This dataset contains measures of the number and density of hospitals per United States Census Tract or ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) in 2023. The dataset includes four separate files for four different geographic areas (GIS shapefiles from the United States Census Bureau). The four geographies include:

  • Census Tract 2010
  • Census Tract 2020
  • ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) 2010
  • ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) 2020

The purpose of this study was to measure the number and density of hospitals per Census Tract or Zip Code Tabulation Area in the United States in 2023.

The research team used hospital location data from the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data (HIFLD) and determined each hospital's Census Tract or ZCTA for each year by mapping its latitude and longitude to the 2010 and 2020 TIGER/Line shapefiles from the US Census Bureau (United States Census Bureau 2012, 2021a, 2021b, 2022).

The population denominator for the per capita density variables came from the Decennial Census (United States Census Bureau, 2024).

Data for the land area denominator came from the land area of the Census Tract or ZCTA from the 2010 or 2020 TIGER/Line shapefiles (United States Census Bureau, 2021a).

Data and Documentation were originally deposited in openICPSR Project 222901.

Variables in the study include information about hospital ownership, hospital type, and density and count of hospitals per census tract and ZCTA.

2025-05-22 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

    • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
