This data collection is comprised of responses from two sets of survey questionnaires, the basic Current Population Survey (CPS) and a survey on the topic of Internet and Computer Use in the United States, which was administered as a supplement to the August 2000 CPS.

The CPS, administered monthly, is a labor force survey providing current estimates of the economic status and activities of the population of the United States, for the week prior to the survey. Specifically, the CPS provides estimates of total employment (both farm and nonfarm), nonfarm self- employed persons, domestics, and unpaid helpers in nonfarm family enterprises, wage and salaried employees, and estimates of total unemployment.

The August 2000 supplement survey queried respondents on whether there was a personal computer and/or laptop in the household, how many computers or laptops were in the household, if anyone in the household used the Internet, who was the Internet service provider, how the Internet was accessed (i.e., dial-up, DSL, or cable modem), and where the Internet was regularly accessed (e.g, from home, work, community center, library, or religious facility). Other Internet specific questions included concerns about providing personal information over the Internet, if household members used the Internet to access e-mail, news, weather, play games, take on-line courses, shop, pay bills, look for a job, or search for information about products and services (like health, government, or financial services).

Demographic variables include age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, veteran status, educational attainment, occupation, and income.

The September 2001 supplement survey queried respondents on whether there was a computer and/or laptop in the household, how many computers or laptops were in the household, if anyone in the household used the Internet, and how the Internet was accessed (i.e., dial-up, DSL, or cable modem). Other Internet specific questions included concerns about providing personal information over the Internet, if household members used the Internet to access e-mail, news, weather, LISTSERVs, play games, take on-line courses, view TV or movies, make telephone calls, or search for information about products and services (like health, government, or financial services). Questions pertaining to computer usage included types of software used by household members (e.g., word processing or desktop publishing, spreadsheet or database, e-mail, or graphic design software) and if the software was used on their home and/or work computer to complete school assignments, manage finances, play games, schedule events, or for other uses.

For this survey, respondents from three counties in the Detroit, Michigan, area were queried about how they received and used information in their daily lives and how they viewed other people, groups, and institutions. Respondents were asked about their activities during the previous 12 months, the work they did, and about some things they or someone in their household may have experienced because of their race, ethnicity, or religion. Respondents were also asked for their opinions about American news coverage, helping children grow up, and what the aims of this country should be for the next ten years. In addition, questions addressed respondents' feelings and thoughts during the past 12 months about world events and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Demographic information includes age, sex, marital status, income, education, national origin, employment status, and household composition.

Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, 1997: [United States] (ICPSR 4205)

This data collection offers information on Americans' participation in the arts, such as ballet, opera, plays, museums, concerts, and literature, during 1997. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, and conducted by Westat Corporation of Rockville, Maryland, this survey is the fourth edition of the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA), with prior SPPA surveys having been conducted in 1982, 1985, and 1992. Respondents were asked about their past-year participation in, and frequency of attending, art performances and events in the following categories: jazz music, classical music, opera, musicals, plays (nonmusical), ballet, other dance, art museums, arts fairs, and historical parks. Participation was tabulated for: (1) live arts events attendance, such as visiting an art museum, (2) participation in arts through broadcast and records media, such as using a personal computer (PC) to listen to/see art, and (3) personal performance or creation of art, such as composing music. Reasons for nonparticipation were also collected. Survey questions also asked about socialization in the arts, as well as about respondents' rates of participation in leisure activities other than the arts. New questions in the 1997 SPPA concerned, for example, respondents' use of a home computer in the creation of and interaction with art. New questions also asked about subscribing to series of performances and about membership at art museums. Due to the considerable differences in survey methodologies, this 1997 survey produced results that are not comparable to the 1982, 1985, 1992, or 2002 SPPA surveys. Background information includes age, sex, race, marital status, language of interview, country of birth, age when first moved to the United States, country of ancestry, education level, education level of parents, income, and general health status.

Youth Development Study, 1988-2020 [St. Paul, Minnesota] (ICPSR 24881)

The Youth Development Study (YDS) was initiated as a school-based study of adolescent children and their parents to examine the consequences of formative experiences in adolescence for mental health, value formation, educational achievement, and multiple facets of behavioral adjustment. Particular attention was directed to the impacts of early work experience. Data were also obtained about parent-child and peer relationships and experiences in school. As the study continued, the focus shifted to adult development and attainment and, most recently, mid-life adjustment and health. This comprehensive longitudinal study now encompasses three generations: the initial cohort studied from adolescence to mid-life (G2), their parents (G1), and their adolescent children (G3). Data from three generations in the same families enable study of intergenerational relationships and differences in the experience of adolescence and transition to adulthood across parent and child cohorts. The YDS covers a wide range of topics of interest to sociologists, social psychologists, developmental psychologists, and life course scholars, including the development and impacts of agentic resources, socioeconomic attainment, processes of inter- and intra-generational mobility, objective and subjective work conditions, family relationships, intergenerational relationships, mental and physical health, and well-being.

In-school administration of paper surveys during the first four years of the study was supplemented by mailed surveys. Subsequent data collection took place entirely by mail, with 19 surveys conducted between 1988 and 2011. A final survey was conducted on-line in 2019. Survey data was obtained from the parents (G1) of this cohort during the first and fourth waves of the study (1988 and 1991). Surveys of the children (G3) began in 2009, continued in 2010 and 2011 (by mail) and in 2019-2020 (online).

The Youth Development Study measures a wide range of formative experiences and both psychological and behavioral variables, using survey methodology.

The G1 surveys obtained information about socioeconomic background as well as attitudes toward teenage employment, the parents' own employment as teenagers, their current work experiences, and educational expectations for their children.

The G2 surveys during the high school years included detailed questions about students' work and volunteer experiences, as well as experiences in their family, school, and peer groups, with an emphasis on the ways that working affected other life domains, mental health, and well-being. Shorter surveys containing many of the same topics were administered to students in 1992, 1993, and 1994, and included questions about current family and living arrangements. In 1995, a full survey was administered covering the wide range of topics included in previous surveys as well as information about career plans and life events that had occurred in the past five years. G2 Waves 9 through 19 (1997-2011) included many of the same questions contained in earlier surveys and additional sections that focused on the respondents' educational experiences, family relationships, sources of living expenses, and health and well-being. The most recent G2 survey (2019), administered on-line, included questions about support of aging parents. The YDS is unique in its coverage of both objective and subjective work experiences from adolescence to mid-life.

The topics covered by the G3 surveys are very similar to the G2 variables described above. Variables in each G2 and G3 wave are included in cross-wave codebooks, available at the Data Archive Codebook website.
