The primary purpose of this project was to compile a directory of all main public libraries in the United States. Significant variables include name, address, population served, and the name of the chief state library officer. Branches of the main public libraries were not included in this survey.

2002-03-29 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data.
