The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) XVI package consists of several sub-surveys, one of which is entitled Residence and Migration of College Students, Fall 1981. The universe of this survey consists of 3,294 institutions of higher education in the United States and its outlying areas. The file contains reported data for 2,998 institutions and imputed data for 289 institutions. Students enrolled for the first time at each of the following levels were reported: undergraduate, graduate, first-professional, and unclassified. Variables provide information on enrollment, state of residence, part- and full-time, and transfers.

The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. The HEGIS Fall Enrollment Component for 1974 sought enrollment data for all public and nonpublic 2- and 4-year institutions and their branches for postbaccalaureate students enrolled for advanced degrees, both graduate and professional. The data cover information on enrollments by class level, number of full-time and part-time male and female students enrolled at various levels (graduate, undergraduate, etc.), sex, race, calendar system, type of accreditation, and enrollments of first-time students. All of these data were acquired in terms of head counts and full-time equivalents, by state.

The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. Data are available for both public and private two-year and four-year institutions. This data collection contains information about the residence and migration of college students elicited as part of the VII package. The package was distributed to approximately 30,408 colleges and universities and their branches located in the United States and its outlying territories. The data provide information on full-time and part-time students based on their in-state, out-of-state, and foreign status. Only students enrolled at an institution for the first time at each of the following class levels were reported: (1) undergraduate, (2) graduate, (3) first-professional, and (4) unclassified. Variables provide information on enrollment, institution name, state of residence, and part-time and full-time status. Information regarding institution name, enrollment number, accreditation type, sex, and race of students is included in this study as well.

This file contains final, edited data for 98 percent of these institutions. Additionally, .6 percent of the 3,265 institutions surveyed were imputed. The data cover information about sex, race, calendar system, type of accreditation, and basic student charges, including graduate and undergraduate tuitions, and room and board charges.

This data collection contains detailed county and state-level ecological and descriptive data for the United States for the years 1790 to 2002. Parts 1-43 are an update to HISTORICAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL DATA: THE UNITED STATES, 1790-1970 (ICPSR 0003). Parts 1-41 contain data from the 1790-1970 censuses. They include extensive information about the social and political character of the United States, including a breakdown of population by state, race, nationality, number of families, size of the family, births, deaths, marriages, occupation, religion, and general economic condition. Parts 42 and 43 contain data from the 1840 and 1870 Censuses of Manufacturing, respectively. These files include information about the number of persons employed in various industries and the quantities of different types of manufactured products. Parts 44-50 provide county-level data from the United States Census of Agriculture for 1840 to 1900. They also include the state and national totals for the variables. The files provide data about the number, types, and prices of various agricultural products. Parts 51-57 contain data on religious bodies and church membership for 1906, 1916, 1926, 1936, and 1952, respectively. Parts 58-69 consist of data from the CITY DATA BOOKS for 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1983, 1988, 1994, and 2000, respectively. These files contain information about population, climate, housing units, hotels, birth and death rates, school enrollment and education expenditures, employment in various industries, and city government finances. Parts 70-81 consist of data from the COUNTY DATA BOOKS for 1947, 1949, 1952, 1956, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1983, 1988, 1994, and 2000, respectively. These files include information about population, employment, housing, agriculture, manufacturing, retail, services, trade, banking, Social Security, local governments, school enrollment, hospitals, crime, and income. Parts 82-84 contain data from USA COUNTIES 1998. Due to the large number of variables from this source, the data were divided into into three separate data files. Data include information on population, vital statistics, school enrollment, educational attainment, Social Security, labor force, personal income, poverty, housing, trade, farms, ancestry, commercial banks, and transfer payments. Parts 85-106 provide data from the United States Census of Agriculture for 1910 to 2002. They provide data about the amount, types, and prices of various agricultural products. Also, these datasets contain extensive information on the amount, expenses, sales, values, and production of farms and machinery.

The Fall Enrollment survey is conducted annually by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) as part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The survey collects data that describe the status of student participation in various types of postsecondary institutions. The data are collected by sex for six racial/ethnic categories as defined by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). There are two parts included in this survey. Part A, Enrollment Summary by Racial/Ethnic Status, provides enrollment data by race/ethnicity and sex and by level and year of study of the student. Part C, Clarifying Questions, supplies information on students enrolled in remedial courses, extension divisions, and branches of schools, as well as numbers of transfer students from in-state, out of state, and other countries.

The Fall Enrollment survey is conducted annually by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) as part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The survey is sent to accredited institutions of higher education and to all other institutions offering bachelor's, master's, doctoral, or first-professional degrees. In even years, the survey was expanded to collect residence data for first-time freshmen. There are three data files in this collection. Part 1, Institutional Characteristics, includes variables on control and level of institution, highest level of offering, accreditation status, Carnegie classification, and state FIPS codes and abbreviations. Part 2 covers enrollment data by race/ethnicity and level of student, while the focus of Part 3 is enrollment data for first-time, first-year students by state residence of student.

The purpose of this data collection was to provide a more accurate measure of the racial/ethnic enrollment in postsecondary institutions in the United States than was previously available. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) collects racial/ethnic enrollment data from higher education institutions on an annual basis. Some institutions do not report these data, and their "unknown" categories have previously been distributed in direct proportion to the "knowns." This resulted in lower than accurate figures for the racial/ethnic categories. With the advent of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), NCES has attempted to eliminate this problem by distributing all "race/ethnicity unknown" students through a two-stage process. First, the differences between reported totals and racial/ethnic details were allocated on a gender and institutional basis by distributing the differences in direct proportion to reported distributions. The second-stage distribution was designed to eliminate the remaining instances of "race/ethnicity unknown." The procedure was to accumulate the reported racial/ethnic total enrollments by state, level, control, and gender, calculate the percentage distributions, and apply these percentages to the reported total enrollments of institutional respondents (in the same state, level, and control) that did not supply race/ethnicity detail. In addition, the original "race/ethnicity unknown" data were also left unaltered for those who wish to review the numbers actually distributed. The racial/ethnic status was broken down into nonresident alien, Black non-Hispanic, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and White non-Hispanic. This file contains data for four-year institutions only. Part 4 provides summary enrollment data by adjusted race/ethnicity and sex of student and by level and year of study of student. The "race/ethnicity unknown" category data were distributed across all known race categories in this file. Also, race data were imputed for institutions that did not report enrollment by race. Part 5, Residence and Migration, contains enrollment data for first-time freshmen, by state of residence. Part 6, Clarifying Questions on Enrollments, provides information on students enrolled in remedial courses, extension divisions, and branches of schools, and numbers of transfer students from in-state, out of state, and other countries.
