Adaptation Process of Cuban and Mexican Immigrants in the United States, 1972-1979 (ICPSR 9672)

For this data collection, Cuban and Mexican male immigrants were interviewed upon their entry into the United States in 1973-1974, with follow-up interviews in 1976 and 1979. The project sought to explore the causes and results of changes that occur following immigration by examining the complex interrelationships between the effects of what immigrants "bring with them" and the social and economic context that receives them. The first interview elicited demographic information such as marital status, number of children, education, parental information, present and prior occupations, date and community of birth, prior residency in the United States, present residency, relatives and friends in the United States, religious practices, and association membership. Respondents were also asked about their reasons for coming to the United States, plans to change residency, perceptions of discrimination in the United States, and aspirations concerning future occupations, salaries, education, and opportunities to reach their goals. Subsequent interviews expanded upon or recorded changes in these areas and also added wife's information and items on perceptions of problems in the United States, ethnicity of social relationships and neighborhood, satisfaction with living in the United States, plans to return to their homeland, languages spoken, read, and listened to, whether residence was owned or rented, and whether respondent had become a United States citizen. The study also recorded Duncan Scores, Treiman Scores, and scores on the Kahl Modernity Index, Knowledge of English Index, and Knowledge of U.S. Index.

The survey is from the American Mosaic Project, a multiyear, multimethod study of the bases of solidarity and diversity in American life. This study is part of a time-series collection of national surveys fielded continuously since 1952. The election studies are designed to present data on Americans' social backgrounds, enduring political predispositions, social and political values, perceptions and evaluations of groups and candidates, opinions on questions of public policy, and participation in political life. A Black supplement of 116 respondents is included with the national cross-section of 1,557 respondents. The purpose of this data collection was to assess the impact on public opinion of an informational program on health care reform in the United States. This educational campaign, designed and carried out by the Public Agenda Foundation with the cooperation of various media and community organizations, was intended to inform the public in targeted communities about the condition of the United States health care system, particularly regarding cost and accessibility of health care, and various reform initiatives being debated by policymakers. A pre- and post-treatment survey design with controls was used. Surveys were conducted in Wichita, Kansas (the treatment community) before and after the program was administered in that city. Parallel surveys were conducted in Des Moines, Iowa (the control community), where the program was not introduced. In both cities, respondents were asked their opinions about the cost of health care, access to health care, and health care reform, including willingness to pay more taxes for health care. In addition, respondents were queried about the status of health insurance coverage for themselves and their families, and how satisfied they were with the health care services that they and their families had received in the last few years. The surveys also solicited opinions concerning other issues, such as crime and drug abuse, the economy and unemployment, race relations, the quality of public school education, pollution and the environment, alcoholism, and homelessness. Background information on respondents includes age, sex, marital status, education, employment, and family income.

CBS News/Black Entertainment Television (BET) Monthly Poll, July 2004 (ICPSR 4154)

This poll is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents -- all Blacks/African Americans -- were asked to give their opinions on the 2004 presidential campaign and the candidates, the way the Bush administration was handling certain issues, and the war in Iraq. Questions were asked regarding respondents' confidence that their votes would be accurately counted, whether there was a deliberate attempt to prevent African Americans from voting or having their votes properly counted, how the voting problems reported in Florida in the 2000 presidential election would affect voter turnout, and which candidate had more 'soul'. Respondents were also asked about various issues facing the country, such as how to provide African Americans with more jobs, the best way to help more African Americans go to college, and whether the United States should intervene when crises occur in Africa. Additional questions queried respondents' health behavior, exercise patterns, experiences with low carbohydrate diets, and attitudes toward reinstating the military draft. Background information includes voter registration status, sex, religious preference, education, age, ethnicity, and income.

CBS News/MTV/Gates Foundation Monthly Poll, March 2005 (ICPSR 4322)

This special topic poll, conducted March 31-April 9, 2005, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. A national sample of 1,586 respondents aged 14 to 24 years was surveyed, including oversamples of African American youth, Hispanic youth, and 14- to 20-year olds. Despite being termed a monthly poll, the foci of this poll were the opinions and judgments of teenagers and young adults about various aspects of the education system and process in the United States. Views were sought on the most important problem facing young people, the highest level of education respondents hoped to achieve, the highest level they expected to actually achieve, and whether a college degree was necessary to "get ahead". Respondents were asked about their plans after high school, the quality of their high school and its teachers and staff, whether their high school education was adequately preparing them for college and/or the job market, what measures respondents took or would like take to improve their chances of getting into the college of their choice, the importance of grade point averages and performance on standardized tests in getting into college, and their ability to get information about educational opportunities. Similar questions were asked of those respondents who were college students, regarding assistance received from college professors, the importance of internships, and whether college was adequately preparing them to get a well-paying job after graduation. Additional questions addressed MTV's involvement in issues concerning young people and how much impact MTV could have in raising awareness among young people about the importance of education. Demographic information includes age, race, sex, education, employment status, ethnicity, parents' education, perceived social class, level of religious participation, religious preference, whether respondents considered themselves to be an evangelical or born-again Christian, and the presence of other household members between the ages of 14 and 24.

Summary Tape File 4A contains sample data weighted to represent the total population. The collection also contains 100-percent counts and unweighted sample counts for total persons and total housing units. Additional population and housing variables include items such as age, ancestry, disability, citizenship, education, income, marital status, race, sex, travel time to work, hours worked, rent, persons in household, acreage of property, tenure, value of housing unit, number of vehicles, and monthly owner costs. Data are provided for states and their subareas in hierarchical sequence down to the block group level. Within STF 4A, data for each state are represented in one "A" record file and ten "B" record files. The "A" records have 123 population tables and 80 housing tables. These include five population tables and one housing table showing 37 categories of race, and five population tables and one housing table with 26 categories of Hispanic origin. Data are included for all persons for each summary level and geographic component level within a unit of geography. More detailed data are presented in 178 population and 85 housing tables in the "B" records. The "B" records include a separate file for all persons and up to nine separate race and Hispanic-origin files.

This data collection contains tables from the 1980 Census of Population and Housing, which were tabulated for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs), tracted portions of states outside SMSAs, and the following SMSA components: counties, places with 10,000 or more inhabitants, and census tracts. The tables primarily contain sample data inflated to represent the total population, plus 100-percent counts and unweighted sample counts of persons and housing units. Tabulated population items include household relationship, sex, race, age, marital status, Spanish origin, education, nativity, citizenship, language spoken at home, ancestry, children, place of residence in 1975, veteran status, work disability status, labor force status, travel time to work, means of transportation to work, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Tables of housing variables cover number of units at address, presence of complete plumbing facilities, number of rooms, tenure (whether owned or rented), vacancy status, housing unit value, contract rent, units in structure, stories in structure and presence of a passenger elevator, year structure was built, year householder moved into unit, acreage, source of water, sewage disposal, heating equipment, house heating fuel, water heating fuel, cooking fuel, kitchen facilities, number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, telephone in housing unit, air conditioning, number of automobiles, vans, and light trucks, and selected monthly owner costs (real estate taxes, property insurance, utilities, and mortgage payments). Two series of population and housing tables, A and B, are shown for each geographic unit. The A tables are tabulated once for the total population, while the B tables are repeated for the total population and up to six different race and Spanish origin groups: (1) white, (2) Black, (3) American Indian, Eskimo and Aleut, (4) Asian and Pacific Islander, (5) other race, and (6) Spanish origin. Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS) was designed to study the adaptation process of the immigrant second generation which is defined broadly as United States-born children with at least one foreign-born parent or children born abroad but brought at an early age to the United States. The original survey was conducted with large samples of second-generation immigrant children attending the 8th and 9th grades in public and private schools in the metropolitan areas of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale in Florida and San Diego, California. Conducted in 1992, the first survey had the purpose of ascertaining baseline information on immigrant families, children's demographic characteristics, language use, self-identities, and academic attainment. The total sample size was 5,262. Respondents came from 77 different nationalities, although the sample reflects the most sizable immigrant nationalities in each area. Three years later, corresponding to the time in which respondents were about to graduate from high school, the first follow-up survey was conducted. Its purpose was to examine the evolution of key adaptation outcomes including language knowledge and preference, ethnic identity, self-esteem, and academic attainment over the adolescent years. The survey also sought to establish the proportion of second-generation youths who dropped out of school before graduation. This follow-up survey retrieved 4,288 respondents or 81.5 percent of the original sample. Together with this follow-up survey, a parental survey was conducted. The purpose of this interview was to establish directly characteristics of immigrant parents and families and their outlooks for the future including aspirations and plans for the children. Since many immigrant parents did not understand English, this questionnaire was translated and administered in six different foreign languages. In total, 2,442 parents or 46 percent of the original student sample were interviewed. During 2001-2003, or a decade after the original survey, a final follow-up was conducted. The sample now averaged 24 years of age and, hence, patterns of adaptation in early adulthood could be readily assessed. The original and follow-up surveys were conducted mostly in schools attended by respondents, greatly facilitating access to them. Most respondents had already left school by the time of the second follow-up so they had to be contacted individually in their place of work or residence. Respondents were located not only in the San Diego and Miami areas, but also in more than 30 different states, with some surveys returned from military bases overseas. Mailed questionnaires were the principal source of completed data in this third survey. In total, CILS-III retrieved complete or partial information on 3,613 respondents representing 68.9 percent of the original sample and 84.3 percent of the first follow-up.Relevant adaptation outcomes measured in this survey include educational attainment, employment and occupational status, income, civil status and ethnicity of spouses/partners, political attitudes and participation, ethnic and racial identities, delinquency and incarceration, attitudes and levels of identification with American society, and plans for the future.

Current Population Survey, October 2010: School Enrollment and Internet Use Supplement (ICPSR 31541)

This data collection is comprised of responses from two sets of survey questionnaires, the basic Current Population Survey (CPS) and a survey on the topics of School Enrollment and Internet Use in the United States, which was administered as a supplement to the 2010 October CPS. The Census Bureau and the National Center for Education Statistics jointly sponsored the supplemental questions for October.

The CPS, administered monthly, is a labor force survey providing current estimates of the economic status and activities of the population of the United States, for the week prior to the survey. Specifically, the CPS provides estimates of total employment (both farm and nonfarm), nonfarm self-employed persons, domestics, and unpaid helpers in nonfarm family enterprises, wage and salaried employees, and estimates of total unemployment.

The October 2010 supplemental survey queried respondents on school enrollment for all persons in the household aged three years and over. Supplement data includes information collected on current grade at public or private school, whether currently attending college full- or part-time at a two- or four-year institution, year last attended a regular school, year graduated from high school, grade retention, and whether any business, vocational, technical, trade, or correspondence courses were ever taken. Respondents were also queried on Internet and computer use, particularly if members of the household use the Internet, and how access to the Internet is obtained.

Demographic variables include age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, veteran status, educational attainment, occupation, and income.

The 1989 Detroit Area Study is a social, economic, and political profile of the tri-county Detroit area (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties). This study addresses fundamental issues of inequality and explores the public's views on crime, education, class, and race. Assessments of the nature and extent of citizen involvement in these community problems and issues are included. A substantial part of the study is devoted to a detailed examination of the extent of racial segregation in the tri-county area, with particular attention to the gap between Blacks and whites in economic resources, vulnerability to crime, assessments of community problems, and political participation. Demographic characteristics of respondents include marital status, education, age, race, sex, employment status, union membership, and income.

Detroit Area Study, 1990: Community Issues (ICPSR 2881)

This survey focused on issues and problems facing residents of Detroit and the surrounding metropolitan area in 1990, including environmental concerns, problems with law enforcement and drugs, crime, education, housing, jobs, cost of living, welfare, taxes and government services, government administration, moral values, and other concerns. Respondents were asked about the importance they placed on each issue and the perceived priority the government gave to each issue. Environmental issues were further examined with respect to specific environmental concerns, such as pollution, exposure to hazardous waste, loss or harm to wildlife and/or their habitats, and the depletion and conservation of natural resources. Respondents' degree of political and community involvement was gauged through questions regarding their voting behavior, their work for or involvement with a political party or community organization, and the type of community organizations to which they belonged. Racial attitudes were also probed, with questions on the economic position of African Americans, political and economic equality, and attitudes toward African-American subgroups (young, older, middle class). Demographic information includes respondents' gender, age, marital status, race, ethnicity, area of residence, type of residence, duration of residence, and whether the residence was owned by the respondent or rented.

The 2004 Detroit Area Study (DAS) is a face-to-face survey of adults in the Detroit, Michigan tri-county area. The 2004 Chicago Area Study (CAS) is a parallel survey conducted in Chicago, Illinois. Topics in this survey addressed racial issues, residence and housing, neighborhood evaluations, racial attitudes, labor market issues, and racial segregation in the Detroit and Chicago areas. Respondents were asked for opinions on their local and surrounding communities, their experiences searching for housing, feelings about possible relocation, and opinions on the redevelopment of neighborhoods in the city of Detroit and the city of Chicago. Other questions addressed the household's financial situation, home ownership, amount of household debts and assets, and history of receiving public assistance. Information was also collected on the types of schools children in the household attended, whether respondents and their parents were born in the United States, and languages spoken at home. Interviewer observations about the condition of the respondent's neighborhood were also included. Demographic variables include respondent's sex, age, marital/cohabitation status, United States citizenship status, political philosophy, household income, number of children in the household, and the race, ethnicity, education level, and employment status of respondents and their spouses or partners.

The Enhanced Services for the Hard-to-Employ (HtE) Demonstration and Evaluation Project was a 10-year study (taken on by the MDRC) that evaluated innovative strategies aimed at improving employment and other outcomes for groups who faced serious barriers to employment. The Enhanced Services for the Hard-to-Employ is the first comprehensive attempt to understand the diverse low-income population and to test interventions aimed at the most common barriers that are encountered in this population's employment. The HtE demonstration was designed to evaluate a variety of innovative ways to boost employment, reduce welfare receipt, and promote well-being in low-income populations. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Enhanced Early Head Start (EHS) program on addressing the developmental needs of young children living in poverty by offering enhanced services aimed at proactively addressing the employment and educational needs of their parents. This program included the addition of on-site self-sufficiency specialists to work with program staff and families on topics such as, formalized employment, self-sufficiency services and community partnerships with local employment-focused and educational agencies. The Early Head Start full research sample consists of 610 individuals randomly assigned between August 2004 and December 2006 (305 members in the program group and 305 in the control group). The research team followed the two groups for over three years, using surveys and administrative data. All 610 sample members completed a baseline survey at random assignment, providing basic demographic information, employment and child care history prior to the study. Two follow-up surveys were collected at the 18-month and 42-month mark. At 42-months, respondents who responded to the 18-month survey were asked about child care activities since their earlier survey interview date, while respondents who responded only to the 42-month survey were asked about child care activities since random assignment. Data were collected on receipt of EHS services and assistance programs, TANF history, type and amount of child care used, child immunization records, parenting, child behavior, child social-emotional skills, as well as child reading and math skills. Demographic information includes age, race, marital status, education, source of income, employment status, and public assistance information.

Flint [Michigan] Adolescent Study (FAS): A Longitudinal Study of School Dropout and Substance Use, 1994-1997 (ICPSR 34598)

The Flint Adolescent Study (FAS) interviewed 850 ninth graders in the four public high schools of Flint, MI. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Projects for Urban and Regional Affairs and Flint Community Schools. The goal of the study was to explore the protective factors associated with school dropout and alcohol and substance use. The study followed the youths for four years beginning in the Fall of 1994. The sample reflected the overall student body in the Flint high schools. In order to study those students most at risk for leaving school before graduation, individuals with grade point averages of 3.0 and below were selected.

Interviews were conducted face-to-face with each student at the school or in a community location for students who were out of school. Each interview took about one hour to complete. At the end of the interview students were asked to complete the last section of the questionnaire by themselves which contains questions about their drug use and sexual behavior.

Information obtained from the youths includes: participation in church, school, and community organizations; social support and influence of family and friends; self esteem and psychological well being; delinquent and violent behaviors; alcohol and substance use; sex behavior and child bearing; school attitudes and performance; and family structure and relationships. The Youths were asked to complete a brief questionnaire at the end of the interview about their alcohol and substance use, and sexual behavior. In years 3 and 4 questions also asked about driving behavior, attachment style, stress, mentoring, and racial identity. Data was also collected about parental education and occupation.

The Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS, formerly known as the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study) follows a cohort of nearly 5,000 children born in large, U.S. cities between 1998 and 2000. The study oversampled births to unmarried couples; and, when weighted, the data are representative of births in large U.S. cities at the turn of the century. The FFCWS was originally designed to address four questions of great interest to researchers and policy makers:

  1. What are the conditions and capabilities of unmarried parents, especially fathers?
  2. What is the nature of the relationships between unmarried parents?
  3. How do children born into these families fare?
  4. How do policies and environmental conditions affect families and children?

The FFCWS consists of interviews with mothers, fathers, and/or primary caregivers at birth and again when children are ages 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, and 22. The parent interviews collected information on attitudes, relationships, parenting behavior, demographic characteristics, health (mental and physical), economic and employment status, neighborhood characteristics, and program participation. Beginning at age 9, children were interviewed directly (either during the home visit or on the telephone). The direct child interviews collected data on family relationships, home routines, schools, peers, and physical and mental health, as well as health behaviors.

A collaborative study of the FFCWS, the In-Home Longitudinal Study of Pre-School Aged Children (In-Home Study) collected data from a subset of the FFCWS Core respondents at the Year 3 and 5 follow-ups to ask how parental resources in the form of parental presence or absence, time, and money influence children under the age of 5. The In-Home Study collected information on a variety of domains of the child's environment, including: the physical environment (quality of housing, nutrition and food security, health care, adequacy of clothing and supervision) and parenting (parental discipline, parental attachment, and cognitive stimulation). In addition, the In-Home Study also collected information on several important child outcomes, including anthropometrics, child behaviors, and cognitive ability. This information was collected through interviews with the child's primary caregiver, and direct observation of the child's home environment and the child's interactions with his or her caregiver.

Similar activities were conducted during the Year 9 follow-up. At the Year 15 follow-up, a condensed set of home visit activities were conducted with a subsample of approximately 1,000 teens. Teens who participated in the In-Home Study were also invited to participate in a Sleep Study and were asked to wear an accelerometer on their non-dominant wrist for seven consecutive days to track their sleep (Sleep Actigraphy Data) and that day's behaviors and mood (Daily Sleep Actigraphy and Diary Survey Data).

An additional collaborative study collected data from the child care provider (Year 3) and teacher (Years 9 and 15) through mail-based surveys. Saliva samples were collected at Year 9 and 15 (Biomarker file and Polygenic Scores). The Study of Adolescent Neural Development (SAND) COVID Study began data collection in May 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It included online surveys with the young adult and their primary caregiver.

The FFCWS began its seventh wave of data collection in October 2020, around the focal child's 22nd birthday. Data collection and interviews continued through January 2024. The Year 22 wave included a young adult (YA) survey with the original focal child and a primary caregiver (PCG) survey. Data were also collected on the children of the original focal child (referred to as Generation 3, or G3).

In 2017, the FFCWS team announced the Fragile Families (FF) Challenge, a collaborative effort in which participants were tasked with using machine learning methods and FFCWS data (Baseline to Year 9) to build a model that would predict six key outcomes at Year 15. Materials used in the FF Challenge have been archived in this collection.

In addition to its academic objectives, GMS also has the goal of creating future leaders in minority groups. The program is administered by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Awardees can receive the scholarship for up to 5 years as an undergraduate and 4 years as a graduate student. The scholarship is renewable through graduate school in math, science, engineering, library science, and education.

In order to see how GMS has impacted students and to know how to better prepare minority students for college, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has commissioned a survey of recipients. Cohorts are composed of both recipients and non-recipients. Non-recipients are defined as individuals who were asked to go on to the scholar confirmation/verification phase, but did not become a scholar for one or more reasons.

For the first year of the program, GMS awarded 4,053 scholarships to freshman, continuing undergraduate students, and graduate students. Baseline, first follow-up, second follow-up, and longitudinal survey data have been collected from both recipients and non-recipients. Freshmen constitute one respondent type and continuing undergraduate and graduate students comprise a second respondent type.

The survey covers items viewed by the NORC staff and an advisory panel of sociologists as "mainstream" interests of modern academic sociology. In addition to standard personal data items, the 1975 survey covers such areas of interest as race relations, the family, social control, leisure activities, education, morals, violence, and pornography. The data were collected by the National Opinion Research Center as the fourth in a five-year series of general social surveys. The survey was administered in March and April of 1975 to a national cross-section sample of adults 18 years of age and older. The data were obtained from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.

Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles (IIMMLA), 2004 (ICPSR 22627)

IIMMLA was supported by the Russell Sage Foundation. Since 1991, the Russell Sage Foundation has funded a program of research aimed at assessing how well the young adult offspring of recent immigrants are faring as they move through American schools and into the labor market. Two previous major studies have begun to tell us about the paths to incorporation of the children of contemporary immigrants: The Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS), and the Immigrant Second Generation in New York study. The Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles study is the third major initiative analyzing the progress of the new second generation in the United States. The Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles (IIMMLA) study focused on young adult children of immigrants (1.5- and second-generation) in greater Los Angeles. IIMMLA investigated mobility among young adult (ages 20-39) children of immigrants in metropolitan Los Angeles and, in the case of the Mexican-origin population there, among young adult members of the third- or later generations. The five-county Los Angeles metropolitan area (Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties) contains the largest concentrations of Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, and other nationalities in the United States. The diverse migration histories and modes of incorporation of these groups made the Los Angeles metropolitan area a strategic choice for a comparison study of the pathways of immigrant incorporation and mobility from one generation to the next. The IIMMLA study compared six foreign-born (1.5-generation) and foreign-parentage (second-generation) groups (Mexicans, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese, and Central Americans from Guatemala and El Salvador) with three native-born and native-parentage comparison groups (third- or later-generation Mexican Americans, and non-Hispanic Whites and Blacks). The targeted groups represent both the diversity of modes of incorporation in the United States and the range of occupational backgrounds and immigration status among contemporary immigrants (from professionals and entrepreneurs to laborers, refugees, and unauthorized migrants). The surveys provide basic demographic information as well as extensive data about socio-cultural orientation and mobility (e.g., language use, ethnic identity, religion, remittances, intermarriage, experiences of discrimination), economic mobility (e.g., parents' background, respondents' education, first and current job, wealth and income, encounters with the law), geographic mobility (childhood and present neighborhood of residence), and civic engagement and politics (political attitudes, voting behavior, as well as naturalization and transnational ties).

This website contains information as well as data and documentation files relating to the historical censuses of the United States that make up the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) disseminated through the Minnesota Population Center at the University of Minnesota. Drawn from original census enumeration forms, the data collections in this series include samples of the American population taken from the censuses of 1850 to 1990 (excluding 1890 and 1930). Data files comprise both individual and household records and include information on a broad range of population characteristics, including fertility, nuptiality, life-course transitions, immigration, internal migration, labor-force participation, occupational structure, education, ethnicity, and household composition. Also available is IPUMS-International, a preliminary database describing 48 million persons in six countries: Colombia, France, Kenya, Mexico, United States, and Vietnam. Information about the IPUMS-International samples and variables, and other supporting documentation, are available on the IPUMS website, but researchers must apply for access to the data.

Jewish School Study, 2001 [United States] (ICPSR 4550)

The Jewish School Study was undertaken to determine the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of Jewish education, how Jewish day schools are formed and organized, how Jewish schools contribute to the maintenance of continuity of a 400-year tradition, how adolescent Jews develop their identity, and what role religious education plays in this development. Questions also asked how Jewish adolescents and their parents participate in Jewish life, express their feelings about being Jewish, the role of spirituality in their lives, how they learn about Jewish life, and their relationship/ties with Israel and the Jewish people. Part 1, the Parent Survey, asked parents of students in Jewish schools about the financial costs of religious education, their religious background, Jewish religious practices of their household, as well as their own religious beliefs and spirituality. The survey also sought answers to questions on the parents' reasons for their choice of Jewish school, how involved and in what ways they were involved in their child's school and education, their involvement in the Jewish community, their level of knowledge on various subjects related to Judaism, and their opinions on their own parenting. Other information collected included marital status, income, family status, family origins, education, and employment. Part 2, the Student Survey, asked students about their religious background, the religious practices and experiences in their household, and their own Jewish practices. Students were then asked about how they spent their free time on Saturdays and weekdays, how they and their parents felt about being Jewish, and what types of rules their parents had for them. Additionally, students were queried about their values, friends, and future plans; knowledge of various subjects relating to Judaism; and their opinions of their school, teachers, and their own academic performance. Background information collected included gender, grade in school, name and types of schools attended, household composition, language spoken in the home, and parents' education and employment. Part 3, the Teacher Survey, asked teachers about the settings they worked in and the salary and benefits of those positions. Respondents also were asked about the classes they taught, the use of various teaching methods and media, and their roles and responsibilities. The survey also asked the teachers about their training and professional development, their perceptions and attitudes about their school, parental involvement, resources and facilities, and school goals. Additionally, teachers were asked about their religious background, Jewish religious practices of their own households, and their personal religious beliefs and spirituality. The Kinder Houston Area Survey is a longitudinal study that began in May 1982 after Houston, Texas, recovered from the recession of the mid-1980s. The overall purpose of this research was to measure systematically the public responses to the new economic, educational, and environmental challenges, and to make the findings of this continuing project readily available to civic and business leaders, to the general public, and to research scholars. Part 1, All Responses from 25 Successive Samples, contains all the responses from the successive representative samples of Harris County residents from 1982 through 2014. These are the data that enabled the project to analyze continuity and change among area residents over the course of 26 years. In 13 of the 14 surveys (the years from 1994 through 2014, the one exception being 1996), the surveys were expanded with oversample interviews in Houston's ethnic communities. Using identical random-selection procedures, and terminating after the first few questions if the respondent was not of the ethnic background required, additional interviews were conducted in each of the years to enlarge and equalize the samples of Anglo, African American, and Hispanic respondents at about 500 each. In 1995 and 2002, the research also included large representative samples (N=500) from Houston's Asian communities, with one-fourth of the interviews conducted in Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Korean -- the only such surveys in the country. These additional interviews are included in Part 2, Additional Oversample Interviews.

The data contained in Part 2 are for Restricted-Use of Part 1, All Responses from 25 Successive Samples.

The data contained in Part 3 are based on a 14-year total of 6,576 Anglos, 6,086 African Americans, 6,094 Hispanics, and 1,250 Asians, along with 387 others, and are of particular value in assessing the similarities and differences both within and among Houston's (and America's) four largest ethnic groups. Beginning in 2003, the data files have incorporated detailed information from the 2000 Census on the characteristics of the respondent's neighborhood, not only at the level of home ZIP code, but also by Census tract and block group.

In Part 4, Restricted-Use information from 2000 Census, the data record the population and geographical area of each of the three sectors, distributions by ethnicity and immigrant status, age and gender composition, employment and commuting patterns, and levels of education and income. With this information incorporated in the datasets covering five years of expanded surveys, researchers are able to connect the respondents' perceptions and experiences with information on the neighborhoods in which they live, thereby adding a contextual dimension to analyses of the factors that account for individual differences in attitudes and beliefs. Conducted during February and March of each year, the interviews measured perspectives on the local and national economy, on poverty programs, inter-ethnic relationships. Also captured were respondents' beliefs about discrimination and affirmative action, education, crime, health care, taxation, and community service, as well as their assessments of downtown development, mobility and transit, land-use controls and environmental concerns, and their attitudes toward abortion, homosexuality, and other aspects of the social agenda. Also recorded were religious and political orientations, as well as an array of demographic and immigration characteristics, socioeconomic indicators, and family structures.

The Latino National Survey (LNS) contains 8,634 completed interviews (unweighted) of self-identified Latino/Hispanic residents of the United States. Interviewing began on November 17, 2005, and continued through August 4, 2006. The survey instrument contained approximately 165 distinct items ranging from demographic descriptions to political attitudes and policy preferences, as well as a variety of social indicators and experiences. All interviewers were bilingual, English and Spanish. Respondents were greeted in both languages and were immediately offered the opportunity to interview in either language. Interviewers also provided a consent script that allowed respondents to opt out of the survey. Demographic variables include age, ancestry, birthplace, education level, ethnicity, marital status, military service, number of people in the household, number of children under the age of 18 living in the household, political party affiliation, political ideology, religiosity, religious preference, race, and sex.

The focus groups conducted by the research team for the project presented here offer precisely this convergence of both breadth and depth. The team used a common protocol to guide discussion in fifteen focus groups -- with more than 150 participants in nine cities across eight states -- that were designed to include Spanish and English-speaking respondents, in different regions of the country, with differing compositions by generation and country of origin. The number and range of the participants in these Latino focus groups are unique in the social science literature. This study presents the results of a unique data set, the results of fifteen focus groups conducted across the United States with Latino residents, including foreign-born -- both legal and undocumented immigrants and native-born. These data provide more range than allowed by the typical interview-based project and not only give key insights into Latino residents' thoughts about community, language, discrimination, ties to their countries of origin, and the like, but also provide some sense of participants' explanations of their reasoning and motivations, something not achievable through structured survey data alone.

The Latino National Survey (LNS)--New England is the New England extension of the LATINO NATIONAL SURVEY (LNS), 2006 (ICPSR 20862), which was conducted in 2005-2006. The Michigan Student Study was designed to examine the factors that influence students' intellectual responses to issues of racial and ethnic diversity. The focus was not only on the attitudes and experiences of students of color (Asian American, Latino/Hispanic, African American and Native American students) but on the contribution of diversity to the broader intellectual experiences of White students as well. The longitudinal design of the Michigan Study allowed for consideration of what students bring to the university at entrance, as well as documenting important changes as they move toward graduation. One set of questions addressed the general undergraduate experience of students at the University of Michigan, the positive and negative aspects of their experiences with faculty, interactions with fellow students, extracurricular involvements, reactions to their academic and intellectual experiences, and how similar or different the experiences of students of different racial/ethnic backgrounds were. Another set of questions dealt with the racial "climate" on campus, the degree of racial tension, the students' perceptions of and responses to the University's commitment to multiculturalism and diversity, the perceptions and views that students brought to the campus and how much they were affected and changed by their experiences at the University of Michigan, the positive aspects and specific arenas of concern for the various groups of students around multiculturalism, and the relevancy of the University's commitment to multiculturalism and diversity.

National Household Education Survey, 1991: Revised Version (ICPSR 2762)

This data collection is a revised version of the NATIONAL HOUSEHOLD EDUCATION SURVEY, 1991 (ICPSR 9877). Like the original survey, this data collection consists of two main components: the Early Childhood Education Survey (children 3 to 8 years old) (Part 1, Preprimary Data, and Part 2, Primary Data) and the Adult Education Survey (persons 16 and older) (Part 3, Adult Data, and Part 4, Course Data). In the Early Childhood Education (ECE) component, 13,892 parents/guardians of 3- to 8-year-olds completed interviews about their children's early educational experiences. Included in this component were questions on participation in nonparental care/education, characteristics of programs and care arrangements, and early school experiences, including delayed kindergarten entry and retention in grade. In addition to questions about care/education arrangements and school, parents were asked about activities children engaged in with parents and other family members inside and outside the home. Information on family, household, and child characteristics was also collected. In the Adult Education (AE) component, 9,774 persons 16 years of age and older, identified as having participated in an adult education activity in the previous 12 months, were questioned about their activities. Information was collected on up to four courses and included the subject matter of the course, duration, sponsorship, purpose, and cost. A smaller sample of nonparticipants (n = 2,794) also completed interviews about barriers to participation. Information on the household and the adult's background and current employment was also elicited. In addition to the ECE and AE components, two merge files (Parts 5 and 6), containing the course code variables for each reported course, are supplied for use with the Adult and Course data files.

The National Household Education Survey (NHES) series reports information on the condition of education in the United States by collecting data at the household level rather than using a traditional school-based data collection system. The surveys attempt to address many current issues in education, such as preprimary education, school safety and discipline, adult education, and activities related to citizenship. This survey includes two topical survey components: the Adult Education (AE) component, which collected information about adults' participation in adult education, and the Early Childhood Program Participation (ECPP) component, which focused on children's participation in nonparental childcare and early childhood programs. The AE component explored the participation of adults (aged 16 years and older) in a wide range of educational activities during the 12 months prior to the interview. Respondents were asked about their participation in seven broadly-defined types of adult education activities: adult basic skills and GED preparation classes, English As a Second Language instruction, courses taken toward college degrees or vocational diplomas or certificates, apprenticeship programs, career or job-related courses, any other formally structured courses, and computer-only or video-only instruction on the job. The AE component also collected data pertaining to reasons for and barriers to participation in adult education. In all, 19,722 adult interviews were completed: 11,713 with adult education participants and 8,009 with nonparticipants. The ECPP component examined children's early experiences in various types of nonparental childcare arrangements and early childhood programs. The core of this survey collected extensive information on children's participation and experiences in four types of nonparental care and programs: care by relatives (not including parents), care by nonrelatives, Head Start programs, and other center-based programs. Other information collected in this component concerned children's kindergarten and primary school experiences, children's personal and household demographic characteristics, parent/guardian characteristics, literacy-related home activities, and children's health and disability status. In total, interviews were completed for 14,064 children who were newborn through age 10 and in 3rd grade and below. This includes interviews for 4,135 infants and toddlers, 3,431 preschool children, 1,680 kindergarten children, 4,717 primary school children, and 101 home-schooled children.

The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 (NLSY79) is a longitudinal project that follows the lives of a sample of American youth born between 1957-64. The cohort originally included 12,686 respondents ages 14-22 when first interviewed in 1979; after two subsamples were dropped, 9,964 respondents remain in the eligible samples. The primary purpose of the National Neighborhood Crime Study (NNCS) was to assemble tract-level crime and sociodemographic data for cities across the United States in order to permit analyses of the sources of crime for "communities" of different racial-ethnic and class composition. The NNCS also sought to examine the extent to which the causes of crime in communities are contingent on the types of geographic region, labor market, or other contextual characteristics. To fulfill these purposes, the NNCS compiled crime and sociodemographic data for census tracts in a representative sample of large United States cities for 2000. The dataset includes: (1) tract-level crime data pertaining to seven of the FBI's crime index offenses; (2) tract-level information on social disorganization, structural disadvantage, socioeconomic inequality, mortgage lending, and other control variables garnered from the 2000 United States Census of Population and Housing Summary File 3 (SF3) and other publicly available sources; (3) city-level information for the city in which the tract is located, focused on labor market structure, socioeconomic inequality, population change, and other control variables; and (4) metropolitan area data for the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) or Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA) in which the tract is located, focused on labor market structure, socioeconomic inequality, population change, and other control variables (also taken from the 2000 Census and other publicly available sources). The primary purpose of the second wave of the National Neighborhood Crime Study (NNCS2) was to develop a panel dataset of serious reported crimes in urban neighborhoods circa two time points - 2000 and 2010. These data offer the opportunity to assess the sources and consequences of neighborhood crime change for "communities" of different ethno-racial and economic compositions across the United States. The study also sought to examine the role of a neighborhood's broader ecology on crime levels and crime change by integrating indicators of city and/or metropolitan conditions. The NNCS2 includes two datasets. The first dataset, the NNCS2-Panel file (NNCS2-P), contains information on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Part 1 Index crimes (except arson), socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, and a variety of other neighborhood and city level controls for circa 2000 and 2010 for tracts in 81 of the 91 cities in the NNCS, wave 1. The second dataset, the NNCS2-Cross-Sectional file (NNCS2-CS), allows for examination of the local and contextual sources of neighborhood crime inequality circa 2010. The NNCS2-CS incorporates parallel data for census tracts and cities as in the Panel file, but includes a few additional cities for which panel data could not be compiled, as well information on the metropolitan areas within which cities are located.
