This special topic poll queried residents in the state of New Jersey on topics such as crime, taxes, and schools. Those surveyed were asked to rate New Jersey and their own towns as places to live and to assess race relations in their communities. Questions covered specific aspects of the respondents' lives such as dining out, shopping in a mall, reading books, exercising, renting movie videos, going out to movies, drinking alcoholic beverages, and playing the lottery. Respondents were also asked if they owned items such as cellular phones, personal computers, pets, foreign cars, stocks and mutual funds, musical instruments, library cards, barbecue grills, and electronic pagers. Background information on respondents includes voter registration status, household composition, vote choice in the 1992 presidential election, political party, political orientation, education, age, sex, race, religious preference, and family income.

(1) ICPSR created a codebook appendix to clarify codes for some standard variables. (2) A weight variable has been included and must be used for any analysis. (3) The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

A variation of random-digit dialing using primary sampling units (PSUs) was employed, consisting of blocks of 100 telephone numbers identical through the eighth digit and stratified by geographic region, area code, and size of place. Within households, respondents were selected using a method developed by Leslie Kish and modified by Charles Backstrom and Gerald Hursh (see Backstrom and Hursh, SURVEY RESEARCH [Evanston, IL: Northwestern University Press, 1963]).

1996-11-21 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
