DMACS

The Detroit Metro Area Communities Study (DMACS) is a panel survey of Detroit residents aged 18 and older. The original panel of respondents was drawn from an address-based probability sample of all occupied Detroit households in 2016 and has since been refreshed through additional address-based sampling annually. The 15th survey wave, collected between June 16, 2022 and August 26, 2022, invited 2,687 previously enrolled panelists to participate in a self-administered or interviewer-administered survey. Topics include neighborhood perceptions, surveillance technology, economic hardship, entrepreneurship, employment, COVID-19 vaccination, plasma donation, policy priorities, attitudes towards reparations, housing, as well as crime, safety and policing.

The Detroit Metro Area Communities Study (DMACS) is a University of Michigan initiative designed to regularly survey a broad, representative group of Detroit residents about their communities, including their expectations, perceptions, priorities, and aspirations. Since 2016, University of Michigan's Detroit Metro Area Communities Study has used a city-wide survey to help bridge the gap between Detroit officials and residents whose voices may not always be heard in public discussions.

The original panel of respondents was drawn from an address-based probability sample of all occupied Detroit households, which has been refreshed through additional address-based sampling in subsequent years. Surveys were self-administered online or were interviewer-administered via telephone. All respondents who completed the survey received an incentive via mail from the University of Michigan. The data collection period for this survey was June 16, 2022 to August 26, 2022. On June 16, as part of a soft launch, invitations were sent by email and text to 100 established panelists who had completed previous DMACS surveys early in the field period. A second batch of texts and emails were sent to an additional 100 panelists on June 17. All remaining established panelists who had previously provided email or texting contact information were sent an invitation via email and text as part of a full launch on June 22, 2022.

The questionnaire was developed by the DMACS team. The instrument was programmed and tested by DMACS staff members on mobile and desktop devices to identify issues with question language and ensure the accuracy of skip-pattern logic, randomizations, and other programming issues. The questionnaire was programmed in Qualtrics by DMACS staff and translated into Spanish by CETRA Language Solutions. Respondents were able to select between taking the survey in English or Spanish.

The target population for the survey were Detroiters ages 18 and older. Wave 15 is based on a stratified random sample. Researchers invited 9,487 households to participate: 2,687 previously enrolled panelists from earlier waves and 6,800 households from a stratified address-based sample. For Wave 15 households from census block groups whose populations were at least 50% Hispanic were oversampled. A total of 2,332 Detroit residents completed the survey.

Longitudinal: Panel

Individual

A total of 2,332 Detroit residents completed the survey, yielding an overall response rate of 27% (using AAPOR Response Rate 1); 67.2% for existing panelists and 9.3% for new panelists.

ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Performed recodes and/or calculated derived variables.
