Provision of Sexuality Education in Secondary Schools, Ghana, Guatemala, Kenya, and Peru, 2015 (ICPSR 38440)

This study aimed to document how existing sexuality education policies and curricula are implemented in schools in developing countries through case studies of 4 countries. These data come from ten of twelve surveys: principals, teachers and students in Ghana and Kenya, and teachers and principals in Guatemala and Peru. In each country, three regions were purposively selected to represent geographic, ethnic and cultural diversity. In each region, the research team selected a representative sample of secondary schools, for a total of 60-80 schools in each country. The surveys of principals and teachers were interviewer-administered, and elicited detailed information on the content, approach and format of teaching sexuality education in each of the sampled schools, assessment methods, teacher training, and opinions on successes and failures of the program. The survey of students was self-administered at school with detailed guidance from fieldworkers. It assessed students' knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding sexuality and reproductive health, obtained opinions on strengths and weaknesses in the curriculum and teaching, and asked for their preferences regarding content, teaching approach, format and timing of the sexuality education program.

Reproductive Health Decisions and HIV Infection Risk (ICPSR 35945)

A randomly-selected cohort of HIV discordant (N=960), concordant-negative (subset of N=960) and concordant-positive (N=480) couples is followed in Nyando district, western Kenya. Every six months for two years, participants are tested for HIV using rapid HIV assays, rapid urine pregnancy tests are conducted, and they complete audio computer-assisted self interviews. This project also collects dyad interviews (N=30) and 12 focus group discussions (among HIV-negative males, HIV-negative females, HIV-positive males, HIV-positive females), conducted at baseline and at month 18.

This annual survey, fielded June to December 2004, was conducted in over 50 countries to solicit public opinion on social and political issues. Respondents were asked what they thought was the most important goal for the world as a whole, whether they trusted people from their ethnic group more than people from other ethnic groups, if they heard about various global institutions, and their thoughts of these institutions. They were also asked for their overall opinion of various countries. Respondents were asked to give their opinion on other issues such as globalization, terrorism, and democracy. They were also asked questions concerning the United States. These included whether they think American foreign policy has a positive effect or negative effect on their country, whether the United States plays a positive, negative, or neutral role in the growth of the world economy, the role the United States plays in keeping peace in the world, the role the United States plays in the fight against poverty in the world, and the role the United States plays in the protection of the environment. Additional questions addressed respondents' thoughts on whether their country was governed by the will of the people and whether elections were free and fair. Demographic information includes sex, age, education level, employment status, religious preference, household income, and type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural).

Women Empowerment and Child Health in Developing Countries - Continuation 2 (ICPSR 35890)

The project takes advantage of two unique randomized experiments to study the impact of education on early fertility and child health in Sub-Saharan Africa (specifically Kenya and Ghana). It collects detailed data on students several years after an initial intervention. In Ghana, the study cohort is followed yearly and detailed interviews are collected in 2012, 2015 and 2018. Datasets contain information on attitudes, cognitive and noncognitive skills, and preferences.
