This data collection contains information from samples of housing units in 11 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Data include year the structure was built, type and number of living quarters, occupancy status, presence of commercial or medical establishments on the property, and property value. Additional data focus on kitchen and plumbing facilities, type of heating fuel used, source of water, sewage disposal, and heating and air-conditioning equipment. Questions concerning quality of housing include condition of walls and floors, adequacy of heat in winter, availability of electrical outlets, basement and roof water leakage, and exterminator service for mice or rats. Data on housing expenses include amount of mortgage or rent payments and costs of utilities, fuel, garbage collection, property insurance, and real estate taxes. Respondents who had moved recently were questioned about characteristics of the previous residence and reasons for moving. Residents were also asked to evaluate the quality of their neighborhoods with respect to such issues as crime, street noise, quality of roads, commercial activities, presence of trash, litter, abandoned structures or offensive odors, and adequacy of services such as police protection, shopping facilities, and schools. In addition to housing characteristics, some demographic information is provided on household members, such as age, sex, race, marital status, income, and relationship to householder. Additional data are available on the householder, including years of school completed, Spanish origin, and length of residence.

American Housing Survey (AHS) - Table Creator (ICPSR 36753)

The American Housing Survey (AHS), the most comprehensive housing survey in the U.S., provides up-to-date information on the size and composition of the housing stock in our country. This survey delivers information about the types of homes in which people are now living and the characteristics of these homes, as well as the costs of running and maintaining them. National data are collected every other year and metropolitan area data are collected on a rotating basis. The AHS is sponsored by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The AHS Table Creator gives data users the ability to create customized tables from the AHS data without having to use the Public Use File (microdata).

Like the microdata, the AHS Table Creator provides current information on a wide range of housing subjects, including size and composition of the nation's housing inventory, vacancies, fuel usage, physical condition of housing units, characteristics of occupants, equipment breakdowns, home improvements, mortgages and other housing costs, people eligible for and beneficiaries of subsidized housing, home values, and characteristics of recent movers.

For the first time since 1985, the survey selected new national and metropolitan area longitudinal samples. In addition to the "core" data, the AHS collected "topical" data using a series of topical modules. The 2015 AHS includes topical supplements on 1) the presence of arts and cultural opportunities in the community, 2) health and safety hazards in the home, 3) food insecurity, and 4) the use of housing counseling services. Data users can also explore the new national and metropolitan area longitudinal samples as well as the topical supplements using the AHS Table Creator.

Policy analysts, program managers, budget analysts, and Congressional staff use the AHS data and table creator to monitor supply and demand, as well as changes in housing conditions and costs, in order to assess housing needs. Analyses based on the AHS are used to advise the executive and legislative branches in the development of housing policies. HUD uses the AHS to improve efficiency and effectiveness and design housing programs appropriate for different target groups, such as first-time home buyers and the elderly. Academic researchers and private organizations also use AHS data in efforts of specific interest and concern to their respective communities.

The AHS is conducted every two years from May and September in odd-numbered years. HUD sometimes adjusts this schedule and/or sample depending on budget constraints. Public use microdata and reports are released approximately 12 months after data collection.

This data collection provides travel-to-work data for respondents living in 21 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs). Data cover respondents' place of work, means of transportation to work, carpooling and carpool occupancy, time and distance from home to work, and time of departure for work. The data also include transportation-related information such as access to a garage or carport at respondent's home, cost of rented parking spaces, and number of cars owned. Information about respondents's neighborhoods includes existence of street noise or heavy street traffic, poor street conditions, crime, objectionable odors, adequacy of schools, fire and police protection, health clinics, and respondents' opinions of the overall neighborhood quality. The data contained in this collection are from the travel-to-work supplement in ANNUAL HOUSING SURVEY, 1975 [UNITED STATES]: SMSA FILES (ICPSR 7976). The travel-to-work supplement was sponsored by the United States Department of Transportation, and the data was collected by the Census Bureau during April 1975 through March 1976. The data are contained in 21 files, one file for each SMSA represented. Demographic information collected on each respondent includes sex, age, race, marital status, and household relationship. The 2004 Detroit Area Study (DAS) is a face-to-face survey of adults in the Detroit, Michigan tri-county area. The 2004 Chicago Area Study (CAS) is a parallel survey conducted in Chicago, Illinois. Topics in this survey addressed racial issues, residence and housing, neighborhood evaluations, racial attitudes, labor market issues, and racial segregation in the Detroit and Chicago areas. Respondents were asked for opinions on their local and surrounding communities, their experiences searching for housing, feelings about possible relocation, and opinions on the redevelopment of neighborhoods in the city of Detroit and the city of Chicago. Other questions addressed the household's financial situation, home ownership, amount of household debts and assets, and history of receiving public assistance. Information was also collected on the types of schools children in the household attended, whether respondents and their parents were born in the United States, and languages spoken at home. Interviewer observations about the condition of the respondent's neighborhood were also included. Demographic variables include respondent's sex, age, marital/cohabitation status, United States citizenship status, political philosophy, household income, number of children in the household, and the race, ethnicity, education level, and employment status of respondents and their spouses or partners.

In an original study conducted in 1965, Leo Grebler, Joan Moore, and Ralph Guzman surveyed Mexican Americans in San Antonio, Texas, and Los Angeles, California. The first survey provided a rich cross-sectional view of this population's demographics and attitudes, Ortiz and Telles' 35 year follow-up now allows for a longitudinal view of the behavior and ethnic identification of first- through fourth-generation Mexican Americans in these areas. The new survey was used to test hypotheses related to Mexican Americans' social mobility, their ethnic identity and behavior, their experiences with discrimination, and the relationship between socioeconomic status and ethnic identity. Data includes birth dates, citizenship information, education, income, housing, language, medical, religious affiliations, immediate and extended family demographic information, and self perception in regards to ethnicity. There are four versions of the survey, "Child Respondents" in English and Spanish and "Informant Respondents" in English and Spanish. Additionally each survey includes an interviewer questionnaire, which asks interviewers to document their observations of the respondent's home (interior and exterior), cooperation, behavior, language proficiency, and gender.

The Survey of Consumer Attitudes and Behavior series (also known as the Surveys of Consumers) was undertaken to measure changes in consumer attitudes and expectations, to understand why such changes occur, and to evaluate how they relate to consumer decisions to save, borrow, or make discretionary purchases. The data regularly include the Index of Consumer Sentiment, the Index of Current Economic Conditions, and the Index of Consumer Expectations. Since the 1940s, these surveys have been produced quarterly through 1977 and monthly thereafter.

The surveys conducted in 1974 focused on topics such as evaluations and expectations about personal finances, employment, price changes, and the national business situation. Opinions were collected regarding respondents' appraisals of present market conditions for purchasing houses, automobiles, computers, and other durables. Also explored in this survey, were respondents' types of savings and financial investments, loan use, family income, and retirement planning.

This survey was undertaken to assess consumer sentiment and buying plans. Open-ended questions were asked concerning evaluations and expectations about personal finances, employment, recession, price changes, and the national business situation. Additional variables probe respondents' buying intentions for a house, automobiles, appliances, and other consumer durables, and the respondents' appraisals of present market conditions for purchasing houses and other durables. Other variables probe respondents' opinions of government, government price controls, government spending, bureaucrats, income tax filing and returns, and the relative merits of new and old small cars, as well as their financial status relative to the previous year. Information is also provided on respondents' choice of presidential candidate in the 1972 election, stock ownership and other forms of investment, car ownership and the cost, make and use of it, their spending plans for their income tax refunds, and savings. Demographic variables provide information on respondents' age, sex, race, ethnicity, marital status, education, occupation, employment status, and family income.
