This data collection describes the social conditions of the older population of the United States in the late nineteenth century. Variables include personal characteristics such as age, sex, marital status, race, birthplace, number of children, and occupation of sampled older persons. Detailed information, extracted from the 1880 United States Census manuscript census schedules, is provided on household composition and family structure. In addition, occupational and ethnic characteristics of family heads appearing on the same sampled census page as the older person (on census pages grouped by street location) are reported. The data collection consists of three independent samples: (1) a national sample, (2) a Southern urban sample, and (3) a Southern Black sample. Older Blacks are over-represented in the Southern urban and Southern Black samples in order to focus on their family experiences in the urban and rural South.

Detailed information, extracted from the 1900 United States Census manuscript schedules, is provided on household composition and family structure for each sampled older person. Ecological characteristics of the county of residence, e.g., the percentage of the county's population that is foreign born, are provided for most sampled older persons. In addition, occupational and ethnic characteristics of family heads appearing on the same sampled census page as the older person (on census pages grouped by street location) are reported.

The Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) was a large-scale, interdisciplinary study of how families, schools, and neighborhoods affect child and adolescent development. One component of the PHDCN was the Longitudinal Cohort Study, which was a series of coordinated longitudinal studies that followed over 6,000 randomly selected children, adolescents, and young adults, and their primary caregivers over time to examine the changing circumstances of their lives, as well as the personal characteristics, that might lead them toward or away from a variety of antisocial behaviors. Numerous measures were administered to respondents to gauge various aspects of human development, including individual differences, as well as family, peer, and school influences. One of the measures composing the Longitudinal Cohort Study was the Home and Life Interview. The Home and Life Interview was a restructured interview based on the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) inventory used in Wave 1. The Home and Life Interview, like the HOME inventory, sought to observe the developmental environment in which children belonging to the Longitudinal Cohort Study sample were raised. The Home and Life Interview was designed to capture the absence or presence of certain cognitive stimuli, including varied learning experiences and diverse educational materials. The Home and Life Interview also measured the extent and nature of the interactions that occurred between the subject and his or her primary caregiver. In contrast to Wave 1, particular emphasis was placed on evaluating the relationship between the subject and the subject's father or, in the father's absence, a male father figure. An important feature of the Wave 1 HOME inventory was the data collected that described the interior and exterior conditions of the respondent's home and neighborhood. Similar observations were recorded, however, for Wave 2. The Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) was a large-scale, interdisciplinary study of how families, schools, and neighborhoods affect child and adolescent development. Part of the Longitudinal Cohort Study was the Infant Assessment Unit (IAU). The objective of the IAU was to observe how prenatal and postnatal conditions affect the health and cognitive functioning of infants during the first year of life. Consisting of several instruments, the IAU sought to measure infant cognition and quantify the experiences of the sampled infants from Cohort 0 during their first 12 months of life. Additionally, the IAU examined the circumstances surrounding the mother's pregnancy and the subsequent care received by the infant.

The Alfred P. Sloan Study of Youth and Social Development was designed to gather a holistic picture of the adolescent experience. To understand how young people form ideas about their future, the study considered not only what adolescents' aspirations are, but also how they may be influenced by family, peer groups, schools, and their communities. Data were collected within adolescents' three major social environments: schools, families, and peer groups. The study gathered information from 12 sites over five years, to examining such research questions as: (1) how young people of various ages and family backgrounds differ in their conceptions of work, (2) what learning opportunities families with different economic circumstances provide for their children with respect to work and careers, and (3) how schools influence educational expectations and career formation. Data were collected from focal students using the experience sampling method (ESM), an in-depth interview, and a battery of questionnaires. The questionnaires included: (1) the Teenage Life Questionnaire, a modification of instruments used in the National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS:1988-94), (2) a Friends Sociometric form, which provided detailed information about the respondents' peer groups and social ties, and (3) the Career Orientation Survey (COS), which measures respondents' knowledge about jobs and occupational expectations. Cohort students were also administered the questionnaires but did not participate in the ESM or in-depth interviews. All instruments were administered to focal students in Years 1, 3, and 5. In addition, in Year 2, in-depth interviews alone were administered to focal students. In years 1, 3, and 5, a separate group of cohort students were administered the questionnaires. Parts 1, 2, 6, 7, 11, and 12 consist of the Teenage Life Questionnaire data. Parts 3, 4, 8, 9, 13, and 14 consist of the Career Orientation Survey data. Parts 5, 10, and 15 consist of the Experience Sampling Method data. The in-depth interview component will be released by ICPSR as restricted data at a later time.

This study presents time-series demographic, economic, and political data for Chicago, covering each year from 1840 to 1973. Included are election returns, indicators of ethnic and racial composition of the city, political structure, municipal court operations, judicial recruitment, police activities, and selected municipal expenditures. Economic variables measure employment, unemployment, and manufacturing activities. National and local election returns and data on ethnic composition are also provided for individual city wards for each decade between 1890 and 1970.
