How to Deposit BJS-Sponsored Data

All datasets sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) are deposited in the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) via an established internal process. BJS Analysts and Project Contractors transfer data and documentation to NACJD using an internal, secure file-sharing system.

Submission Guidelines

Before submitting files, please refer to the Guidelines for OJP Analysts, Program Officers, and Contractors (PDF) for detailed instructions. NACJD strongly recommends completing the NACJD-BJS Data Transfer Form (found on page 4 of 4 in the Guidelines PDF) and including it with your submission. The form collects key information, including data collection details, deposit characteristics, study prioritization and target release dates, and release authorization.

Many BJS data collections archived by NACJD are part of established series. For these, please specify if there are significant changes compared to the latest data archived in the series.

Coordinating New, Nonstandard, or Irregular Submissions

For new, nonstandard, or infrequently submitted data collections, or when a series undergoes changes, NACJD typically coordinates with BJS staff by email or in a kickoff meeting. Coordination covers study characteristics and considerations, the data curation process, timeline planning, access levels and modalities, disclosure risk reviews and remediation, and data and publication release details.
