The main objectives of this data collection effort were to assemble a set of cross-nationally comparable microdata samples based on the 1990 national population and housing censuses in countries of Europe and North America, and to use these samples to study the social and economic conditions of older persons. The samples are designed to allow research on a wide range of issues related to aging, as well as on other social phenomena. The Latvian dataset examined the type and size of dwelling units, amenities such as flush toilets, baths/showers, and kitchens, and the type of utility systems that were available. Also covered were the characteristics of the buildings within which these dwelling units were located. Demographic and socioeconomic information on household members includes age, sex, ethnic background, household size and composition, marital status, disabilities, fertility, mortality, education, religion, employment status, income, and occupation.

(1) The data are part of a set of microdata census samples assembled by the Population Activities Unit, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, with financial assistance from the United Nations Population Fund and the United States National Institute on Aging. The arrangements governing the release of data from this project stipulate that they should be used solely for social and behavioral science research. Also, the data and other materials are to be used solely for statistical analysis and reporting of aggregated information, and not for the investigation of specific individuals or organizations. Users should also understand that attempts to disseminate copies of the data, in whole or in part, or to identify individual respondents may be subject to prosecution under applicable laws. In addition, users of these data agree to send a copy of any publications based on the data to: Population Activities Unit, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Palais des Nations, CH-1211, Geneve 10, Switzerland. In addition to the SAS data file provided by the principal investigator, ICPSR is distributing an ASCII data file extracted from the SAS file. Analysis of the ASCII file may be facilitated by dividing it.

The codebook and data collection instrument are provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Web site on the Internet.

Individual-based sample of 791,485 persons both noninstitutionalized and institutionalized with progressive oversampling with age, while retaining information on all persons co-residing in the noninstitutionalized sampled persons' dwelling units (N = 752,060).
