Diversity Scholarship
We are no longer accepting scholarship applications for the 2024 ICPSR Summer Program. Please check back in early January 2025 for information on how to apply for a 2025 ICPSR scholarship.
With support from the University of Michigan, ICPSR has created a scholarship to promote quantitative training among incoming and returning graduate students from underrepresented groups in any discipline.
There are two purposes to this scholarship:
- To help incoming graduate students develop and enhance their quantitative skills in order to better prepare them for their subsequent course work and professional careers. With regard to this purpose, priority will be given to incoming students enrolling at universities in the state of Michigan.
- To enable currently enrolled graduate students at any institution within the United States to acquire additional preparation in quantitative analysis with the objective of improving their academic performance and optimizing their professional advancement. With regard to this purpose, there is no geographical preference for applicants.
The Diversity Scholarship is a waiver of registration fees to attend a single session (either the First Session or the Second Session) in the General Sessions of the ICPSR Summer Program. Recipients of the Diversity Scholarship will also receive free on-campus housing (in a University of Michigan student dorm), on-campus meals, and a stipend. Recipients of the Diversity Scholarship will be expected to attend their courses in-person in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Applicants must be enrolled in universities based in the United States. Applicants must also meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Come from an educational, cultural, or geographic background that is underrepresented in graduate study in their discipline in the United States;
- Have demonstrated a sustained commitment to diversity in the academic, professional, or civic realm through their work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of student or community organizations. By commitment to diversity, we mean efforts in the U.S. to reduce social, educational or economic disparities based on race, ethnicity or gender, or to improve race relations in the U.S.;
- Have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances;
- Are first-generation U.S. citizens or are the first generation in their families to graduate from a four-year college.
The following application materials are required:
- A current curriculum vitae
- A cover letter describing your research interests and how participation in the ICPSR Summer Program will contribute toward the completion of your degree. You must specify which session (First or Second) you would like to attend and which course(s) you would like to take. The cover letter should also address which of the four diversity criteria above apply to your personal circumstances. Finally, please indicate if familial or other personal or professional obligations would prevent you from attending your courses in-person.
- One letter of recommendation from faculty.
