Detroit Area Study, 1958: The Religious Factor (ICPSR 7279)

This study of 656 respondents in the Detroit metropolitan area provides information on their religious attitudes and activities, as well as their economic and political attitudes and behavior. Respondents were asked about their belief in God and in life after death, the effects of their religious beliefs on their political beliefs, and the kinds of issues religious leaders should take a public stand on. Several questions probed respondents' views of other religious groups, as well as their attitudes on such issues as gambling, birth control, and the use of alcohol. Other topics covered include: information about respondents' economic behaviors such as saving and purchases on installment plans, respondents' opinions of government take-over of large industries and greater involvement in education and housing, respondents' attitudes toward income-earning work, science, degree of free speech, and racial equity, inter-group images, family and child-rearing patterns, welfare legislation, civil liberties, international relations, legislation on moral issues, doctrinal orthodoxy, devotionalism, and the effects of religion on politics as well as on daily life. Demographic variables specify age, sex, race, education, place of birth, marital status, number of children, length of time at present residence, religion, political party affiliation, income, occupation, original nationality of husband's and wife's family, home ownership, social class identification, and length of residence in the Detroit area.

Detroit Area Study, 1997: Social Change in Religion and Child Rearing (ICPSR 4120)

For this survey, respondents from three counties in the Detroit, Michigan, area were queried about their work, health, marriage and family, finances, political views, religion, and child rearing. With respect to finances, respondent views were elicited on credit card purchases, recording expenditures, and savings and investments. Regarding political views, respondents were questioned about political preferences, presidential values, freedom of speech, nuclear war, and the interest of public officials. Questions also addressed religious beliefs and experiences, including the religiosity of respondents' parents, belief in and relationship with God, the relationship between science and religion, school prayer, divorce, and homosexuality. Additional religious questions -- based on the respondents' religious preference (i.e., Protestant, Catholic, Jew, Other Religion, or No Preference/Agnostic/Atheist Only) -- also were asked, covering topics such as interfaith marriages, religion of friends, and observance of religious holy days. Questions were asked about the views of respondents' religious leaders on issues including drinking, abortion, and test-tube fertilization. Regarding child rearing, views were elicited on issues including religious preference of child(ren) raised, religious training given to child(ren), and frequency of prayer before meals. Background information includes marital status, employment, political orientation, and income.

This survey was undertaken to assess consumer sentiment and buying plans. Open-ended questions were asked concerning evaluations and expectations about personal finances, employment, recession, price changes, and the national business situation. Additional questions probed respondents' buying intentions for a house, automobiles, appliances, and other consumer durables, and the respondents' appraisals of present market conditions for purchasing a house. Other items elicited information on respondents' degree of satisfaction with the amount of money in their savings accounts, their assessments of their financial status relative to the previous year and to that of their parents at a comparable age, their views of government and government officials, government's role in improving the quality of life, future energy supply, and their feelings about their lives, satisfaction with life in the United States, and their income and jobs. Data were also collected on respondents' knowledge of current affairs, as well as their opinions of the relative merits of small cars and standard full-size cars and foreign and American cars, penalties for marijuana use, treatment by public officials, freedom to make public speeches against democracy, communism in the United States, the United States government's help to the South Vietnamese government, government support for the rights of Black people, racial desegregation, Black empowerment, causes of crime and lawlessness, monetary drive of lawyers and doctors, the state of the public good, and unionization of workers. Respondents also provided information on their car ownership and plans to buy a new one, political party identification, self-identified ideological position, political party candidate preference, the state of health of respondents' parents and the health care and physical assistance provided. Demographic variables describe respondents' age, sex, race, marital status, education, occupation, religion, employment status, and family income.

The Survey of Consumer Attitudes and Behavior series (also known as the Surveys of Consumers) was undertaken to measure changes in consumer attitudes and expectations, to understand why such changes occur, and to evaluate how they relate to consumer decisions to save, borrow, or make discretionary purchases. The data regularly include the Index of Consumer Sentiment, the Index of Current Economic Conditions, and the Index of Consumer Expectations.

This survey was undertaken to assess consumer sentiment and buying plans. Open-ended questions were asked concerning evaluations and expectations about personal finances, employment, recession, price changes, and the national business situation. Additional variables probe respondents' buying intentions for a house, automobiles, appliances, and other consumer durables, and the respondents' appraisals of present market conditions for purchasing houses and other durables. Other variables probe respondents' opinions of their health relative to that of other people in their age group, the relative merits of small and standard full-size cars as well as of small foreign cars and small American cars, the long-term cost and durability of certain household appliances, their satisfaction with the amount of money they had in savings, their satisfaction with life in the United States and with their lives in general, the United States government's help to the South Vietnamese government, and the seriousness of Arab nations' intentions regarding peace with Israel. Additional topics covered include a solution to the energy crisis, penalties for smoking marijuana, freedom to make uncomplimentary public speeches, communism in the United States and free speech, causes of crime and lawlessness, the role of government in improving the quality of life of the people, job satisfaction, monetary drive of lawyers and doctors and the state of the public good, and unionization of workers, as well as their financial status relative to the previous year and relative to that of their parents at a comparable age. Information is also provided on respondents' car ownership and the make and use of it, religious group affiliation, hobbies, political influence, political party identification, and self-identified ideological position. Respondents were asked to give assessments of their financial status relative to the previous year, as well as their opinions of political leaders such as George Wallace, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Ted Kennedy, the freedom to make public speeches against democracy, the most important problems facing the country, racial integration, fuel cost increase, and their satisfaction with their income, health, standard of living, marriage, and their life as a whole. The survey also elicited respondents' feelings about their choice of presidential candidate in 1972, their political party identification, ideological leanings, their income tax filing and refunds, their anticipated age for retiring, retirement income and residence, and their car ownership and plans to buy a new one.
