ICPSR Annual Report: FY24 in Review

The Consortium had an impactful fiscal year, continuing to introduce new tools to guide NIH researchers through a changing data landscape. Revamped study pages enhanced data navigation, and resources for Pride Month were prominently featured. A new dataset provided insights into the effects of redlining through national mortgage data.

ICPSR's Michael Traugott received the 2024 Warren J. Mitofsky Award, we celebrated the recipient of the 2024 ICPSR Innovator Award, and a new metadata documentation portal was introduced. Community engagement included events like the PAA reception, and new council members began their terms.

The ICPSR community mourned the passing of Katherine K. Wallman and celebrated Kaye Marz's retirement. A Nobel winner used ICPSR data to understand wage inequality in the US, highlighting ICPSR's substantial impact.

ICPSR facilitated researcher access to Meta’s API products and entered a new era celebrating student data users. The recipients of the 2023 Flanigan, Miller, and Simmons Awards were announced, and the ICPSR Bulletin featured new social media data from the US 2020 election and upcoming events.

Finally, ICPSR made data from the 2020 Presidential Election Facebook and Instagram Study available, and J. Trent Alexander received an honor from the U-M Office of the Vice President for Research.

Financial Report

ICPSR closed fiscal year 2024 with revenues totaling $27.4 million, representing a 5-percent increase from fiscal year 2023's total. Membership income increased 4.7% percent from fiscal year 2023 at $4.7 million and contributed 17 percent of the organization's total revenue.  Sponsored project awards contributed $20.0 million and accounted for 73 percent of ICPSR's revenue.  Summer Program revenue was $1.9 million for fiscal year 2024. ICPSR's overall expenses were $27.3 million, a 2.8 percent increase from fiscal year 2023. The organization closed fiscal year 2024 with an operating surplus of $932 thousand. As of June 30, 2024, ICPSR maintained a total fund balance of $10,166,701.

Summer Program

The 2024 ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research had another successful run.

• 100+ courses
• 1041 participants representing 75 countries
• 55 teaching assistants
• 54 ICPSR scholarships 
• 36 diversity scholarships, totaling $180,000 in support
• 14 scholarships were awarded this year specifically by ISR and the University of Michigan Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE) to students, faculty, researchers, and scholars currently affiliated with a Ukrainian academic, research, or scholarly institution, with the aim of supporting academic research and quantitative methods training for those currently in Ukraine and those who have been recently displaced from Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion and ongoing war.
