ANES 1952 Time Series Study (ICPSR 7213)

This study is part of a time-series collection of national surveys fielded continuously since 1948. The election studies are designed to present data on Americans' social backgrounds, enduring political predispositions, social and political values, perceptions and evaluations of groups and candidates, opinions on questions of public policy, and participation in political life. The 1952 National Election Study gauges political attitudes in general, along with attitudes and behaviors directly relevant to the 1952 presidential election. The interview schedule contained both closed and open-ended questions designed to collect data on a wide range of issues. Most respondents were interviewed both before and after the date of the election. The pre-election survey tapped attitudes toward political parties, candidates, and other specific issues, and inquired about the respondents' personal and political background. The post-election interview focused on the actual vote and voting-related behaviors. Additionally, a sub-sample of 585 respondents was administered a Form B re-interview obtaining further information about organizational affiliations, personal data, and non-political opinions and attitudes. A special emphasis was placed on the perception of group behavior, especially the perceived political preferences of family, friends, and associates.

Michigan Student Study: Opinions, Expectations, and Experiences of Undergraduate Students, 1990-1994 (ICPSR 4027)

The Michigan Student Study was designed to examine the factors that influence students' intellectual responses to issues of racial and ethnic diversity. The focus was not only on the attitudes and experiences of students of color (Asian American, Latino/Hispanic, African American and Native American students) but on the contribution of diversity to the broader intellectual experiences of White students as well. The longitudinal design of the Michigan Study allowed for consideration of what students bring to the university at entrance, as well as documenting important changes as they move toward graduation. One set of questions addressed the general undergraduate experience of students at the University of Michigan, the positive and negative aspects of their experiences with faculty, interactions with fellow students, extracurricular involvements, reactions to their academic and intellectual experiences, and how similar or different the experiences of students of different racial/ethnic backgrounds were. Another set of questions dealt with the racial "climate" on campus, the degree of racial tension, the students' perceptions of and responses to the University's commitment to multiculturalism and diversity, the perceptions and views that students brought to the campus and how much they were affected and changed by their experiences at the University of Michigan, the positive aspects and specific arenas of concern for the various groups of students around multiculturalism, and the relevancy of the University's commitment to multiculturalism and diversity.

The purpose of this data collection is to provide an appropriate theoretical and empirical approach to concepts, measures, and methods in the study of Black Americans. The questionnaire was developed over two years, with input from social scientists, students, and a national advisory panel of Black scholars. The final instrument encompasses several broad areas related to Black American life. The study explores neighborhood-community integration, services, crime and community contact, the role of religion and the church, physical and mental health, and self-esteem. It also examines employment, the effects of chronic unemployment, the effects of race on the job, and interaction with family and friends. In addition, the survey provides information on racial attitudes, race identity, group stereotypes, and race ideology. Demographic variables include education, income, occupation, and political behavior and affiliation.
