The objective of the Survey of Jails in Indian Country is to gather data on all adult and juvenile jail facilities and detention centers in Indian country, which is defined for purposes of this collection as reservations, pueblos, rancherias, and other Native American and Alaska Native communities throughout the United States. The survey, a complete enumeration of all 69 confinement facilities operated by tribal authorities or by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), provides data on number of inmates, staffing, and facility characteristics and needs. Variables describe each facility, including who operated it, facility age, facility function, rated capacity, authority to house juveniles, number of juveniles held, number of admission and discharges in last 30 days, number of inmate deaths, peak population during June, number of inmates held by sex and conviction status on June 30, number of facility staff by sex and function, facility crowding, renovation and building plans, types of programs available to inmates, and overview of facility and staffing needs.

The study compiles data on the law enforcement, courts and administration, corrections and intermediate sanctions, criminal history records, and justice statistics of the federally recognized American Indian tribal governing bodies. The data determine which tribes have sworn law enforcement personnel and the source of authority, what the number and type of tribal court systems are, who performs the tribal detention function and what types of sanctions are imposed. It also looks at whether tribes have access to state and national criminal record systems.

The Survey of Criminal Justice Experience (SCJE) is a household survey of the criminal justice experiences of United States adults ages 18-64. Measures capture supervision (e.g. probation, jail, and prison) and broader experiences such as arrests and convictions. Researchers are able to estimate 12-month and life-time prevalence rates of respondents' criminal justice experiences. Data were collected between May 8, 2013 and May 20, 2013 via a web-based survey conducted by GfK, a leading market research organization. GfK maintains the KnowledgePanel -- a probability-based research panel representative of households in the United States. A random sample of 5,278 individuals aged 18-64 were selected from the KnowledgePanel and 3,260 participated in the survey. Along with the main survey variables, standard demographic variables, a series of data processing variables created by GfK, and a final sample weight are also included in the dataset. Demographic variables cover: age, race, sex, income, regions, education, marital status, employment status, and housing type.
