This study is a pilot for adopting the electroencephalogram (EEG) extension of the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) as a way to organize neuroimaging and behavioral data. The EEG data were collected as a part of a larger project on the effects of schooling on children's abilities to control their thoughts and behaviors. The sample includes EEG and survey data. The public-use data files have masked responses for the variables describing race, ethnicity, parent education details, and family education details in the participant survey. The restricted-use files have all variables available.

Access to these data is restricted. The three variables masked in the public-use survey data contain race/ethnicity information as well as degree descriptions associated with parent and family education. If users are interested in obtaining these data, they must complete a Restricted Data Use Agreement, specify the reason for the request, and obtain IRB approval or notice of exemption for their research.

The overarching goal of this project was to investigate the associations between socioeconomic adversity, classroom auditory environments, and the development of neural mechanisms of distractor suppression in kindergarten.

This multi-method project recruited participants from public schools in Michigan, United States. The electroencephalogram (EEG) data were acquired using a BioSemi Active Two 32+8 system using Ag/AgCl electrode caps suitable for young children. The EEG task was an adaptation of a common cognitive task, known as the Go/No-Go paradigm. Survey data was collected on child age, sex, and standardized academic performance.

The sample included students in Michigan public schools for which the principals gave approval for their school to participate.

Cross-sectional

Children who attend public kindergarten classrooms in Michigan.

Individual

Variables in Datasets 1 and 2 primarily include demographic data and parent educational data, as well as three variables describing the EEG collection. In Dataset 1, many values are masked.

There were 29 students who participated in the selective attention task. From those children, 24 EEG files are available for further processing and analysis.
