The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. Data are available for both public and private two-year and four-year institutions. The HEGIS Institutional Characteristics component for 1970-1971 sought data on basic characteristics from institutions of higher education. The data cover information on name, address, and telephone number of the institution as well as information about accreditations, state and city demographics, calendar system, program types, enrollment figures, admissions requirements, and administrative officers.

The original data received from NCES was a hierarchical data file with multiple records per case. The data have been reformatted into a rectangular file with one record per case in order to be compatible with the current statistical software packages.

2005-09-12 The data have been reformatted into a rectangular file with one record per case. An ICPSR codebook, SAS, SPSS, and Stata setup files have been added to the study.
1998-12-07 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
