Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) Annual Survey of U.S. Economics Departments, United States, 1994-2020 (ICPSR 37118)

Released/updated on: 2021-11-23
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2006-01-01--2020-12-31, 1994-01-01--2020-12-31

This data release is based on a survey of Ph.D. and non-Ph.D. granting U.S. economics departments for the years 1994-2020 and 2006-2020, respectively. The primary source of data is the annual Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) surveys. CSWEP is a committee of the American Economic Association (AEA). These data are supplemented with data from the AEA's Universal Academic Questionnaire (UAQ) information when CSWEP data observations are missing for a given institution and year. Observations that are missing in both CSWEP and UAQ surveys are imputed using linear interpolation.

This study includes variables on the number and composition of faculty, the number of undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students, and job placement status for Ph.D. graduates. Many of these variables are reported by gender.

CSWEP has undertaken the collection of data on gender composition of faculty and students in both Ph.D. granting and non-Ph.D. granting U.S. economics departments since 1972.

This data collection describes the number of institutional faculty and staff in postsecondary institutions of the United States by occupational activity, full- and part-time status, sex, and race/ethnicity. Beginning in 1993, this survey, conducted in odd-numbered years, replaces the EEO-6 survey administered by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Part 1 (Part D from IPEDS-S) provides institutional characteristics, such as state, region, and locale codes, and name of institution. Part 2 includes Parts A, B, C, E, and F of the Survey (IPEDS-S). Part 3 contains data collected by the IPEDS-CN Survey. The survey was sent to all higher education institutions and all other schools offering a baccalaureate degree or higher. In addition, staff data were collected from the remaining institutions via the consolidated form (IPEDS-CN). Information from the IPEDS-S form includes the distribution of full- and part-time staff by primary occupation, sex, and race/ethnicity, full-time faculty by academic rank and tenure, full-time new hires by sex and race/ethnicity, and contracted and donated services (E) (such as executive/administrative, faculty, technical and paraprofessionals, or clerical and secretarial) by occupational activity. Teaching Faculty in Academe, 1972-1973 (ICPSR 7914)

Released/updated on: 1992-02-16
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1972-01-01--1973-01-01
This study is a replication of a part of the 1968-1969 survey of college and university faculty conducted by the American Council of Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. In order to reflect the many significant changes in American education since the initial study, this reassessment was undertaken during the 1972-1973 academic year. Included in the sample were teaching faculty from 78 universities, 181 four-year colleges, and 42 junior or community colleges, with faculty size ranging from fewer than 20 to approximately 4,500. The data collection includes information on the faculty surveyed, such as work history, number and type of academic degrees, description of current position (e.g., tenure status, hours per week spent teaching, current funders for scholarly work, and number of graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in current courses), work roles (e.g., department chairmanships, faculty-wide appointments, and professional activities, such as consulting work, works published, and memberships in professional associations), current practices and teaching goals, and opinions and attitudes about many aspects of academia (e.g., federal aid for college students, minority hiring practices, and current working conditions). Additional information includes each respondent's single most outstanding professional accomplishment or achievement. Demographic data include age, education, employment, gender, income, race, and marital status.
