Education and Training Resources

SOMAR provides educational and training resources on using our archive and social media data. This page will be updated as presentations and resources are released.

Programs offered by SOMAR include the following:

  • Workshops in ICPSR’s Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research on data preparation, legal and technical issues associated with data sharing, and analysis and use of data collections in the SOMAR archive
  • Conference short courses to facilitate data sharing and data reuse
  • Online technical training and user support for data depositors and data users

ICWSM 2023 Tutorial

See materials from our tutorial at the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM)

This hands-on tutorial will walk participants through the data lifecycle of a social media data research project. Participants will learn how to collect data from Twitter and Mastodon using the twarc2 command line tool and the Mastodon API. We will discuss different methods of programmatic data access and how to share social media data using the Social Media Archive at ICPSR. After completing this tutorial, participants will be able to collect or reuse social media data in their own projects and share that data with others to verify, reproduce, and extend their work.
