DMACS

The Detroit Metro Area Communities Study (DMACS) is a panel survey of Detroit residents launched in 2016. The original panel of respondents was drawn from an address-based probability sample of all occupied Detroit households. In subsequent years, the panel has been refreshed through additional address-based sampling. The 12th survey wave, collected between January 6, 2021 and March 5, 2021 included a sample refresh using multiple recruitment modes (mail, email, text, and phone). The researchers sent a total of 11,655 invitations to the survey: 1,766 to existing DMACS panelists who had already responded to at least one prior survey and 9,889 to residents of a randomly-selected address-based refreshment sample of Detroit households. This refreshment included an oversample of households in Census block groups that were at least 70% Hispanic and households in Strategic Neighborhood Fund (SNF) neighborhoods. Surveys were self-administered online or interviewer-administered via telephone. Adaptive design was used to increase response rates amongst hard-to-reach subgroups. The researchers report results for the 2,238 Detroit residents who completed the survey. The researchers obtained an overall response rate of 20.22% (using American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) Response Rate 1); 72.6% for existing panelists and 10.4% for new panelists.

The purpose of this study is to engage residents and stakeholders in informing the city's future by involving stakeholders in the prioritization, collection and dissemination of public opinion information that supports more meaningful and effective community development investments in and around Detroit.

The original panel of respondents was drawn from an address-based probability sample of all occupied Detroit households, which has been refreshed through additional address-based sampling in subsequent years. The 12th survey wave, collected between January 6, 2021 and March 5, 2021 included a sample refresh using multiple recruitment modes (mail, email, text, and phone). The researchers sent a total of 11,655 invitations to the survey: 1,766 to existing Detroit Metro Area Communities Study panelists who had already responded to at least one prior survey and 9,889 to residents of a randomly-selected address-based refreshment sample of Detroit households. Surveys were self-administered online or interviewer-administered via telephone. Adaptive design was used to increase response rates amongst hard-to-reach subgroups.

The overall target population for this survey was Detroiters ages 18 and older. Wave 12 is based on a stratified random sample. The sample had two components:

  1. 1,766 individuals who had responded to at least one previous Detroit Metro Area Communities Study (DMACS) survey.
  2. A refreshment sample of 9,889 household addresses. Households were selected at random from 13 different sampling strata. The first 11 strata were derived from Detroit's Strategic Neighborhood Fund (SNF) neighborhood boundaries. Each SNF neighborhood was treated as one stratum with the exception of Southwest/Vernor. Southwest/Vernor was divided into two strata with block groups in this neighborhood that were more than 70% Hispanic, based on American Community Survey (ACS) estimates comprising one stratum and block groups in this neighborhood that are less than 70% Hispanic comprising another stratum. Likewise, non-SNF neighborhoods were divided into two strata: block groups that were 70% or more Hispanic and block groups that were less than 70% Hispanic. Within each strata, households were sampled at random, without replacement, from an address list purchased from USA Data. Each newly sampled household was sent an invitation by mail with the instruction that one household resident over the age of 18 was to take the survey.

DMACS sought at least 70 new respondents in each of the 12 strata listed in Table 1 that cover (a) SNF neighborhoods and (b) block groups that are 70% or more Hispanic. In addition, DMACS sought 1260 new respondents in other parts of Detroit (as represented by the last stratum in Table 1), yielding a total target of 2,100 new respondents (across all 13 strata). Based on response rates to prior DMACS surveys, the team projected a response rate of 35% among established panelists and 15% among new participants (Table 1).

2023-01-16 The data collection was updated in order to include a geographic variable, GEOID10. The public-use data was updated in an effort to reduce disclosure risk with the inclusion of a CASEID variable and the masking of other variables, such as the subject ID (SID). A restricted-use data file was added to the collection for data users wishing to access the variables that were masked in the public-use file.

2022-01-31 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Performed recodes and/or calculated derived variables.

The DMACS Wave 12 data were weighted to reflect the demographics of the City of Detroit. This data includes a weighting variable, WAVE12_WEIGHT, which should be used when conducting analysis. For more weighting information, please see the P.I. Panel and Methodology documents.
