This collection includes a combined dataset of the Generations study wave 1 (baseline) survey and the TransPop study transgender survey. The two studies have many overlapping variables, and they examined topics such as respondents' health outcomes and behaviors, experiences with discrimination, identity, and transition-related experiences. Data from these studies were merged to allow for analysis of the combined LGBT populations. This dataset has also been reweighted to be representative of these populations.

The complete Generations study data (baseline, wave 2, and wave 3 survey data) can be found under study number 37166, and the complete TransPop study data (transgender and cisgender survey data) can be found under study number 37938. For detailed information on the Generations and TransPop studies, including related publications, please refer to their respective DSDR/ICPSR study pages.

2016-03 -- 2017-03 (Generations Wave 1 (Baseline) Survey), 2016-04 -- 2016-08 (TransPop Period 1 (TransPop1) Transgender Survey), 2017-06 -- 2018-12 (TransPop Period 2 (TransPop2) Transgender Survey)
  1. Case counts for TransPop respondents differ between this combined data collection and the original TransPop collection. The combined dataset is restricted to TransPop respondents age 60 and younger to match the age groups in the Generations study, and in order to weight the data to the population of 18- to 60-year-olds.

The purpose of combining data from the Generations and TransPop studies is to allow for analysis of the LGBT population.

Participants from both studies were recruited and screened by Gallup, Inc., a survey research consulting company. Generations respondents were eligible to participate if they identified as sexual minority (and not transgender) in response to a question that asked if they were lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or same-gender loving and were in the age and race/ethnicity groups targeted for the 3 cohorts under investigation in the study: ages 18-25, 34-41, or 52-59; Black, Latino, or White or multi-racial including one of these; completed 6th grade at least; and if they spoke English well enough to conduct the phone interview in English. Respondents who were transgender, regardless of their sexual orientation, were screened for participation in the TransPop study. (Respondents who were gender non-binary but not identified as transgender were included in the Generations study.) TransPop respondents were also screened for similar eligibility requirements, including adult over age 18, education above 6th grade, and ability to conduct the interview in English. Respondents who met the studies' eligibility criteria and agreed to participate were emailed or mailed the survey questionnaire to complete by self-administration. They also received a $25 gift certificate for their participation. Please see the Methodology and Technical Notes user guides for additional information on each study's recruitment and procedures.
