CBII FAQs | VDE connection issues while working in R studio with large data files
When using R Studio to work in the VDE, researchers should think about utilizing only those variables needed for calculations and analyses and not all available data for CBII institutions. While aggregating large-scale data is one strategy to lighten the memory load of working with the data, consider segmenting processes off into additional smaller steps that can then be combined to create smaller, complete datasets needed for analyses. Attempting to link all available data for an institution or across the multiple CBII datasets can result in slow processing, and in some instances with the largest datasets can freeze the VDE and prevent researchers from shutting down R Studio, stopping processes, or logging out altogether. If this occurs, please email ICPSR-help@umich.edu to have your VDE session ended and connection reset.
