DSDR is excited to announce the release of Provision of Sexuality Education in Secondary Schools, Ghana, Guatemala, Kenya, and Peru, 2015 (ICPSR 38440).

The Provision of Sexuality Education study aimed to document how existing sexuality education policies and curricula are implemented in schools in developing countries through case studies of four countries. In Ghana and Kenya, principals, teachers, and students were surveyed. In Guatemala and Peru, only principals and teachers were surveyed. For each country, three regions were deliberately selected to represent geographic, ethnic, and cultural diversity. Within each region, a representative sample of 60 to 80 secondary schools were chosen.

Surveys of the principals and teachers were interviewer-administered, and asked about the content, approach, and format of teaching sexuality education in the school, assessment methods, teacher training, and opinions on the successes and failures of the program(s). Students, ages 15-17, took a self-administered survey at school with detailed guidance from fieldworkers.  It assessed the students’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding sexuality and reproductive health, obtained opinions on strengths and weaknesses in the curriculum and teaching, and asked for their preferences regarding content, teaching approach, format, and timing of the sexuality education program.

For each survey, there is a public and a complementary restricted dataset.
