ABC News O.J. Simpson and the Media Poll, July 1994 (ICPSR 3867)

This special topic poll, conducted by ABC News during July 1994, attempted to gauge opinion on the nationally televised O.J. Simpson trial. Respondents were also asked if they thought the country was going in the right direction or off track. Questions regarding the O.J. Simpson trial included how closely the respondents had been following the trial, whether they had seen the preliminary court hearing, how they would rate the media's coverage of the case, and if there was too much coverage of the case. Respondents were asked to speculate on coverage of the Simpson case and if the coverage had effected coverage of other stories, like domestic abuse. Respondents were asked whether they believed that Simpson would receive a fair trial, what they believed the verdict would be, and whether they believed he should get the death penalty if convicted. Background information includes level of education, age, ethnicity, and sex.

CBS News/MTV/Gates Foundation Monthly Poll, March 2005 (ICPSR 4322)

This special topic poll, conducted March 31-April 9, 2005, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. A national sample of 1,586 respondents aged 14 to 24 years was surveyed, including oversamples of African American youth, Hispanic youth, and 14- to 20-year olds. Despite being termed a monthly poll, the foci of this poll were the opinions and judgments of teenagers and young adults about various aspects of the education system and process in the United States. Views were sought on the most important problem facing young people, the highest level of education respondents hoped to achieve, the highest level they expected to actually achieve, and whether a college degree was necessary to "get ahead". Respondents were asked about their plans after high school, the quality of their high school and its teachers and staff, whether their high school education was adequately preparing them for college and/or the job market, what measures respondents took or would like take to improve their chances of getting into the college of their choice, the importance of grade point averages and performance on standardized tests in getting into college, and their ability to get information about educational opportunities. Similar questions were asked of those respondents who were college students, regarding assistance received from college professors, the importance of internships, and whether college was adequately preparing them to get a well-paying job after graduation. Additional questions addressed MTV's involvement in issues concerning young people and how much impact MTV could have in raising awareness among young people about the importance of education. Demographic information includes age, race, sex, education, employment status, ethnicity, parents' education, perceived social class, level of religious participation, religious preference, whether respondents considered themselves to be an evangelical or born-again Christian, and the presence of other household members between the ages of 14 and 24.

Detroit Area Study, 1977: Attitude-Behavior Consistency and Attribution of Responsibility (ICPSR 8189)

The Detroit Area Study is an ongoing series of surveys conducted by the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan. These surveys serve two purposes: to provide useful survey information about various population characteristics and social issues selected as topics by principal investigators, and to provide actual survey research experience for graduate students. This study explores two topics related to social psychology. Attitude-behavior consistency was measured by asking respondents about their television viewing and their attitudes toward television violence. Follow-up interviews were conducted by telephone to ascertain respondents' actual television viewing. In addition, some respondents were asked to sign a petition regarding violence on television. The study of attribution was conducted by reading respondents a series of vignettes and then asking several questions regarding the characters' responsibility for their actions.

The primary goal of the National Politics Study (NPS) was to gather comparative data about individuals' political attitudes, beliefs, aspirations, and behaviors at the beginning of the 21st century. Exploring the nature of political involvement and participation among individuals from different racial and ethnic groups, the survey included questions about voting preferences, party affiliation, organizational membership, immigration, racial consciousness, acculturation, and views of government policies.

National Politics Study, 2008 (ICPSR 36167)

The 2008 election offers a rare opportunity to analyze a significant event in American history - the election of the first African American president. Because the longitudinal panel series began in 2004, prior to the emergence of President Obama as a serious political candidate and nominee, the results from these surveys provide a rare vehicle for comparing data over time on important demographic, political, and, of particular interest given President Obama's racial background, racial and ethnic issues related to vote choice and political behavior. The wealth of data obtained from this survey will benefit scholars for many years to come.

This report provides a general overview of some of the key findings from the 2008 data collection. Topics covered include: demographic information of the population, work status, home ownership, political ideology, party identification, presidential choice, race relations, feeling thermometer data for a variety of political figures and relevant groups or organizations, and current events such as the Iraq War and same-sex marriage. Because differences among the racial and ethnic groups surveyed in this study are of political significance (Whites, African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Caribbean Blacks), much of the data presented here is disaggregated by racial and ethnic group.

This News Media Survey provides information on consumer media exposure and interests, exposure to and views about science, opinions about scientists and Russian science, and long-distance telephone usage over time. Variables explore respondents' exposure to various media, their use of the media as a source of scientific information, their attitudes toward science, and the effects of science on society, their opinions of the character of scientists and the comparative quality of Russian and United States science, and the extent and quality of respondents' information about earth satellites. Other variables present information on the effects of the recession on respondents' families, their financial assets relative to the previous year, and their air travel. Demographic variables provide information on age, sex, race, marital status, education, occupation, religion, family size, and family income.
