Cuban and Brazilian Slave Databases, 1769-1886 and 1707-1888 (ICPSR 39159)

The Cuban slave database consists of detailed demographic and economic data on 33,919 Cuban slaves between 1769 and 1886. These data were collected from the Notarial Protocols from Havana, Cienfuegos, and Santiago housed in the Archivo Nacional de Cuba in 1988.
The Brazilian slave database consists of detailed demographic and economic data on 119,963 Brazilian slaves from different locations in the province (now state) of Minas Gerais: Diamantina, Ouro Preto, Mariana, São João del Rei, and São José del Rei. The sources were the post-mortem inventories housed in the local archives in each of these cities.
Note that the data were hand transcribed from the archives mentioned above.

The series consists of 23 annual censuses spanning the years 1779 to 1802, a collection that for its scope and continuity is unique among serial sources of Spanish American colonial history. The padrones were born of a 1776 Royal Order requesting viceroys and executives of Capitanías Generales and Gobernaciones, such as Puerto Rico, to prepare reports on population, broken down by social status, race, and sex. The focus was the civilian population and, therefore, excludes the regular army troops. The series reports the population of Whites, Indians, free Mulattoes, free Blacks, Mulatto slaves and Black slaves for each of 30 partidos in all 23 years (producing a total of 690 observations). Each socio-racial group was subdivided by sex and an ambiguous "age" criterion, which we have interpreted as the difference between dependent (or minor) status and mayoría de edad (adulthood or full age, which in the Spanish American context was 25 years of age). For each group, there are four subdivisions: adult males, adult females, young males, and young females.

This dataset is part of a larger data collection effort conducted by the principal investigator to study crime, justice, and penal reform in Massachusetts and South Carolina from 1760 to 1880. Data are presented in this file on over 600 slave trials in two counties of ante-bellum South Carolina from 1818 to 1861. Included are variables documenting the accused crime, verdict, punishment, and item stolen (if applicable), as well as the defendant's name, sex, status, owner, and date of the trial.

The purpose of this data collection was to provide data on
the height of slaves and indentured servants in the colonial and
antebellum periods of United States history. Data were taken from
newspaper advertisements describing the runaways. Variables include
the state in which the advertisement was published, the year of the
advertisement, the first and last names of the runaway slave or
indentured servant, and his or her race, sex, age, height, place of
birth, legal status (whether he or she was a convict or in jail at
time of advertisement), profession, and knowledge of the English
language.
