The 1915 Iowa State Census Project (ICPSR 28501)

The 1915 Iowa State Census is a unique document. It was the first census in the United States to include information on education and income prior to the United States Federal Census of 1940. It contains considerable detail on other aspects of individuals and households, e.g., religion, wealth and years in the United States and Iowa. The Iowa State Census of 1915 was a complete sample of the residents of the state and the returns were written by census takers (assessors) on index cards. These cards were kept in the Iowa State Archives in Des Moines and were microfilmed in 1986 by the Genealogical Society of Salt Lake City. The census cards were sorted by county, although large cities (those having more than 25,000 residents) were grouped separately. Within each county or large city, records were alphabetized by last name and within last name by first name. This data set includes individual-level records for three of the largest Iowa cities (Des Moines, Dubuque, and Davenport; the Sioux City films were unreadable) and for ten counties that did not contain a large city. Variables include name, age, place of residence, earnings, education, birthplace, religion, marital status, race, occupation, military service, among others. Data on familial ties between records are also included.

Age and Residence Differences in Household Composition, 1980: [United States] (ICPSR 9253)

These data were collected to gain a better understanding of the living arrangements of persons 65 and older in the United States. The collection includes four related files. The Complete Person Extract hierarchical file (Part 1) contains data for households with one or more members aged 65 or older. These data consist of household records followed by varying numbers of person records that were extracted from CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980: [UNITED STATES]: PUBLIC USE MICRODATA SAMPLE (C SAMPLE): 1-PERCENT SAMPLE (ICPSR 8114) for all fifty states. The three rectangular files (Parts 2-4) are "complex household" subsets of the Complete Person Extract file. Complex households are households containing three or more persons and households containing two persons who are not related by marriage. There were 47,878 such households identified, containing 157,940 persons of whom 62,873 were 65 and over. The Complex Households file contains selected variables pulled from the PUMS housing records. The People and Elders in Complex Households files contain selected variables pulled from the PUMS person records, and specify kinship and other relationships for all persons and all elders 65 and older in complex households. Two additional rectangular data files (Part 6 and Part 7) containing all households and persons have been extracted from the original hierarchical file (Part 1).

These instructional materials were prepared for use with AGRICULTURAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC RECORDS FOR HOUSEHOLDS IN THE NORTH, 1860 (ICPSR 7420), compiled by Fred Bateman and James D. Foust. The data file and accompanying documentation are provided to assist educators in (an SPSS portable file) instructing students about the history of agriculture and rural life in the North, just prior to the Civil War. An instructor's handout has also been included. This handout contains the following sections, among others: (1) General goals for student analysis of quantitative datasets, (2) Specific goals in studying this dataset, (3) Suggested appropriate courses for use of the dataset, (4) Tips for using the dataset, and (5) Related secondary source readings. Demographic, occupational, and economic information for over 21,000 rural households in the northern United States in 1860 are presented in the dataset. The data were obtained from the manuscript agricultural and population schedules of the 1860 United States Census and are provided for all households in a single township from each of the 102 randomly-selected counties in 16 northern states. Variables in the dataset include farm values, livestock, and crop production figures for the households that owned or operated farms (over half the households sampled), as well as value of real and personal estate, color, sex, age, literacy, school attendance, occupation, place of birth, and parents' nationality of all individuals residing in the sampled townships.

This project collects new data and updates existing population and environmental data on rural and urban residents in the Brazilian Amazon region. New data include follow up surveys in Santarem, urban samples and satellite data for Altamira and Santarem, and a new study site in the epicenter of mechanized soybean expansion in the state of Mato Grosso, at Lucas do Rio Verde. This includes a complete set of data for the previous 30 years of change in the new study site. The resulting data make this the largest social survey carried out in the Amazon region, with more than 1,000 properties and more than 2,500 households, covering an area in excess of 10,000 square kilometers.

The American Community Survey (ACS) is a part of the Decennial Census Program, and is designed to produce critical information about the characteristics of local communities. The ACS publishes social, housing, and economic characteristics for demographic groups covering a broad spectrum of geographic areas in the United States and Puerto Rico. Every year the ACS supports the release of single-year estimates for geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more. Demographic variables include sex, age, relationship, households by type, race, and Hispanic origin. Social characteristics variables include school enrollment, educational attainment, marital status, fertility, grandparents caring for children, veteran status, disability status, residence one year ago, place of birth, United States citizenship status, year of entry, world region of birth of foreign born, language spoken at home, and ancestry. Variables focusing on economic characteristics include employment status, commuting to work, occupation, industry, class of worker, income and benefits, and poverty status. Variables focusing on housing characteristics include occupancy, units in structure, year structure was built, number of rooms, number of bedrooms, housing tenure, year householder moved into unit, vehicles available, house heating fuel, utility costs, occupants per room, housing value, and mortgage status. The American Community Survey is conducted under the authority of Title 13, United States Code, Sections 141 and 193, and response is mandatory.

Annual Health Survey (AHS), India, 2007-2012 (ICPSR 38097)

The Annual Health Survey (AHS), conducted by the Government of India between July 2010 and May 2013, investigates maternal and child health in nine states: Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. These states constitute about 70 percent of neonatal deaths in India and about one-in-five neonatal deaths globally. The AHS consists of a three-round panel that interviewed over 4 million households in each round, as well as a one-time Clinical, Anthropometric, and Bio-Chemical Survey (CAB). The data were originally released to the public in 2015 as a set of 45 .csv files. The .csv files are included in a restricted-use zipped package as part of the ICPSR release (see dataset 21).

The survey focused on topics such as household composition, caste, fertility, family planning, pre- and post-natal care, breastfeeding, infant mortality, illness, disease, disability, and health care practices. Demographic information includes sex, age, education, occupation, marital status, household size, and religion. The CAB files contain biometric data including but not limited to height, weight, blood pressure, hemoglobin, pulse, and blood glucose.

Potential data users should note that the public-use and restricted-use versions of the datasets are the same except for the masking of day component variables for certain dates in the public-use versions of the files (please see the Description of Variables section for full details). Therefore, only researchers with a limited set of research questions that require full birth, marriage, and death dates will need to apply for the restricted-use versions of the data files.

Additionally, because the final data files are very large and potentially very time consuming to analyze on personal computers, researchers have the option to download ten-percent samples of each file (see datasets 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19, and 20). These samples contain the same variables as the original files but only ten percent of the records. The samples were determined by taking a randomly selected ten percent of households in each district. P.I. codebooks were not produced for these samples. Please note that the ten-percent samples for each dataset were selected independently, so it is not advised to merge across datasets within the AHS using these samples, as the match rates will be very low.

Bicol Multipurpose Survey (BMS), 1978: [Philippines] (ICPSR 6878)

The Bicol Multipurpose Survey (BMS) was designed to assess the impact of the Bicol River Basin Development Project (BRBDP) on one of the poorest regions in the Philippines. Using data collected from both semi-urban and rural areas of the Bicol Region, the BMS sought to examine the impact not only of the various development projects of the BRBDP such as irrigation, electricity, and road repair, but also the economic, social, and health issues faced by the residents of the Bicol Region. The survey gathered data for 17 project areas and 3 cities in the provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, and Sorsogon. Household-level information (Part 1) covers household characteristics, physical environment, income and expenditures, distance from schools, and respondents' feelings about household conditions and the progress of the barangay in which they lived (a barangay is a political subdivision equivalent to a village in rural areas and to a neighborhood in urban areas). Information on topics such as attitudes about foods during pregnancy, infant and child care, prenatal care, community involvement, and work history are contained in a separate Mothers Data file (Part 2). The individual-level data (Parts 3-5) contain demographic information such as age, sex, and education, and include time spent on household and occupational tasks. Information was collected from persons as young as 6 years of age, but was coded for individuals 15 years and older for tasks such as selling, food preparation, farm work, raising livestock and poultry, and the type and amount of fishing. Morbidity data from over 17,000 individuals are also included. The Household Production files (Parts 6-11) cover agriculture and business, crop production, rice farming, raising livestock and poultry, type of fishing done, and quantity of fish caught. Also included are income figures, assets, and liabilities. The Barangay Survey (Part 12) examines the physical aspects of the barangay and the use of social services in the area to determine the impact of the BRBDP and outside influences. The barangay captain or official records provided information on the physical characteristics, community services, medical services, social services, sanitation, and educational systems available within the barangay. The Extension Workers Survey (Part 13) asked 324 workers about their knowledge and activities regarding agricultural practices such as fertilizer use, pest and disease control, and other aspects of planting and transplanting. Through the Medical Practitioners Survey (Part 14), 426 practitioners were asked questions on their education and training, general health knowledge and experience, and knowledge and attitudes about birth control. Data collected in 1978, 1983, and 1994 can be used individually or merged together on a unique household identifier found in Part 15 (with the exception of the Medical Practitioners and Extension Workers data).

A total of 1,901 households were surveyed in 1983, most of which were previously surveyed in 1978. An additional replacement sample of 420 was drawn from the 1978 rosters for the 1983 survey. Respondents were again asked about income, employment, education, health status, and health services. Additionally, the 1983 survey gathered extensive information on fishing, business expenses, and small business activities, along with fertility, pregnancy, and mortality histories. Due to time and cost considerations, detailed questions on credit, some health-related items regarding beliefs, chronic illnesses, and breast-feeding, and detailed questions on crops were not included in the 1983 BMS. Section I, Household Data (Parts 1-32), focused on background information, transportation, environment, morbidity, and health services. Information was gathered about people living in the household six months prior to the survey as well as people who had left the household five years prior to the survey. Expenditure data on schooling were gathered for individuals 6-30 years of age. Marriage and pregnancy histories were elicited from women aged 15-49 along with family planning and birth interval information. Section II, Agriculture/Income/Labor Data (Parts 33-87), posed questions on employment, wages, and hired labor for men, women, and children aged 6-15. Data on coconut, sugar cane, and abaca crop production were also gathered, along with information about livestock and poultry, and extensive data were collected about fishing activities. Fishing boat owners were interviewed, along with capture fisherman who fished both inland and marine waters. The Barangay Survey (Parts 88-96) provided information about characteristics of the barangay in which the respondent lived (a barangay is a political subdivision equivalent to a village in rural areas and to a neighborhood in urban areas), services available in the community, types of social services or practitioners, the availability of public utilities and transportation, different types of organizations present within the barangay, employment conditions, and environmental sanitation conditions.

The objectives of the 1994 Bicol Multipurpose Survey, which were similar to those of the BICOL MULTIPURPOSE SURVEY (BMS), 1978: [PHILIPPINES] (ICPSR 6878) and the 1983 BMS (ICPSR 6889), were to gather information on income, earnings, mobility, fertility, farm production, and health from the residents of the Bicol Region in the Philippines. Households in the province of Camarines Sur were surveyed, with a primary focus on household characteristics, adult and child health, value and income of assets or properties, expenditures on education and liabilities, income such as cash and in-kind transfers, and income from household members not residing in the household, along with agricultural production of rice and other crops. Information about the barangay (a barangay is a political subdivision equivalent to a village in rural areas and to a neighborhood in urban areas) in which the household was located includes environmental sanitation, availability of community services, and cost for community services or family planning. Data regarding successor households (households where the children had taken over the management and supervision of family assets) were examined, along with intergenerational income mobility data (the impact of parental income and investments on children).

Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (ICPSR 178)

Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS) is a study of Filipino women who gave birth between May 1, 1983 and April 30, 1984. The CLHNS collects information on infant feeding patterns, particularly the overall sequencing of feeding events (i.e., of both milk and nonmilk items), the various factors affecting feeding decisions at each point in time, and how different feeding patterns affect the infant, mother, and household. The intent is to understand how infant feeding decisions by the household interact with various social, economic, and environmental factors to affect health, nutitional, demographic, and economic outcomes. The Cebu cohort of mothers, infants, and for many surveys their siblings, has been followed for a number of economic, demographic and health related follow-up surveys. The description of these follow-up surveys and access to them is found on the Carolina Population Center Web site.

Designed to facilitate analysis of the status of Blacks around the turn of the century, this oversample of Black-headed households in the United States was drawn from the 1910 manuscript census schedules. The sample complements the 1/250 Public Use Sample of the 1910 census manuscripts collected by Samuel H. Preston at the University of Pennsylvania: CENSUS OF POPULATION, 1910 [UNITED STATES]: PUBLIC USE SAMPLE (ICPSR 9166). Part 1, Household Records, contains a record for each household selected in the sample and supplies variables describing the location, type, and composition of the households. Part 2, Individual Records, contains a record for each individual residing in the sampled households and includes information on demographic characteristics, occupation, literacy, nativity, ethnicity, and fertility.

These data, which correspond to tables provided in the documentation, summarize information on the United States population aged 60 years and over that was collected in the 1980 Census of Population and Housing. The tables were prepared by the Bureau of the Census at the request of the National Institute on Aging. Variables appearing in one or more of the tables are age (in single years or five-year intervals), sex, race (black/white), living arrangements (institutionalization status, household/group quarters, living in families/alone, relationship to householder, persons per room), income (source, personal level, family level, household level, poverty status), veteran status, educational attainment, urban/rural residence, marital status, nativity status, and Spanish origin. In some of the tables totals that exclude amounts allocated for missing data are provided for purposes of comparison. The variables for which non-allocated figures are included are age, race, institutionalization status, income, veterans status, educational attainment, marital status, and Spanish origin. The file contains a complete set of tables for the United States as a whole, for each of the four Census regions, and for each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and five territories.

The China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), an ongoing open cohort, international collaborative project between the Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the National Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was designed to examine the effects of the health, nutrition, and family planning policies and programs implemented by national and local governments and to see how the social and economic transformation of Chinese society is affecting the health and nutritional status of its population. The impact on nutrition and health behaviors and outcomes is gauged by changes in community organizations and programs as well as by changes in sets of household and individual economic, demographic, and social factors.

The China Multi-Generational Panel Dataset - Liaoning (CMGPD-LN) is drawn from the population registers compiled by the Imperial Household Agency (neiwufu) in Shengjing, currently the northeast Chinese province of Liaoning, between 1749 and 1909. It provides 1.5 million triennial observations of more than 260,000 residents from 698 communities. The population mainly consists of immigrants from North China who settled in rural Liaoning during the early eighteenth century, and their descendants. The data provide socioeconomic, demographic, and other characteristics for individuals, households, and communities, and record demographic outcomes such as marriage, fertility, and mortality. The data also record specific disabilities for a subset of adult males. Additionally, the collection includes monthly and annual grain price data, custom records for the city of Yingkou, as well as information regarding natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, and earthquakes. This dataset is unique among publicly available population databases because of its time span, volume, detail, and completeness of recording, and because it provides longitudinal data not just on individuals, but on their households, descent groups, and communities.

China Multi-Generational Panel Dataset, Shuangcheng (CMGPD-SC), 1866-1913 (ICPSR 35292)

The China Multi-Generational Panel Dataset - Shuangcheng (CMGPD-SC) provides longitudinal individual, household, and community information on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of a resettled population living in Shuangcheng, a county in present-day Heilongjiang Province of Northeastern China, for the period from 1866 to 1913. The dataset includes some 1.3 million annual observations of over 100,000 unique individuals descended from families who were relocated to Shuangcheng in the early 19th century. These families were divided into 3 categories based on their place of origin: metropolitan bannermen, rural bannermen, and floating bannermen. The CMGPD-SC, like its Liaoning counterpart, the CMGPD-LN (ICPSR 27063), is a valuable data source for studying longitudinal as well as multi-generational social and demographic processes. The population categories had salient differences in social origins and land entitlements, and landholding data are available at a number of time periods, thus the CMGPD-SC is especially suitable to the study of stratification processes.

Chinese Household Income Project, 1995 (ICPSR 3012)

The purpose of this project was to measure and estimate the distribution of personal income in both rural and urban areas of the People's Republic of China. The principal investigators based their definition of income on cash payments and on a broad range of additional components: payments in kind valued at market prices, agricultural output produced for self-consumption valued at market prices, the value of food and other direct subsidies, and the imputed value of housing services. The rural component of this collection consists of two data files, one in which the individual is the unit of analysis (Part 1) and a second in which the household is the unit of analysis (Part 2). Individual rural respondents reported on their employment status, level of education, Communist Party membership, type of employer (e.g., public, private, or foreign), type of economic sector in which they were employed, occupation, whether they held a second job, retirement status, monthly pension, monthly wage, and other sources of income. Demographic variables include relationship to householder, gender, age, and student status. Rural households reported extensively on the character of the household and residence. Information was elicited on type of terrain surrounding the house, geographic position, type of house, and availability of electricity. Also reported were sources of household income (e.g., farming, industry, government, rents, and interest), taxes paid, value of farm, total amount and type of cultivated land, financial assets and debts, quantity and value of various crops, amount of grain purchased or provided by a collective, use of chemical fertilizers, gasoline, and oil, quantity and value of agricultural machinery, and all household expenditures (e.g., food, fuel, medicine, education, transportation, and electricity). The urban component of this collection also consists of two data files, one in which the individual is the unit of analysis (Part 3) and a second in which the household is the unit of analysis (Part 4). Individual urban respondents reported on their economic status within the household, Communist Party membership, sex, age, nature of employment, and relationship to the household head. Information was collected on all types and sources of income from each member of the household whether working, nonworking, or retired, all revenue received by owners of private or individual enterprises, and all in-kind payments (e.g., food, durable goods, and nondurable goods). Urban households reported total income (including salaries, interest on savings and bonds, dividends, rent, leases, alimony, gifts, and boarding fees), all types and values of food subsidies received, and total debt. Information was also gathered on household accommodations and living conditions, including number of rooms, total living area in square meters, availability and cost of running water, sanitary facilities, heating and air-conditioning equipment, kitchen availability, location of residence, ownership of home, and availability of electricity and telephone. Households reported on all their expenditures including amounts spent on food items such as wheat, rice, edible oils, pork, beef and mutton, poultry, fish and seafood, sugar, and vegetables by means of coupons in state-owned stores and at free market prices. Information was also collected on rents paid by the households, fuel available, type of transportation used, and availability and use of medical and child care.

The Chinese Household Income Project collected data in 1988, 1995, 2002, and 2007. ICPSR holds data from the first three collections, and information about these can be found on the series description page. Data collected in 2007 are available through the China Institute for Income Distribution.

This collection comprises the second round of the Community Tracking Study (CTS) Household Survey and the second round of the CTS Followback Survey. The CTS, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is a national study designed to track changes in the health care system and their effects on care delivery and individuals. Fifty-one metropolitan areas and nine nonmetropolitan areas were randomly selected to form the core of the CTS and to be representative of the nation as a whole. Consumer Expenditure Survey, 2013: Diary Survey Files (ICPSR 36275)

The Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) program provides a continuous and comprehensive flow of data on the buying habits of American consumers, including data on their expenditures, income, and consumer unit (families and single consumers) characteristics. These data are used widely in economic research and analysis, and in support of revisions of the Consumer Price Index.

The CE program is comprised of two separate components (each with its own survey questionnaire and independent sample), the Diary Survey and the quarterly Interview Survey (ICPSR 36237). This data collection contains the Diary Survey component, which was designed to obtain data on frequently purchased smaller items, including food, housing, apparel and services, transportation, entertainment, and out-of-pocket health care costs. Each consumer unit (CU) recorded its expenditures in a diary for two consecutive 1-week periods. Although the diary was designed to collect information on expenditures that could not be easily recalled over time, respondents were asked to report all expenses (except overnight travel) that the CU incurred during the survey week.

The 2013 Diary Survey release contains five sets of data files (FMLD, MEMD, EXPD, DTBD, DTID), and one processing file (DSTUB). The FMLD, MEMD, EXPD, DTBD, and DTID files are organized by the quarter of the calendar year in which the data were collected. There are four quarterly datasets for each of these files.

The FMLD files contain CU characteristics, income, and summary level expenditures; the MEMD files contain member characteristics and income data; the EXPD files contain detailed weekly expenditures at the Universal Classification Code (UCC) level; the DTBD files contain the CU's reported annual income values or the mean of the five imputed income values in the multiple imputation method; and the DTID files contain the five imputed income values. Please note that the summary level expenditure and income information on the FMLD files permit the data user to link consumer spending, by general expenditure category, and household characteristics and demographics on one set of files.

The DSTUB file provides the aggregation scheme used in the published consumer expenditure tables. The DSTUB file is further explained in Section III.F.6. "Processing Files" of the Diary Survey Users' Guide. A second documentation guide, the "Users' Guide to Income Imputation," includes information on how to appropriately use the imputed income data.

The BLS unpublished integrated CE data tables are provided as an easy-to-use tool for obtaining spending estimates. However, users are cautioned to read the BLS explanatory letter accompanying the tables. The letter explains that estimates of average expenditures on detailed spending items (such as leisure and art-related categories) may be unreliable due to so few reports of expenditures for those items.

The Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) program provides a continuous and comprehensive flow of data on the buying habits of American consumers, including data on their expenditures, income, and consumer unit (families and single consumers) characteristics. These data are used widely in economic research and analysis, and in support of revisions of the Consumer Price Index.

The CE program is comprised of two separate components, each with its own questionnaire and independent sample: (1) the quarterly Interview Survey, and (2) the Diary Survey. This data collection contains the quarterly Interview Survey data, which was designed to collect data on major items of expense which respondents could be expected to recall for 3 months or longer. Items include relatively large expenditures, such as those for property, automobiles, and major durable goods, and those that occurred on a regular basis, such as rent or utilities. The Interview Survey does not collect data on expenses for housekeeping supplies, personal care products, and nonprescription drugs, which contribute about 5 to 15 percent of total expenditures.

The 2013 Interview Survey contains eight groups of Interview data files (FMLI, MEMI, MTBI, ITBI, ITII, NTAXI, FPAR, and MCHI), forty-three Detailed Expenditure (EXPN) files, and processing files. The FMLI, MEMI, MTBI, ITBI, ITII, and NTAXI files are organized by the calendar quarter of the year in which the data were collected. There are five quarterly datasets for each of these files, running from the first quarter of 2013 through the first quarter of 2014 (with NTAXI files starting the second quarter of 2013). The FMLI file contains consumer unit (CU) characteristics, income, and summary level expenditures; the MEMI file contains member characteristics and income data; the MTBI file contains expenditures organized on a monthly basis at the Universal Classification Code (UCC) level; the ITBI file contains income data converted to a monthly time frame and assigned to UCCs; and the ITII file contains the five imputation variants of the income data converted to a monthly time frame and assigned to UCCs. The NTAXI file contains federal and state tax information for each tax unit within the CU.

The FPAR and MCHI datasets are grouped as 2-year datasets (2012 and 2013), plus the first quarter of 2014, and contain paradata about the Interview survey. The FPAR file contains CU level data about the Interview survey, including timing and record use. The MCHI file contains data about each interview contact attempt, including reasons for refusal and times of contact. Both FPAR and MCHI files contain five quarters of data.

The EXPN files contain expenditure data and ancillary descriptive information, often not available on the FMLI or MTBI files, in a format similar to the Interview questionnaire. In addition to the extra information available on the EXPN files, users can identify distinct spending categories easily and reduce processing time due to the organization of the files by type of expenditure. Each of the 43 EXPN files contains five quarters of data, directly derived from their respective questionnaire sections.

The processing files enhance computer processing and tabulation of data, and provide descriptive information on item codes. There are two types of processing files: (1) aggregation scheme files used in the published consumer expenditure survey interview tables and integrated tables (ISTUB and INTSTUB), and (2) a vehicle make file (CAPIVEHI). Social and demographic characteristics of over 23,000 families living in Indiana in 1820 are contained in this dataset. These data were obtained from the manuscript schedules of the 1820 United States Census. They were initially recorded on punch cards by the Geneological Section of the Indiana Historical Society, the cards were donated to John Modell, at the University of Minnesota, who corrected some discrepancies which he found in them. Included in the dataset are variables describing the age, sex, and racial composition of each household, as well as the location of the households and characteristics of nearly every household located in Indiana in 1820, except for those in Daviess county, whose manuscript census schedules for that year were destroyed.

The 2006 ESRU Social Mobility Survey in Mexico (SMSM) is the first nationally representative, fully probabilistic survey of inter-generational social mobility in Mexico. The main objective of the ESRU SMSM is to describe and analyze inter-generational socioeconomic mobility in Mexican society. The SMSM is a stratified multistage sample of 7,288 men and women aged 25-64 and living in private residences in Mexico. The survey collects information on the socioeconomic standing of the respondent and his/her spouse or partner, including education, occupation, income, assets, and wealth. It also includes information on the socioeconomic standing of the respondent's and his/her spouse/partner's parents and conditions when they were growing up. Additional topics include: international and domestic migration, health, occupational trajectory, opinions, and attitudes.

First Malaysian Family Life Survey, 1976-1977 (ICPSR 6170)

The First Malaysian Family Life Survey, 1976-1977 (MFLS-1), was conducted in Peninsular Malaysia as a retrospective life history survey of 1,262 households containing an ever-married woman aged 50 or younger. Full life histories were collected through personal interviews with these women and their husbands regarding fertility-related events, marriage, employment, migration, income and wealth, attitudes and expectations with respect to family size and composition, community characteristics, time allocation, and transfers of goods, help, and money between the respondents and others. The survey collected data in three separate rounds held at four-month intervals. The majority of the survey was administered in Round 1, while the second and third rounds collected data on new questions not asked in Round 1 and also updated some of the Round 1 data, most notably the work and pregnancy histories. In October 1981, the individual-level dataset (Part 142) was created, consisting of one fixed-length record per individual per household. Variables included at both the individual and household levels provide information on demographics, time allocation, and income and wealth. Due to processing constraints, most of the retrospective data have been omitted from the individual-level dataset.

Gansu Poverty and Education Project, Wave 1, 2000 (ICPSR 28661)

China's dramatic economic and educational changes over the past 20 years have stimulated concerns about the education of children in rural areas. Recent empirical studies give evidence of growing disparities in educational opportunities between urban and rural areas and socio-economic and geographic inequities in basic-level educational participation within rural areas. These studies also point to a persisting gender gap in enrollment and to the disproportionate impact of poverty on girls' educational participation (Hannum 1998b; Zhang 1998). This study focused on the influence of poverty on the schooling of 11 to 14 year-old children in rural Gansu, an interior province in Northwest China characterized by high rates of rural poverty and a substantial dropout problem. Substantively, this study was innovative in adopting an integrated approach: it focused on the community, family, and school contexts in which children are educated. Methodologically, the study combined information on children's academic performance and school characteristics, with a household-based sample that allowed examination of the academic experiences of children who have left the education system as well as those who have persisted in it. Finally, the project was the baseline wave for the first large-scale, longitudinal study devoted to education and social inequality conducted in rural China. Results of this study contribute to an understanding of basic social stratification processes and provide insights for developing intervention strategies to improve educational access and effectiveness in rural China.

Geographic Mobility of Labor, 1962-1963 (ICPSR 7434)

This study focused on labor force mobility in the United States. Wider in scope than previous studies of local labor markets and particular categories of workers, this investigation obtained information about attitudes, motives, and the economic circumstances of families, in addition to migration history and demographic characteristics. A broad range of data were collected on the causes of mobility and obstacles to mobility, the process of mobility, and its consequences. Three waves of interviews were conducted in August-September 1962, November-December 1962, and November 1963 with national cross-section samples of the adult population. From each household, either the head or the spouse was interviewed. Special samples of people living in redevelopment areas and having recently moved were also surveyed, and a panel of respondents selected from both a cross-national sample and residents of redevelopment areas was reinterviewed in August 1963. The data collection includes three files. Part 1 contains information for all respondents, including reinterviews, organized around the family as unit of analysis. Filter variables allow a separate analysis of cross-sectional data. In Part 2 the unit of analysis is the move, with variables documenting year, geographic region and state, and reasons for the move. Part 3 provides information about the relocation of adult offspring, other than the first, aged 18-29. Demographic data include age, sex, race, marital status, income, occupation, and level of education.

The Guatemalan Survey of Family Health (EGSF) was undertaken to investigate the health of children under the age of five and women during pregnancy and childbirth residing in 60 communities within the departments (geopolitical units) of Chimaltenango, Suchitepequez, Totonicapan, and Jalapa in Guatemala. Data were collected at the household, individual, and community levels to gain an in-depth understanding of the way residents in these rural populations think about their health, treatment, and family relations.

Data at the household level (Parts 1-5, 90-92) provide information on household members, relation to household head, age, education, and language used.

The individual-level data (Parts 6-37) describe the respondent's background, marital/relationship history, social ties and social support, and economic status, along with health beliefs, a complete birth history, knowledge and use of contraception, health problems and treatment during the last two pregnancies, and anthropometry on mothers and children. Extensive data were gathered regarding the health problems and treatment for each of the two youngest children born since January 1990, with particular focus on diarrhea and respiratory infections.

The community data (Parts 41-60) supply information gathered from three knowledgeable individuals called "key informants" about occupations in the community, crops grown, wages, utilities and community services, and the history of the community. Parts 61-89 contain information regarding Health Posts (health care centers) through interviews conducted with key informants, doctors (Parts 72-80), and other health service providers (Parts 81-89), including traditional providers such as curers, midwives, and bone setters, regarding their practices, patients, referrals, fees, payment, and the use of specific treatments.

Historical Demographic Data of Southeastern Europe: Orasac, 1824-1975 (ICPSR 32404)

The data in the Historical Demographic Data of Southeastern Europe series derive primarily from the ethnographic and archival research of Joel M. Halpern, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, in southeastern Europe from 1953 to 2006. The series is comprised of historical demographic data from several towns and villages in the countries of Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia, all of which are former constituent republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The data provide insight into the shift from agricultural to industrial production, as well as the more general processes of urbanization occurring in the last days of the Yugoslav state. With an expansive timeframe ranging from 1818 to 2006, the series also contains a wide cross-section of demographic data types. These include, but are not limited to, population censuses, tax records, agricultural and landholding data, birth records, death records, marriage and engagement records, and migration information.

This component of the series focuses exclusively on the Serbian village of Orasac and is composed of 64 datasets. These data record a variety of demographic and economic information between the years of 1824 and 1975. General population information at the individual level is available in official census records from 1863, 1884, 1948, 1953, and 1961, and from population register records for the years of 1928, 1966, and 1975. Census data at the household level is also available for the years of 1863, 1928, 1948, 1953, and 1961. These data are followed by detailed records of engagement and marriage. Many of these data were obtained through the courtesy of village and county officials. Priest book records from 1851 through 1966, as well as death records from 1863 to 1976 and tombstone records from 1975, are also available. Information regarding migrants and emigrants was obtained from the village council for the years of 1946 through 1975. Lastly, the data provide economic and financial information, including records of individual landholdings (for the years of 1863, 1952, 1966, and 1975), records of government taxation at the individual or household level (for 1813 through 1840, as well as for 1952), and livestock censuses (at both the individual and household level for the years of 1824 and 1825, and only at the individual level for the years of 1833 and 1834).

This release of the 1993 Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS-1-PR) is a revised and restructured version of the Wave 1 data. This data collection provides a broad range of economic, demographic, and health information at both the household and community levels across 13 provinces on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. A sample of 7,224 households was interviewed during August 1993 through January 1994. Household-level data cover topics such as household characteristics, income, education of both adults and children, marriage histories, inter-household transfers, pregnancy history, and knowledge and use of contraceptives. At the community-facility level, information was gathered from village leaders and heads of village women's groups in each of the 321 enumeration areas (EAs) where the households were located. Questions were asked regarding community characteristics (transportation, water and sanitation, history of schools, and availability of health facilities), nurses, midwives, and paramedics (facility management and family planning history, vignettes on types of care), and traditional health practitioners (buying or making herbal medicines or using services of traditional practitioners, rituals, and incantations). When the household data are combined with the community-facility data, the 1993 Indonesian Family Life Survey provides a unique look at areas of fertility, family planning, infant and child health, education, migration, employment, and the social, economic, and health status of over 7,000 households in a diverse setting during a period of rapid demographic and socioeconomic change.

As of June 2015, there are four waves of data for the IFLS. However, a fifth wave of data collection has begun. Please see the IFLS Web site for more information on how to obtain these data.

These data explore the family relationships and social support networks of middle-aged and older persons. Information on respondents' relationships with individual family members is supplied, along with measures of many kinds of routine help given and received, and summary measures of the amount of time that others spent helping the respondent and that the respondent spent helping others. Variables cover respondent's employment status and history, employment status and history of respondent's spouse, respondent's income, number and sex of children, family composition (biological parents, step-parents, in-laws), household chores performed (cooking, cleaning, washing, shopping, driving), and assistance received with chores. Additional items relate to whether respondents helped anyone else with daily activities, and whether they were involved in church, civic, and/or other activities. Demographic information about respondents and their spouses (age, sex, education, ethnicity) is also provided.

NCHAT entered the field on September 1, 2020, and data collection completed in April 2021. A follow-up survey (Wave 2) was fielded in 2022. The Wave 1 sample includes 3,642 main respondents. The sample frame included adults in the United States who ranged in age from 20-60 years old, who were married or cohabiting, and who were able to read English or Spanish. About 1,515 partners participated. NCHAT sample participants were recruited through the Gallup Panel. About 9 percent of the sample was non-Latinx Black, 6 percent non-Latinx Asian, 5 percent non-Latinx Multirace, 16 percent Latinx, and 1 percent another racial or ethnic identity. Approximately 55 percent of the sample identified as heterosexual, 20 percent as gay or lesbian, 10 percent as bisexual, and 15 percent as another sexual identity or multiple sexual identities. The sample was about evenly split between men and women, and almost 3 percent identified as another gender identity. 27 percent of couples were the same gender, and 4 percent were non-binary. About 75 percent were married and the remainder were cohabiting. The average age was 45. 65 percent of the sample had no children. One-third of the sample was in an interracial couple. 10 percent were born outside the US. Survey, time diary, experience sampling method, and geospatial data were collected. NCHAT is uniquely suited to address COVID, stress, family functioning, and physical and mental health and includes an abundance of contextual and acute measures of race and racism, sexism, and heterosexism.

The National Family Research of Japan (NFRJ) is a series of nationwide surveys of families selected by random sampling in Japan. It is organized by the National Family Research committee of the Japan Society of Family Sociology. The aims of the NFRJ are to provide data for further improvements of family research and to contribute to the accumulation of new knowledge in Japan. The NFRJ study group aims to describe and explain the changing individual attitudes and variations of experiences in regard to life events related to changes in families, and longitudinal variations of family groups recognized by individuals. National Family Research of Japan 2008 (NFRJ 2008) is the third survey in the NFRJ series. Most of the questions in NFRJ 2008 were taken from NFRJ 1998 and NFRJ 2003. However, the wording of some questions and the available responses were altered. NFRJ 2008 had three forms of questionnaire for separate age groups: younger (28-47 years), middle-aged (48-62 years), and older (63-72 years). Opinions were collected on marital quality, work and family, parenting, parent-child relationships, siblings relationships, and division of household labor. Additional topics include respondent relationships with siblings, in-laws, and parents, employment type, work environment, and work-life balance. Demographic information includes respondent age, gender, education level, income, and marriage and employment status.

National Health Interview Survey, 2007 (ICPSR 27201)

The purpose of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is to obtain information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the kinds of health services people receive. Implementation of a redesigned NHIS, consisting of a basic module, a periodic module, and a topical module, began in 1997 (see NATIONAL HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY, 1997 [ICPSR 2954]). The 2007 NHIS contains the Household, Family, Person, Sample Adult, and Sample Child files from the basic module. Each record in Part 1, Household Level, contains data on type of living quarters, number of families in the household responding and not responding, and the month and year of the interview for each sampling unit. Part 2, Family Level, is made up of reconstructed variables from the person-level data of the basic module and includes information on sex, age, race, marital status, Hispanic origin, education, veteran status, family income, family size, major activities, health status, activity limits, and employment status, along with industry and occupation. As part of the basic module, Part 3, Person Level, provides information on all family members with respect to health status, limitation of daily activities, cognitive impairment, and health conditions. Also included are data on years at current residence, region variables, height, weight, bed days, doctor visits, hospital stays, and health care access and utilization. A randomly-selected adult in each family was interviewed for Part 4, Sample Adult, regarding respiratory conditions, use of nasal spray, renal conditions, AIDS, joint symptoms, health status, limitation of daily activities, and behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity in addition to questions regarding stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and weight control. Part 5, Sample Child, provides information from an adult in the household on medical conditions of one child in the household, such as respiratory problems, seizures, allergies, and use of special equipment like hearing aids, braces, or wheelchairs. Also included are variables regarding child behavior, the use of mental health services, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as responses to the SDQ, the Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire on child mental health. The 2007 data contain the Child Conditions - Limitation of Activity and Health Status (CHS), Child Health Care Access and Utilization (CAU), Child Mental Health Brief (CMB), Child Mental Health Services (CMS) and Child Influenza Immunization (CFI) sections. Part 6, Injury/Poison Episode, is an episode-based file that contains information about the external cause and nature of the injury or poisoning episode and what the person was doing at the time of the injury or poisoning episode, in addition to the date and place of occurrence. Part 7, Injury/Poison Episode Verbatim, contains edited narrative text descriptions of the injury or poisoning, provided by the respondent. Part 8, Adult Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and Part 9, Child Complementary and Alternative Medicine, provide information regarding the use of 17 nonconventional health care practices, including acupuncture, movement therapies, and relaxation techniques, for sample adults and sample children, respectively. Supplemental Sample Child, Part 10, and Supplemental Sample Child Alternative Medicine, Part 11, are supplemental files for the 2007 data release. These files provide dummy records to fill in the missing information for Part 5, Sample Child, and Part 9, Child Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Part 12, Paradata, does not contain health related information, but rather data which are related to the interview process, including measures of time, contact-ability, and cooperation. RAT_CAT3 Update, Part 13, corrects an error in the 2007 Family Level variable RAT_CAT3.
