The Reichstag Biographical and Roll-Call Data includes coded biographical data for each deputy (Abgeordneter) for each session of the Reichstag during the defined voting period. It also includes a record of the vote of each deputy for every roll-call vote recorded in the official Reichstag stenographic record (Stengraphische Berichte). Biographical data was collected from the official handbooks of each session.

There are 9 datasets for the 9 Reichstag sessions that were held between 1867 and 1890. In addition to voting record, deputy demographic information includes political affiliation, religion, year of birth and death, education, and military service.

The purpose of the study is to document biographical data for each Reichstag deputy (Abgeordneter) during the study collection time frames (1867-1890).

Data was collected in Germany via publicly available official handbooks in the mid-1970's. The data was originally encoded using punched cards for processing, and was later transferred to a machine-readable format.

Cross-sectional

Reichstag deputies present during roll-call voting between 1867 and 1890.

Individual

If more than one vote was taken on a single day, the sequence is indicated by a hyphenated number after the date, e.g. VOTE104,26 MARCH 1867-1 and VOTE105,26 MARCH 1867-2.

Data on roll-call votes were collected in chronological order with one exception, VOTE742 through VOTE746 in the seventh session, but labeling consistency is maintained. This should not cause issues with analysis, but users should be aware.

In an attempt to deal with missing data due to deputy absence, there is a corresponding SVOTEsnn field for every VOTEsnn field. The data might be useful for confirmatory analysis regarding VOTEsnn fields, but should not be relied upon for any published results.
