ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created online analysis version with question text.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.

Summary View help for Summary
The National Surveys on Energy and Environment (NSEE), a core activity in CLOSUP's Energy and Environmental Policy Initiative, reflects a formal partnership between the Muhlenberg Institute of Public Opinion at Muhlenberg College and the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy at the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. The National Surveys on Energy and Environment (NSEE) include twice per year national opinion surveys on issues directly related to climate change and energy policy, as well as other surveys conducted on a range of topics such as hydraulic fracturing ("fracking"), the Great Lakes, and wider issues of energy and the environment. From 2008-2012 the survey was called the "National Survey of American Public Opinion on Climate Change" (NSAPOCC); starting in 2013 the survey was renamed to the "National Surveys on Energy and Environment" (NSEE). This dataset includes data from two waves, the first (Fall 2008) and the most recent (Fall 2015). The Fall 2008 survey included longitudinal questions about belief in climate change, plus additional content related to the role of religion in environmental issues, support for state and/or federal policies to address climate change, and more. The Fall 2015 survey included longitudinal questions about belief in climate change, plus additional content related to the Clean Power Plan, Pope Francis' encyclical and the role of religion in environmental issues, and more. Demographic variables include age, years of education completed, income, political affiliation, religious affiliation, gender, and race.

Rather than using variable names based on question number, the NSEE datasets use a longitudinal variable naming scheme to facilitate longitudinal analysis. Many questions have been asked in multiple waves of the NSEE, making it a valuable source of longitudinal public-opinion data on climate change and energy policy. Variable names include two parts: a subject category for the question, and a description of the contents of the question. When a question has been asked with the same text and response options over multiple waves, the same variable name will be used in each dataset. Where there have been slight changes in question wording, the variable name will include a version number (v1, v2, etc., appended to the variable name). In the longitudinal dataset, longitudinal questions pertaining to global warming belief appear first (alphabetized within the section), demographic questions (in alphabetical order) appear last, and all other questions are listed in alphabetical order. Data users should consult the data collection instruments for the order in which questions were asked in a particular wave.

NSEE surveys include twice per year national opinion surveys on issues directly related to climate change and energy policy, as well as other surveys conducted on a range of topics such as hydraulic fracturing ("fracking"), the Great Lakes, and wider issues of energy and environment.
This study includes data from the National Surveys on Energy and Environment that were administered in Fall 2008 and Fall 2015. A total of 603 adult respondents completed the Fall 2008 telephone survey, which was conducted by the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion in Allentown, Pennsylvania. A total of 911 adult respondents completed the Fall 2015 telephone survey. Fall 2015 respondents were interviewed in English on both landlines and cell phones by the staff of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion (MCIPO) in Allentown, Pennsylvania on the Institute's Computer Aided Telephone Interviewing (CATI) system.
Sample View help for Sample
The Fall 2008 results are based on a telephone survey of 603 adult (age 18 or older) residents of the United States between September 8 and September 24, 2008. The Fall 2015 results are based on a telephone survey of 911 adult (age 18 or older) residents of the United States between September 2 and September 24, 2015. Respondents were interviewed in English on both landlines (353) and cell phones (558) by the staff of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion (MCIPO) in Allentown, Pennsylvania on the Institute's Computer Aided Telephone Interviewing (CATI) system. Of the 558 cell phone respondents, 428 had no landlines in their household. Both the landline and cell phone samples were provided by the Marketing Systems Group (MSG), Horsham, Pennsylvania. Both landline and cell phones were chosen randomly from sampling frames of United States landline and cell numbers provided by MSG. For more information regarding Sampling, please see the Original P.I. Documentation in the ICPSR Codebook.

Weight View help for Weight
The data are not weighted, however, this collection contains the variable WEIGHT (Overall Weight) that should be used in any analysis. The NSEE data can also be weighted by variables AGEWEIGHT (Age Weight), EDWEIGHT (Education Weight), GENWEIGHT (Gender Weight), and RACEWEIGHT (Race Weight); these specific weights are only provided for the Fall 2008 data for informational purposes.
