Summary Tape File 420 (STF 420) contains sample data weighted to represent the total population of workers 16 years old and over as well as 100-percent counts of all persons and housing units. Included are five population tables and one housing table for each state and its subareas in hierarchical sequences down to the census tract/block numbering area (BNA) level. For workers 16 years old and over, data for 20 places of work and for those working elsewhere are provided for five race groups: (1) White, (2) Black, (3) American Indian, Eskimo, or Aleut, (4) Asian or Pacific Islander, (5) other race and Hispanic origin by race. In addition, a supplemental file, Part 80, is provided that includes a machine-readable list of the total number of workers living in each county and, for that county, the number of persons working in the 20 destinations listed as well as a "worked elsewhere" category for the remainder of places worked. The list also applies to the sub-county geographic units (census tracts/BNAs) and contains a variety of geographic entities as destinations (the number of destinations may be less than 20).

There are a total of 171 population tables ("P") and 56 housing tables ("H") provided down to the block level, and 59 population tables provided down to the census tract level ("PCT") for a total of 286 tables. In addition, 14 population tables and 4 housing tables at the block level and 4 population tables at the census tract level are repeated by major race and Hispanic or Latino groups. The data present population and housing characteristics for the total population, population totals for an extensive list of race (American Indian and Alaska Native tribes, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander) and Hispanic or Latino groups, and population and housing characteristics for a limited list of race and Hispanic or Latino groups. Summary File 4 (SF 4) from the United States 2000 Census contains the sample data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of a sample of all people and housing units. Population items include basic population totals: urban and rural, households and families, marital status, grandparents as caregivers, language and ability to speak English, ancestry, place of birth, citizenship status, year of entry, migration, place of work, journey to work (commuting), school enrollment and educational attainment, veteran status, disability, employment status, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Housing items include basic housing totals: urban and rural, number of rooms, number of bedrooms, year moved into unit, household size and occupants per room, units in structure, year structure built, heating fuel, telephone service, plumbing and kitchen facilities, vehicles available, value of home, monthly rent, and shelter costs. In Summary File 4, the sample data are presented in 213 population tables (matrices) and 110 housing tables, identified with "PCT" and "HCT" respectively. Each table is iterated for 336 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), 39 Hispanic or Latino groups, and 86 ancestry groups. The presentation of SF4 tables for any of the 336 population groups is subject to a population threshold. The Latino National Survey (LNS) contains 8,634 completed interviews (unweighted) of self-identified Latino/Hispanic residents of the United States. Interviewing began on November 17, 2005, and continued through August 4, 2006. The survey instrument contained approximately 165 distinct items ranging from demographic descriptions to political attitudes and policy preferences, as well as a variety of social indicators and experiences. All interviewers were bilingual, English and Spanish. Respondents were greeted in both languages and were immediately offered the opportunity to interview in either language. Interviewers also provided a consent script that allowed respondents to opt out of the survey. Demographic variables include age, ancestry, birthplace, education level, ethnicity, marital status, military service, number of people in the household, number of children under the age of 18 living in the household, political party affiliation, political ideology, religiosity, religious preference, race, and sex.

This study contains data on the attitudes and opinions of voters toward the political parties and the political process in the United States in 1948. The study was conducted in May 1948, before the political party conventions. Respondents were probed about their feelings toward the Republican, Democratic, and the Wallace Third parties, and taxes. They were also questioned about party identification, party differences, the most important problems facing the government and their own families, the possibility of the United States' involvement in another war in the next five years, the 1944 vote, and their voting intentions. In addition, respondents were asked to evaluate Truman's general performance as president, and to respond to questions gauging their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with Truman's policy toward Russia, labor unions, minority groups, and Palestine. Their opinions were also sought about who to blame for the high cost of living and the trouble between labor and management. Demographic items specify age, sex, race, nationality, education, occupation, religion, political party affiliation, labor union membership, ideological orientation, and veteran status.

This study contains economic and demographic data tabulations on persons in households in the United States in 1970. These data record selected Fifth Count population and housing characteristics for all of the 38,529 governmental units eligible for the Revenue Sharing Program in Entitlement Period #1. In addition, the file also contains information on the funds returned to the local governments. Data are provided on aggregate income, distribution of the population by race, age, and sex, relationship, school enrollment, and employment. Data are also provided on housing units and distribution of households by family type, family income, poverty status, and gross rent. This survey investigated health insurance coverage, as well as access to and use of health services, in each of ten states. With the goal of remedying the previous lack of state-level data, the survey was conducted to aid in defining problems of insurance coverage and to analyze the impacts of states' policy options. The main unit of observation is the health insurance family, which includes the head, spouse, and their children up to age 18, or to age 23 if they were in school. Variables on health insurance coverage include the types of coverage respondents carried (Medicare, Medicaid, additional state or federal programs, and private policies), sources of private policy coverage, premiums paid for private policies, and number of months uninsured during the last year. Access to health care is measured by variables such as the type of usual health care provider, the amount of time it usually took to get to the doctor's office, and whether needed medical care was not received during the previous year. Variables on the utilization of health care include the number of overnight hospital stays, the number of visits to doctors, age at first DPT (diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus) shot, age at first oral polio immunization, and the number of months since the most recent breast exam and Pap smear. The survey also elicited self-reported health status and opinions on the health care system, gauged satisfaction/dissatisfaction with health services received, and gathered information on employment, income, education, migration, age, sex, marital status, race, Hispanic origin, and citizenship.

This file provides totals for detailed Hispanic groups from Census 2000 and from the results of a simulation analysis. The simulated totals presented are illustrative and do not replace the official Census 2000 totals for these groups. The totals from Census 2000 are based on sample estimates from the Spanish/Hispanic/Latino question on the long form and are the official figures. The simulated totals provided do not fully reflect self-identification. Instead, they include (1) the responses of those who self-identified into a specific group and (2) the responses of those who reported a general term and were tabulated into a specific group using responses to the place of birth or ancestry questions.

This data collection contains information gathered in the Survey of Income and Education (SIE) conducted in April-July 1976 by the Census Bureau for the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). Although national estimates of the number of children in poverty were available each year from the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey (CPS), those estimates were not statistically reliable on a state-by-state basis. In enacting the Educational Amendments of 1974, Congress mandated that HEW conduct a survey to obtain reliable state-by-state data on the numbers of school-age children in local areas with family incomes below the federal poverty level. This was the statistic that determined the amount of grant a local educational agency was entitled to under Title 1, Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. (Such funds were distributed by HEW's Office of Education.) The SIE was the survey created to fulfill that mandate. Its questions include those used in the Current Population Survey regarding current employment, past work experience, and income. Additional questions covering school enrollment, disability, health insurance, bilingualism, food stamp recipiency, assets, and housing costs enabled the study of the poverty concept and of program effectiveness in reaching target groups. Basic household information also was recorded, including tenure of unit (a determination of whether the occupants of the living quarters owned, rented, or occupied the unit without rent), type of unit, household language, and for each member of the household: age, sex, race, ethnicity, marital history, and education.

The collection was provided to ICPSR by the National Chicano Research Network which was located at the Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan.

This data collection is a modified version of the original SURVEY OF INCOME AND EDUCATION, 1976 (ICPSR 7634). While the original files were hierarchically structured, this file is rectangular in structure. All of the household and person records were included in the rectangular file, but none of the family records. The household variables were placed at the beginning of each corresponding person record. The survey was conducted during the months of April through July of 1976 by the Census Bureau for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. It served as a supplement to the yearly Current Population Survey and was conducted to obtain reliable state-by-state data on the numbers of children in local areas with family incomes below the federal poverty level. These instructional materials were prepared for use with UNION ARMY RECRUITS IN BLACK REGIMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES, 1862-1865 (ICPSR 9426), compiled by Jacob Metzer and Robert A. Margo. The data file and accompanying documentation are provided to assist educators in instructing students about the demographic, military, and medical history of African-American men who volunteered for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. An instructor's handout has also been included. This handout contains the following sections, among others: (1) General goals for student analysis of quantitative datasets, (2) Specific goals in studying this dataset, (3) Suggested appropriate courses for use of the dataset, (4) Tips for using the dataset, and (5) Related secondary source readings. This data collection was designed to examine the characteristics of free Blacks and ex-slaves mustered into the Union Army between 1862 and the end of the Civil War. In addition to variables on personal characteristics (such as skin, eye, and hair color, height, age, birthplace, and occupation before enlistment), the data also contain Army-related variables (such as regiment and company number, rank, enlistment date and place, changes in rank, and date and cause of end of service).
