The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS)series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. A component of the HEGIS XIX survey package, this data collection furnishes final finance data for 3,302 colleges and universities and their branches throughout the United States. Information is supplied on current funds revenues by source, current funds expenditures and mandatory transfers by functions, physical plant assets, indebtedness on physical plant, details of endowment assets, changes in fund balances, tuition and fees, federal grants, local grants, and annuity additions and deductions.

This survey is the eighth in a series of data collection efforts aimed at providing information on the number and type of juveniles placed in state and local residential facilities for juvenile offenders. Six types of public and private facilities are covered: (1) detention centers, (2) shelters, (3) reception or diagnostic centers, (4) training schools, (5) ranches, forestry camps, and farms, and (6) halfway houses and group homes. Survey items include facility capacity, number of full-time and part-time staff, number of admissions and discharges, average quarterly population, and expenditures by the facility. Data for facility residents include age, sex, and average length of stay.

This study contains data for 48 states at decennial points from 1890 to 1960, including electoral, demographic, economic, public expenditure, and educational information. The majority of the variables in the dataset are derived measures such as percentages, ratios, indices, and ranks of the states along various dimensions presented. The data were collected and prepared by the staff of the Comparative Political Behavior Project of the Cornell University Center for International Studies.
