnic groups. The group quarters population includes persons in institutional group quarters such as homes, schools, hospitals, or wards for the physically and mentally handicapped, hospitals or wards for mental, tubercular, or chronically ill patients, homes for unwed mothers, nursing, convalescent, and rest homes for the aged and dependent, orphanages, and correctional facilities. Noninstitutional group quarters cover rooming and boarding houses, general hospitals, including nurses' and interns' dormitories, college student dormitories, religious group quarters, and similar housing. Data are available for all counties and independent cities.

The major objective of this study was to examine how physical characteristics of commercial centers and demographic characteristics of residential areas contribute to crime and how these characteristics affect reactions to crime in mixed commercial-residential settings. Information on physical characteristics includes type of business, store hours, arrangement of buildings, and defensive modifications in the area. Demographic variables cover racial composition, average household size and income, and percent change of occupancy. The crime data describe six types of crime: robbery, burglary, assault, rape, personal theft, and shoplifting.

This project was undertaken to establish a computerized skeletal database composed of recent forensic cases to represent the present ethnic diversity and demographic structure of the United States population. The intent was to accumulate a forensic skeletal sample large and diverse enough to reflect different socioeconomic groups of the general population from different geographical regions of the country in order to enable researchers to revise the standards being used for forensic skeletal identification. The database is composed of eight data files, comprising four categories. The primary "biographical" or "identification" files (Part 1, Demographic Data, and Part 2, Geographic and Death Data) comprise the first category of information and pertain to the positive identification of each of the 1,514 data records in the database. Information in Part 1 includes sex, ethnic group affiliation, birth date, age at death, height (living and cadaver), and weight (living and cadaver). Variables in Part 2 pertain to the nature of the remains, means and sources of identification, city and state/country born, occupation, date missing/last seen, date of discovery, date of death, time since death, cause of death, manner of death, deposit/exposure of body, area found, city, county, and state/country found, handedness, and blood type. The Medical History File (Part 3) represents the second category of information and contains data on the documented medical history of the individual. Variables in Part 3 include general comments on medical history as well as comments on congenital malformations, dental notes, bone lesions, perimortem trauma, and other comments. The third category consists of an inventory file (Part 4, Skeletal Inventory Data) in which data pertaining to the specific contents of the database are maintained. This includes the inventory of skeletal material by element and side (left and right), indicating the condition of the bone as either partial or complete. The variables in Part 4 provide a skeletal inventory of the cranium, mandible, dentition, and postcranium elements and identify the element as complete, fragmentary, or absent. If absent, four categories record why it is missing. The last part of the database is composed of three skeletal data files, covering quantitative observations of age-related changes in the skeleton (Part 5), cranial measurements (Part 6), and postcranial measurements (Part 7). Variables in Part 5 provide assessments of epiphyseal closure and cranial suture closure (left and right), rib end changes (left and right), Todd Pubic Symphysis, Suchey-Brooks Pubic Symphysis, McKern & Steward--Phases I, II, and III, Gilbert & McKern--Phases I, II, and III, auricular surface, and dorsal pubic pitting (all for left and right). Variables in Part 6 include cranial measurements (length, breadth, height) and mandibular measurements (height, thickness, diameter, breadth, length, and angle) of various skeletal elements. Part 7 provides postcranial measurements (length, diameter, breadth, circumference, and left and right, where appropriate) of the clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, scarum, innominate, femur, tibia, fibula, and calcaneus. A small file of noted problems for a few cases is also included (Part 8).

This data collection explores the relationship between homicide and ethnicity in California during 1850-1900. The data are presented in three files. Part 1, Homicide, includes information on time, place, location, and cause of the crime for all murder cases in seven California counties. The relationship between the victim and the accused, and the race, sex, age, and occupation of each are also provided. Part 2, Indictment, includes information on criminal charge, plea, verdict, and sentence for all murder trials in the same seven counties during the time period. Part 3 provides information on all prisoners incarcerated in California for murder. Included are age, sex, ethnicity, place of birth, and occupation of each prisoner, as well as sentence, disposition of case, years served, and year in which the prisoner was released.

Does the rate of violent victimization differ across race and ethnic groups? In an effort to answer this question, this study sought to examine the violent victimization rate and the factors influencing ethnic-specific rates of violence in the city of Miami. Administrative data were obtained from the United States Bureau of the Census and the Miami Police Department Research Unit. For the groups of people identified as Afro Americans, Latinos, and Haitians, the numbers who were victims of aggravated assault and robbery in 1997 are included along with the assault and robbery rates for each group. The remaining variables are the percent of female-headed households, percent below poverty line, percent of young males out of the labor force and unemployed, residential instability, vacant and household instability, and the percent of 1980-1990 immigrants.

Since 1976, the United States has witnessed a steady and precipitous decline in intimate partner homicides. This study builds on the work of Dugan et al. (1999, 2000) and Browne and Williams (1989) by examining, in greater detail, the relationship between intimate partner homicide and gender, race, criminal justice system response, and domestic violence services. Specifically, the study examines the net effect of criminal justice system response and federally-funded domestic violence shelters on victimization of white, African American, and Hispanic males and females. This study used aggregated data from the 58 counties in California from 1987 to 2000. Homicide data were gathered by the State of California Department of Justice, Criminal Justice Statistics Center. Data on domestic violence resources were obtained from the Governor's Office of Criminal Justice Planning, Domestic Violence Branch, in the form of detailed reports from domestic violence shelters in the state. Based on these records, the researchers computed the number of federally-funded shelter-based organizations in a given county over time. Data on criminal justice responses at the county level were gathered from the State of California Department of Justice, Criminal Justice Statistics Center. These data included domestic violence arrests and any convictions and incarceration that followed those arrests. The researchers disaggregated these criminal justice system measures by race and gender. In order to account for population differences and changes over time, rates were computed per 100,000 adults (age 18 and older).

Investigation and Prosecution of Homicide Cases in the United States, 1995-2000: The Process for Federal Involvement (ICPSR 4540)

This study addressed questions related to potential geographic and racial disparity in the investigation and prosecution of federal capital cases and examined the process by which criminal cases, specially homicide cases, enter the federal criminal justice system. The primary method of data collection used was face-to-face interviews of key criminal justice officials within each district included in the study. Between 2000 and 2004, the researchers visited nine federal districts and interviewed all actors in the state and federal criminal justice systems who potentially would play a role in determining whether a homicide case was investigated and prosecuted in the state or federal systems. The study focused on homicide cases because federal homicides represented the offense of conviction in all capital case convictions in the federal system under the 2000 and 2001 DOJ reports (see U.S. Department of Justice, "The Federal Death Penalty System: A Statistical Survey (1988-2000)," Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Justice, September 12, 2000, and U.S. Department of Justice, "The Federal Death Penalty System: Supplementary Data, Analysis and Revised Protocols for Capital Case Review," Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Justice, June 6, 2001). In addition, federally related homicides are frequently involved with drug, gang, and/or organized crime investigations. Using 11 standardized interview protocols, developed in consultation with members of the project's advisory group, research staff interviewed local investigative agencies (police chief or his/her representative, section heads for homicide, drug, gang, or organized crime units as applicable to the agency structure), federal investigative agencies (Special Agent-in-Charge or designee, section heads of relevant units), local prosecutors (District Attorney, Assistant District Attorney, including the line attorneys and section heads), and defense attorneys who practiced in federal court. Due to the extensive number of issues to be covered with the U.S. Attorneys' Offices, interviews were conducted with: (1) the U.S. Attorney or designated representative, (2) section heads, and (3) Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) within the respective sections. Because the U.S. Attorneys were appointed following the change in the U.S. Presidency in 2000, a slightly altered U.S. Attorney questionnaire was designed for interviews with the former U.S. Attorney who was in office during the study period of 1995 through 2000. In some instances, because the project focus was on issues and processes from 1995 through 2000, a second individual with longer tenure was chosen to be interviewed simultaneously when the head or section head was newer to the position. In some instances when a key respondent was unavailable during the site visit and no acceptable alternative could be identified, arrangements were made to complete the interview by telephone after the visit. The interviews included questions related to the nature of the local crime problem, agency crime priorities, perceived benefits of the federal over the local process, local and federal resources, nature and target of joint task forces, relationships between and among agencies, policy and agreements, definitions and understanding of federal jurisdiction, federal investigative strategies, case flow, and attitudes toward the death penalty.

This study used court records and interviews with disputants, litigants, and mediators in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, to compare the effects of ethnicity and gender in mediated versus adjudicated small claims disputes. Initial structured telephone interviews with both adjudicated and mediated claimants and respondents (Parts 1-4) were conducted. Follow-up questionnaires (Parts 6-8) were then administered to the initial interviewed groups. Data from mediators (Part 9) were collected from self-administered structured questionnaires. Pertinent questions from all eight survey instruments were combined into a master file (Part 5). This data collection also includes two qualitative summary files of adjudicated and mediated cases (Parts 10-11). The unit of analysis is the small claims case.

The Mortality Detail File: External Cause Extract is a special subset of data prepared from the MORTALITY DETAIL FILES, 1968-1991 (ICPSR 7632). Due to changes in Cause of Death definitions incorporated in the INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES, NINTH REVISION (ICD-9), the 1968-1978 data files differ slightly from the 1979-1980 data files. The 1968-1978 data reflect cause of death codes of the INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES ADAPTED FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES, EIGHTH REVISION (ICDA-8). The period immediately following (1979-80) utilizes ICD-9 cause of death codes. In addition to the differences in the Cause of Death codes and recodes, the 1979-1980 data include three variables not available in the 1968-1978 datasets. These are: mortality by marital status, state or country of birth, and place of death and status of decedent when death occurred in a hospital or medical center. With these exceptions, the data are similar in structure and content to the 1968-1978 data and provide detailed personal and geographic information such as month and day of death, decedent's race and gender, age of deceased at time of death, place of decedent's residence (specific to the city level), place of death (specific to the county level), and whether an autopsy was performed. The 1979-1980 files also contain new variables pertinent to criminal justice research: handgun versus other gun accidents, handgun versus other firearm suicides, handgun versus other firearm homicides, and drug poison versus other poison homicides.

This project orignally was undertaken to compile a definitive
database on the personal, social, economic, career, and political
attributes of judges who served on the United States Courts of Appeals from
1801 to 1994 - it has now been updated to include information through the year 2000. The database includes conventional social background
variables such as appointing president, religion, political party
affiliation, education, and prior experience. In addition, unique items are
provided: the temporal sequence of prior career experiences, the
timing of and reason for leaving the bench, gender, race and ethnicity,
position numbering analogous to the scheme used for the Supreme Court,
American Bar Association rating, and net worth (for judges who began
service on the bench after 1978). The second objective of this project
was to merge
these data with a multi-user database on United States Courts of Appeals decisions
that is headed by Donald Songer and funded by the National Science
Foundation. That database includes a unique identification number
for each judge participating in a particular decision. The combined
databases
should enable scholars to explore: (1) intra- and inter-circuit fluctuation
in the distribution of social background characteristics, (2) generational
and presidential cohort variation in these attributes, and (3) state
and partisan control of seats. The collection also facilitates the
construction of models that examine the effects of personal attributes on

The primary purpose of the National Neighborhood Crime Study (NNCS) was to assemble tract-level crime and sociodemographic data for cities across the United States in order to permit analyses of the sources of crime for "communities" of different racial-ethnic and class composition. The NNCS also sought to examine the extent to which the causes of crime in communities are contingent on the types of geographic region, labor market, or other contextual characteristics. To fulfill these purposes, the NNCS compiled crime and sociodemographic data for census tracts in a representative sample of large United States cities for 2000. The dataset includes: (1) tract-level crime data pertaining to seven of the FBI's crime index offenses; (2) tract-level information on social disorganization, structural disadvantage, socioeconomic inequality, mortgage lending, and other control variables garnered from the 2000 United States Census of Population and Housing Summary File 3 (SF3) and other publicly available sources; (3) city-level information for the city in which the tract is located, focused on labor market structure, socioeconomic inequality, population change, and other control variables; and (4) metropolitan area data for the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) or Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA) in which the tract is located, focused on labor market structure, socioeconomic inequality, population change, and other control variables (also taken from the 2000 Census and other publicly available sources). The primary purpose of the second wave of the National Neighborhood Crime Study (NNCS2) was to develop a panel dataset of serious reported crimes in urban neighborhoods circa two time points - 2000 and 2010. These data offer the opportunity to assess the sources and consequences of neighborhood crime change for "communities" of different ethno-racial and economic compositions across the United States. The study also sought to examine the role of a neighborhood's broader ecology on crime levels and crime change by integrating indicators of city and/or metropolitan conditions. The NNCS2 includes two datasets. The first dataset, the NNCS2-Panel file (NNCS2-P), contains information on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Part 1 Index crimes (except arson), socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, and a variety of other neighborhood and city level controls for circa 2000 and 2010 for tracts in 81 of the 91 cities in the NNCS, wave 1. The second dataset, the NNCS2-Cross-Sectional file (NNCS2-CS), allows for examination of the local and contextual sources of neighborhood crime inequality circa 2010. The NNCS2-CS incorporates parallel data for census tracts and cities as in the Panel file, but includes a few additional cities for which panel data could not be compiled, as well information on the metropolitan areas within which cities are located.

Data were collected in this follow-up survey to compare estimates of the incidence of intrafamily physical violence with estimates obtained in an earlier survey, PHYSICAL VIOLENCE IN AMERICAN FAMILIES, 1976 (ICPSR 7733). The main component of this survey design was a national cross-sectional survey of adults in the United States who either (1) were currently married or living together, (2) were single parents with children under 18 in the household, or (3) had been married or had lived with a partner of the opposite sex within the past two years. Approximately two-thirds of American households met one of these three requirements at the time of the survey. Another objective of the survey was to generate comparisons of the incidence of intrafamily physical violence by race and ethnicity. This secondary data analysis included analyzing pre and post-test intervention data from the Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates (SAPU) online sexual assault prevention education program.
The SAPU data included a large, demographically diverse national sample of college students, allowing for a more in-depth investigation of the prevalence and predictors of sexual assault victimization and perpetration across different types of college campuses. Furthermore, the dataset included contemporaneous measures of unwanted sexual contact victimization and perpetration, dating abuse victimization, and harassment victimization.
The aims for the study included the following:
- Aim 1: Examine variation in school-level prevalence of sexual assault victimization and perpetration by school type, size, and region from academic years (AY) 2016-2017 to 2019-2020.
- Aim 2: Assess subgroup differences (by gender identity, sexual orientation, race) in school-level prevalence of sexual assault victimization and perpetration, accounting for school type, size, region.
- Aim 3: Investigate the relationship between attitudes and perceptions of campus norms and self-reports of sexual assault victimization and perpetration, accounting for precampus sexual assault and individual demographics and school characteristics (type, size, region).
- Aim 4: Examine variation in the relationship between attitudes and perceptions of campus norms and self-reports of sexual assault victimization and perpetration by subgroups (gender identity, sexual orientation, race), accounting for precampus sexual assault and individual and school characteristics (type, size, region).
- Aim 5: Examine variation in bystander intentions, efficacy, and behaviors and self-reports of sexual assault victimization and perpetration by subgroups (gender identity, sexual orientation, race), accounting for attitudes, perceptions of campus norms, and precampus sexual assault, as well as individual and school characteristics (type, size, region).

This study used the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to explore whether changes in the 2000-2010 decade were associated with changes in the prevalence and nature of violence between and among Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics. This study also aimed to construct more accessible NIBRS cross-sectional and longitudinal databases containing race/ethnic-specific measures of violent victimization, offending, and arrest. Researchers used NIBRS extract files to examine the influence of recent social changes on violence for Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics, and used advanced imputation techniques to account for missing values on race/ethnic variables. Data for this study was also drawn from the National Historical Geographic Information System, the Census Gazetteer, and Law Enforcement Officers Killed or Assaulted (LEOKA).
The collection includes 1 Stata data file with 614 cases and 159 variables and 2 Stata syntax files.

The Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) was a large-scale, interdisciplinary study of how families, schools, and neighborhoods affect child and adolescent development. One component of the PHDCN was the Longitudinal Cohort Study, which was a series of coordinated longitudinal studies that followed over 6,000 randomly selected children, adolescents, and young adults, and their primary caregivers over time to examine the changing circumstances of their lives, as well as the personal characteristics, that might lead them toward or away from a variety of antisocial behaviors. Numerous measures were administered to respondents to gauge various aspects of human development, including individual differences, as well as family, peer, and school influences.
