Using AI with MIDUS, NSHAP, Add Health and Other NACDA-hosted Data

By ICPSR Staff

Are you planning to use AI or LLMs with data you downloaded from NACDA?

If so – read this first!

Before you make plans for your next research project, if you are planning to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Large Language Models (LLMs), make sure to read ICPSR’s policy about the use of LLMs – this applies to any data obtained from the NACDA site.

Some of the data producers of our most cited longitudinal series about aging populations have provided their own policies about using AI with the data they created – these policies align with ICPSR’s existing terms of use for most public data and the AI policy noted above.  Read below to find out more.

MIDUS

The MIDUS Conditions of Use were updated on March 16, 2026.
By downloading public use data files, users agree to NOT upload MIDUS data to a public large language model or AI platforms including but not limited to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and other similar systems that process data externally and do not guarantee data confidentiality or non-retention.
By using MIDUS data, you acknowledge and agree to comply with the Conditions of Use.

NSHAP

Visit the NSHAP project site to read the AI policy in a PDF.

Uploading NSHAP data to public (Type 1) large language models (LLMs) or AI platforms is prohibited. Public LLMs and AI platforms retain data provided by the user and can be used for any purpose, including training the platforms. Thus, uploading data to these tools constitutes redistribution and is not allowed. These AI tools include, but are not limited to, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and other similar systems because they process data externally and do not guarantee data confidentiality or non-retention.

Currently, requests to upload the public-use (not restricted) version of NSHAP data to Type 2 LLMs (ones licensed by an institution that do not permit the retention of user-provided data[e.g. the University of Michigan’s U-M Maizey or Johns Hopkins University’s HopGPT]) will be considered on a case-by-case basis for approval. Please contact NACDA to request permission, icpsr-nacda@umich.edu.

Similarly, requests to upload NSHAP data, public-use or restricted, to Type 3 LLMs (ones not connected to the internet, isolated to individual machines or within secure networks) will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Again, please contact NACDA to request permission, icpsr-nacda@umich.edu.

By using NSHAP data, you agree to the conditions of use.

Add Health

All users of Add Health public-use data agree to abide by the restrictions listed in the Conditions of Use page, including the prohibitions on the use of Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models.
