Summary View help for Summary
This study provides the restricted-use datasets for the race/ethnicity variables included in the Monitoring the Future surveys through 2005: one for BX (8th/10th grades) for the years 1991-2005, and one for BY (12th grade) for the years 1976-2005.
Details of the change in the race/ethnicity questions have been documented in all restricted-use data codebooks/user's guides since 2019, and MTF includes the information in the documentation for this study also. The study team recommends reviewing the documentation included with this study to understand the changes over time. Instructions for merging restricted-use data files with other restricted-use files and with the public-use data files can be found in the restricted-use data documentation beginning in 2019.

ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
