This data collection is comprised of records gathered
through the United States Department of Justice, Immigration and
Naturalization Service's alien address reporting program for 1980. The
data for each immigrant include state and ZIP code of residence in
1980, date of entry into the United States, sex, country of birth,
birthdate, country of citizenship, employment status, occupation,
industry, immigration status, and date immigration status was
assigned. Names and addresses have been omitted for confidentiality
purposes. This collection was made available to ICPSR by the National
Chicano Research Network, which was located at the Survey Research
Center of the Institute for Social Research, University of
Michigan.

This data collection supplies standard monthly labor force information for the week prior to the survey. Comprehensive information is given on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 14 years old and older. Supplemental items pertain to immigrant women. Information provided includes date of birth, country of birth, citizenship status, year entered the United States, number of children born, date of birth of the most recent child, total number of children born in countries outside American jurisdiction, and number of children born in countries outside American jurisdiction currently living in the household. Information on demographic characteristics such as, age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationship, educational background, and Hispanic origin, is available for each person in the household enumerated.

Data are presented for two types of immigrants. The first category, New Arrivals, arrived from outside the United States with valid immigrant visas issued by the United States Department of State. Those in the second category, Adjustments, were already in the United States with temporary status and were adjusted to legal permanent residence through petition to the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. Variables include port of entry, month and year of admission, class of admission, and state and area to which immigrants were admitted. Demographic information such as age, sex, marital status, occupation, country of birth, country of last permanent residence, and nationality is also provided.

Other variables provide information on the individual's and the family's real and total wealth, respectively, political party affiliation of the individual, disability condition, number of years the individual lived in Indiana, and percentage of life spent in Indiana.

National Health Interview Survey, 1987: Adoption Supplement (ICPSR 9342)

In 1987, the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) questionnaire included a special section that queried female respondents aged 20 through 54 about adoption. Their responses to the supplement are recorded in this dataset, along with other information about them derived from the core 1987 questionnaire. The special section on adoption asked if any children had ever been adopted, the number that were adopted, and whether these children currently lived in the household. Additional questions in the supplement inquired about the two most recent adoptions: how the adoptions were arranged, the adoptive mother's relationship to the adopted children before adoption, when and how old the adopted children were when they began living with the adoptive mother, the date of birth of the adopted children, and whether the adopted children were born in the United States. Variables from the core questionnaire include height, weight, age, race, Hispanic origin, type of living quarters, region and metropolitan status of residence, marital status, veteran status, education, family income, health status, industry, occupation, activity limitation status, medical conditions, restricted activity days in the past two weeks, bed days in the past two weeks and past 12 months, time interval since the last doctor visit, and the number of doctor visits and short-stay hospital episodes in the past two months.

Responses to the supplement are recorded in this dataset, along with other information derived from the core 1987 NHIS questionnaire. The Cancer Control Study questionnaire included questions on acculturation (such as language, ethnic identification, and place of birth of self and parents), medical care, food knowledge, cancer knowledge and attitudes, cancer screening knowledge and practice, smoking and other tobacco use, and occupational exposures to harmful substances. The National Health Interview Surveys (NHIS) continuously monitor illness and injury, disability and chronic impairments, and health services used by people in the United States. In 1987, additional interviews were conducted with two subsamples of NHIS respondents to gather data on cancer control and epidemiology. Like the Cancer Control supplement, this Cancer Epidemiology supplement included questions on acculturation (in terms of language, ethnicity, and place of birth), dietary knowledge, smoking and tobacco use, and occupational history. The Cancer Epidemiology supplement also included questions on frequency and portion sizes of food and drink items, vitamin and mineral intake, reproduction, hormone use, family's and respondent's history of cancer, height and weight, and participation in social activities. Approximately 90 demographic, health status, and health care variables from the core data files are included on the supplement file.

This data collection provides information on the characteristics of 1,194 Michigan families in rural places, towns and villages, and the urban areas of Detroit in 1850 and 1880. Data are provided on the geographic location of each household and type of locale, total number of residents in the household, and total number of children of the head of each household. Demographic variables provide information on age, race, place of birth, and occupation of the household head and their spouse, place of birth of father and mother of the household head and of their spouse, sex of the household head and their children, and age of the children. Additional variables provide information on the number of children listed as unemployed, the number of parents or parents-in-law of the household head residing in the household, the number of other related adults aged 14 and older, other related children aged 14 and younger living in the household, the number of servants or employees in the household, and the number of boarders or roomers in the household.
