Detroit Area Study, 1961: Work Group Influence and Political Participation (ICPSR 7285)

This study presents data collected as part of the 1960-1961 Detroit Area Study from 419 workers who were members of the United Auto Workers union. Respondents were asked how long they had worked on their jobs, what their job duties were, and whether they were satisfied with their jobs. Another set of questions covered length of union membership, union activity, their conceptions of what the role of their union should be, and their satisfaction with the job their union was doing. Political questions covered the good and bad points of political parties, the Kennedy-Nixon debates, the political issues facing the nation, party identification, past and present vote in state and national elections, and political participation. The social structure of the work group was probed, and respondents were questioned about the importance of politics in work group relationships. Demographic variables included social class, age, organizational membership, religion, education, occupation, income, and race.

Social Composition of Detroit, 1880-1900 (ICPSR 8200)

This data collection consists of detailed examinations of various facets of life in Detroit in the years from 1880 through 1900. Data from 13 different primary sources (such as the manuscript censuses) were collected to analyze the effect that technological innovation and the environmental change that went with it had on the American social structure. Detroit is seen as a city that experienced all the problems of industrialization, as well as the advantages. It had a diverse ethnic population and grew rapidly in the years from 1880-1900. In addition to 1880 and 1900 census information, the study variables elicit information pertaining to the lifestyles, work experiences, and nationalities of people employed in various trades, including furniture making, railroad work, and vehicle manufacturing. The files on land use in 1880 and 1900 contain information on the number, type, and use of buildings in a given block. The files entitled, Charities and Women, contain information on nationality of respondents, their health and the health of their children, their current and previous residences, income, and property owned.

Values, Institutional Quality, and Development in Portugal, 2012-2013 (ICPSR 36289)

The purpose of this study was to arrive at an authoritative and nuanced assessment of the functioning and quality of Portuguese institutions through an intensive analysis of organizations and agencies deemed emblematic of the nation's institutional framework. The study selected a sample of organizations of national scope, public and private, that are both intrinsically important and capable of casting light on the character on the broader national institutional universe. Investigators were asked not only to provide historical background and detailed analysis of the internal structure and modes of operation of each organization, but to rank them in a series of strategic dimensions of institutional quality drawn from previous theoretical literature in Economics and Sociology. These topics included meritocracy, proactivity, immunity to corruption, technological flexibility, and fairness. The organizations included in this study are: the Energy Corporation (Energias de Portugal - EDP), the Food and Economic Security Authority (Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica - ASAE), the Postal System (Correios de Portugal - CTT), the Public Health System (Serviço Nacional de Saúde - SNS; Hospital de Santa Maria), and the Stock Exchange (New York Stock Exchange - Euronext Lisbon - LSE), and the Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária - AT). Surveys were conducted with personnel of the selected organizations to gauge their general value orientations as well as their attitudes toward the organization itself. Questionnaires were answered anonymously and with full guarantees of confidentiality. Surveys were completed with personnel of five of the six institutions selected for the project; the Tax Authority did not participate. Demographic variables include age, sex, gender, education, occupation, and length of employment.
