The Chitwan Valley [Nepal] Family Study: Labor Outmigration, Agricultural Productivity and Food Security is a three year project with the aim to investigate the consequences of labor outmigration on agricultural productivity in a poor agricultural country persistently facing food security problems. A Data Guide for this study is available as a webpage and for download.
This project's data collection is made up of twenty-five datasets:
Datasets 1-6: The Household Agriculture and Migration Survey includes information on household agricultural practices and remittances received by the household. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect data from household members who previously participated in the Chitwan Valley Family Study (ICPSR 4538).
Topics of the survey include crop production and farm technology use, wealth, assets, income, consumption, food security and information about each household member currently away from home. The survey also collected information on gender, ethnicity, and age.
Datasets 7-16: Measured yields of major crops grown by farm households that previously participated in the Chitwan Valley Family Study (ICPSR 4538).
Dataset 17: A monthly demographic event registry administered to all households that previously participated in the Chitwan Valley Family Study (ICPSR 4538).
Datasets 18-23: The Women's Time Use Survey was designed and administered to married, Nepalese women to collect information on changes in their time and involvement in agriculture and other activities. Face-to-face interviews and telephone interviews were conducted to collect data from women who previously participated in the Chitwan Valley Family Study (ICPSR 4538).
The collection covered a range of topics including farm work, hygiene, finances, health, and religion. Further, respondents were queried concerning socialization and assisting children and the elderly.
Datasets 24-25: The Women's Time Use Survey was designed and administered to married, Nepalese women to collect information on changes in their time and involvement in agriculture and other activities. Face-to-face interviews and telephone interviews were conducted to collect data from women who previously participated in the Chitwan Valley Family Study (ICPSR 4538).

Study Purpose View help for Study Purpose
The purpose was to investigate the consequences of labour outmigration on agricultural productivity in a poor agricultural country persistently facing food security problems. We aim to answer three high-priority scientific and policy questions: To what extent (a) Does labour outmigration influence (i) agricultural productivity, (ii) women's participation in farming, and (iii) exit from farming? (b) Do remittances influence (i) farm technology use, (ii) women's participation in farming, and (iii) exit from farming? (c) Do farm technology use and exit from farming influence subsequent outmigration?
The proposed project aims to better understand the relationship between labour outmigration and agriculture, providing crucial information for scientific and policy development of food security concerns.

Dataset 1: Using the Chitwan Valley Family Study (CVFS) surveys and national surveys (Demographic Health Survey and Nepal Living Standard Survey), this survey was designed as a 43-minute Household Agriculture and Migration Survey. This survey includes information on household agricultural practices, including crop production and farm technology use, wealth, assets, income, consumption, food security and information about each household member currently away from home, and remittances received by the household. In addition, an Agriculture and Remittance Calendar was designed to collect retrospective data on farming/non-farming status, crop production, land under cultivation, farm technology use, and migration and remittances from 2006 through July 2015 matching with the agricultural production data collection in 2006. This draft survey was pre-tested in 50 households before data collection was launched.
The first wave of the survey was administered to 2,255 households residing within 151 CVFS sample neighborhoods July 15, 2015 through December 20, 2015. These data are part of the Labour Outmigration, Agricultural Productivity and Food Security project data collection, which also includes the Women's Time Use Survey data. Households that participated include the women surveyed in the related data collection. Data from additional waves of the Household Agriculture and Migration Survey will be deposited after data collection is completed.
Datasets 2-6: Seasonal Agriculture Survey Data from five additional waves of the Household Agriculture and Migration Survey.
Dataset 7-16: To create measures of agricultural productivity, the survey measured yields of major crops grown by farm households. The measures were collected across two seasons in 2015-2017 for lentil, maize, mustard, rice and wheat.
Dataset 17: A monthly demographic event registry was administered to all households residing within the 151 CVFS sample neighborhoods from March 2015 through January 2017. The registry monitored outmigration, births, deaths, marriages, and other population events.
Dataset 18: A merged data file containing all five waves of the Women's Time Use Survey data (Dataset 19-23) was created.
Dataset 19-23: A 16 minute Women's Participation in Farming Survey was designed and administered to women from farm households to collect information on changes in their time and involvement in agriculture and other activities. Survey instruments were used from the International Food Policy Research Institute's modules for the Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index and Nepal Living Standard Survey (NLSS) as a basis for the Women's Participation in Farming Survey. The instrument was pre-tested to 50 women before finalizing survey content. The Women's Time Use Survey instrument was designed in calendar format to assess the number of hours worked in various household (farming and non-farming) activities in the past 24 hours and the number of days worked in each activity in the past month.
Datasets 24-25: These data are the restricted-use version of Dataset 1, which only includes the public-use calendar data. The restricted-use contains both the survey and calendar data.
