The East Asian Social Survey (EASS) is a biennial social survey project that serves as a cross-national network of the following four General Social Survey type surveys in East Asia: the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), the Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS), the Korean General Social Survey (KGSS), and the Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS), and comparatively examines diverse aspects of social life in these regions. Since its 1st module survey in 2006, EASS produces and disseminates its module survey datasets and this is the harmonized data for the 6th module survey, called 'Families in East Asia'.

Survey information in this module is the same topic as the first module of the EASS 2006, and it focuses on family dynamics and relations. Respondents were asked about details of their family members; such as, the number of family members, age, sex, birth order, marital status, employment status, whether they co-resides with and whether they are alive or deceased. Other information collected includes contact frequency, intergenerational support exchanges, and attitudes toward financial support from family members. Questions also include opinions regarding household chores, lifestyle preferences, health of respondent and parents, as well as family obligations. Demographic and other background information includes age, sex, marital status, religion, years of education completed, employment status, income, and household size and composition.

The purpose of this study is to provide students and scholars in the social science community with integrated East Asian Social Survey datasets collected by coordinated efforts of the participating institutions in China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

For information on study design, users should refer to PI Documentation or visit the East Asian Social Survey (EASS) website.

Each participating country conducted its own multi-stage area probability sample. Specifically:

  • China: Four-stage probability sampling
  • Japan: Two-stage stratified random sampling; stratified by regional block and population size.
  • Korea: Four-stage area probability sampling
  • Taiwan: Three-stage stratified PPS sampling: (1) Primary Sampling Unit (PSU) =township, (2) village (administrative unit under township), (3) individual person.

Cross-sectional

Adult populace drawn from the national sample in the four countries. Specifically:

  • China: 18 and up Chinese citizens living in the China mainland
  • Japan: Japanese men and women 20-89 years of age living in Japan
  • Korea: Adult citizens aged 18 and over who live in household in Korea
  • Taiwan: Population registers

Individual

China: 68.9 percent

Japan:

  • 2017: 55.6 percent (JGSS official formula); 49.6 percent (No. of R/Initial sample size)
  • 2018: 54.3 percent (JGSS official formula); 49.9 percent (No. of R/Initial sample size)

Korea: 46.9 percent

Taiwan: 49.7 percent

2022-02-03 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created variable labels and/or value labels.
  • Created online analysis version with question text.

The data are not weighted, however, this collection contains the weight variable WEIGHT that should be used in analysis. Each participating country weighted the data differently. For further information on the weight variable, please refer to the "Study Description Form" P.I. Documentation.
