Once my restricted data application for SOMAR data has been approved, how do I gain access to the data?
The process for gaining access depends on the type of data you’ve been approved for. The access method (Controlled Download or SOMAR VDE) is listed in the metadata for each SOMAR dataset.
A. Controlled Download Data
Once approved, SOMAR staff will send you a secure link to download the dataset. You may use these data within your own computing environment.
B. Virtual Data Enclave (VDE)
If you’re approved for VDE data, access is provided within SOMAR’s secure Virtual Data Enclave (VDE). The restricted data files cannot be moved from the VDE to your personal computer, and data exports are strictly regulated. Before access, you must complete all required onboarding steps as part of your application:
- Submit any necessary documentation, such as IRB or Ethics Committee review, CVs or resumes, and a Restricted Data Use Agreement.
- Complete VDE onboarding and training as specified in the SOMAR application (you’ll be asked to review training materials and pass a short quiz).
Once all requirements are verified, SOMAR staff will contact you with instructions to activate your VDE login and begin your research in the SOMAR VDE.
